Pretty sure this will bring you to a 64-bit version of suse linux. ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/suse/x86_64/9.1/suse/src/ Dunno if this is still something needed or not. |

One corporate meeting down. (forced labor for 7am to 2:30 am) My body is withstanding the burden, but yet another week long ordeal awaits. Will I survive? (yes.) No one has a laptop that I could utilize? Oh well... yes, justin, the 29th is fine. Why don't we just have a Lan event from the 29th, TO the 5th? I will take the week off... ;) The games are good. Let's have some fun! Whisky_Drunk |

there was a spark of hope, that maybe Half Life 2 might be out before the June LAN party...but now Doug Lombardi / Valve has said that a 2005 release is likely. Quite rediculous, really, since the game was supposedly ready for a 9/30/03 release up until the source leak. The webmaster for www.planethalflife.com has since resigned. I found his rant amusing. www.forumplanet.com/planethalflife/topic.asp?fid=6549&tid=1352802 Thank the Maker for Unreal. |

I tend to look forward to moving. The way i see it, I'm young and I have few chains these days. There are so many cool places to live in Milwaukee, living in the same place for more than a year seems like a waste. I have secured 3 days for A-Cen, and I'm working on Thursday night. That way, we could rendezvous at Ze Compound late that night, instead of at the convention itself friday morning. Also eliminates the need for costly redundant parking. CrowScape, thoughts? Also...is it settled, then? June 5th for the next LAN? |

| Moving? Cool. I just advice not immitateing me and moving once every year as I seem to have been succesfully doing for the last 8 (Years I didn't move have been negated by my moving twice in a year. Like last!). And with my impending college graduation it looks like the tradition will continue. w00t! | |

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/MelvinGoestoDinner-1127589/ OMG! Justin, they made your Fazolies/Sam's Club after-work-talks into a movie! And not too bad of one either. I was expecting more comedy from Bob Odenkirk but it was still most enjoyable. Direction was killer and the cinematography was appropraite. It's like you're at the next table tring to listen in on what these people are saying. Nifty watch if you have time. |

It's out. I'm so happy, I could weep. For joy! http://www.beyondunreal.com/daedalus/singlepost.php?id=5441 We're getting Rabbit, now Fraghouse Invasion is back... UT2004 is teh greatest evah! so...what did we decide for that LAN party? June 5th? Let's commit, shall we? Oh, and Intrigue and I are really close to deciding on our next apartment, and the leading candidate right now offers several vast improvements for LAN party accomodations, such as more parking and a huge 2-story party room. The future of SpooLAN looks bright indeed! Let us mobilize! |

just in case there are any gamers here who haven't heard yet, the NV40 apparently "rocks" the "house". http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040414/index.html for the media folk, there's an extra little bonus where this card is supposed to (finally) take over 2D video encoding/decoding tasks from the CPU. Of course, software support is a little behind, but apparently not too far (Adobe has already annouced support plans). If they get this working, the last advantage of the Pentium 4 architecture will finally crumble. I hope the NLE builders are paying attention. |

I'm just working on a project for Studio III. It's a 12 page "trailer" for my next movie (Cause he wanted us to tell a story and this seemed like the PERFECT excuse for me to get off my arse and write the script.), tentitively titled Working Man, a la the Rush song. I'll have to try the code later. I have an arthistoryforsucks paper I gotta SOMEHOW stretch to 4 pages. Man, I've been in college mostly on for the last 8 years, so one would think that would be easy what with the mad BS'in skillz I've aquired. Yeah, in theory that's true. But ya'll know the difference between theroy and practice. OH! It has become abundantly clear that The Big Lebowski bowling isn't going to happen in Graphics. BUT 1 level of a office space 2k3 shooter a'la Star Fox should. The eneimes will attack in sin and maybe cos waves alone! I suppose I could rotate them though along the Z axis. Dunno. We'll have to see how much time I have to make it l33t. |

Last time! I promise! I made it WAY too complicated... well... too complicated if you don't really care about text browsers anyway. Here's all you need: .img {text-align:center;} .img img {margin:0 auto;} Then you can simply do the following in html: (div class="img")(img /)(/div) or (p class="img")(img /)(/p) Let me know if this works for you Mathew. |
|

Alright, taking from where I left off, this WILL validate... and this time I'll be using () instead of the traditional brackets for the html. Again, this works in IE 6.0, Firefox, and Opera. This example is for a centered image with a hyperlink that is nice to text-only browsers- Here's the CSS: #imgName{ list-style-type:none; margin:0px; text-align:center; padding:0px; } #imgName li{ background:url("image") no-repeat; height:imageheightpx; margin:0 auto; width:imagewidthpx; } #imgName span{display:none;} #imgName a{ display:block; cursor:pointer; height:imageheightpx; width:imagewidthpx; } Here's the "HTML": (ul id="imgName") (li) (a href="http://www.amazon.com")(span)Alternate Text Here(/span)(/a) (/li) (/ul) This might be adapted for use with heading tags encolsed in divs: (div)(h1)(span)(/span)(/h1)(/div). Whatever, it seems three elements are necessary for full compatibility. |

| Aw... my html code was disappeared... I shoulda known... | |

Ah, screw it, I'll just give you some code that should work. Redirecting IE browsers to firefox is not a good idea considering 80% of everyone is using IE. Like it or not, your page has to play nice with IE unless you're one of those "experimental" pages. This solution is not "elegant", but it works in IE 6.0, Firefox, and Opera. I don't have a Mac so you'll have to test it on IE 5.0. CSS code: #imgName{ background:url("yourpathhere.imageextension") no-repeat; height:imageheighthereinpx; width:imagewidthhereinpx; } HTML implementation: Now, if you want to have your centered image link to something; The problem now is that on a mouse over the user will not have the pointer change to clue him in to the link, so you have to adjust your CSS code to the following: #imgName{ background:url("yourpathhere.imageextension") no-repeat; cursor:pointer; height:imageheighthereinpx; width:imagewidthhereinpx; } But now, unfortunately, we don't have any alternate text, I'm also not sure if this will validate as there is nothing in the span (you could probably add a space). You could try this with , having the text-align set to the ul, the li displaying the image, and then the span holding the alternate text with the style="display:none." I don't see why that wouldn't work, but who knows. |

It's good to be back Crow. I will, unfortuantely, not be making it to ACEN as I think I hinted at earlier. Severely low money levels mean I'm not leaving GB for a while. But with luck by the end of May I'll at least have some shit job cause I HIGHLY doubt I'll be finding a carrear one right away. But maybe once I'm actually a graduatate propsective employers will do more than give me an auto-resoponse when I submit my resume. At least at the moment I'm so swamped with schoolwork I can't care about anything but school. Sleep would be good though. As would the afformentioned fun with an f. As for CSS and IE on a Mac, chances are it's not you. I had to write javascript functions, which I called IEForSucks naturally, to get my content to display right in IE there. As I learned getting TEXT to display in the middle of an xhtml page in IE is easy with text-align. Now doing that to an image with IE 5, that's hard. At this point I'm thinking of all future pages I maintain I should write a script to detect IE and if it returns true I'll redirect them to firefox. Gotta run. Must get some grease pizza with my parents's money from Rocky's then take Jazz History exam. Oh and thank you again Justin for Red Dwarf. :) I did screen it in the Computer Science lab here and I forgot how funny Backwards was. I think I laughed hardest at that one. |

I have to say it's nice to see you back here Dream BBQ Child. I too have been having problems with IE on the Mac, although it involved the quality of my CSS code. I do want to talk about the whole jobs issue some more... but I think I'll wait for some downtime at a LAN or maybe ACen to discuss it. |

Yikes! the 1337 levels are getting dangerously high around here... Regarding Intrigue's comments about Welfare vs. Education, I recently taped a forum with Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton regarding the status of women, and what the government's role should be (specifically how to help poor single mothers). A very interesting discussion started around the concept of, for lack of a better term, "Universal Child Care". Basically, instead of throwing free money at welfare moms with no strings attached, how about we take those funds and start a new kind of education reform. Currently, Wisconsin mothers get trapped in "workfare" because the little money they make goes straight into child care, making it impossible to save money and get out of poverty. If the government took care of that instead of writing checks directly to the mothers, perhaps the cycle could be broken. If additional funding is available, then day care could be expanded late into the night, allowing these single mothers to take classes at night without having to worry about their kids, allowing the possibility of better paying jobs in the future. As the kids get older, "day care" morphs into regular school. Eligible mothers would then receive money based on the scholastic performance of their children. This would encourage them to take an active role in their child's education (by at least making sure they show up to class). When the child excels, the parent gets more money for their own education. It teaches responsibility for both, and might even foster the mentality that children are an asset, not a burden. Anything to salvage what little remains of the "American family", and hopefully avoid full prisons and Columbines in the future. I think this makes a lot of sense, so naturally, both Political Parties are fleeing from it in terror, and Lawton isn't making much progress. But I thought it might be worth spreading the word. I'd rather see a big fat deduction in my paycheck for something like this than the impotent shit-programs we're running now. |

| Justin: the presentation of all ancient writing has been "hopelessly twisted" to present certain agendas, yet that doesn't prevent us from using them substantialy to find out what happened way back when. The idea that history has to be an acurate retelling is purely a modern invention. | |

I'm not sure the Bible is a good "historical" record of anything. Sure, certain events are known to be based on real occurences, supported by archaeology and astronomy...but the Bible's presentation of them is hopelessly twisted by men to push a specific agenda (and then, of course, there's the translation dilemma). Part of the appeal of a MMOG seems to be it's unscripted nature; the ability of the players to shape the agenda dynamically... "RRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!" -- Colonel Mfume, "The Matrix Revolutions" Yep, the dock battle still rocks, even on DVD. |

This is a combined thought, but it took place over several ideas this weekend. 1. Why as a culture dont we spend more on education than on welfare? 2. Why did we develop all of this vr technology and why dont we use it for education? (Mrs. Bosar, JB's Mom) 3. Why are we so willing to spend money on pre developed entertainment? 4. Why is the Matrix a good choice for an online MMOG? 5. If the Passion of Christ was a larger BOX OFFICE hit than the matrix, then does that mean that the Passion of Christ ONLINE might be an interesting place to make a virtual world? For historical reasons, it might be cool to make a Virtual version of the bible that people could walk through? I know that there are different interpritations of all of the events, but hey maybe that is part of it, you can pick and choose how you would like to look at it? |

ok, now it looks like we're pushing back again. Dave is out of the state on 1st, and you just can't have a SpooLAN without Whiskey. So...start looking into the 1st weekend in June, please. Well, gives everyone plenty of time to buy UT2004 at least. I also found out that you don't actually need Unreal 2 installed to run XMP...you only need the CD for the installation check. So that saves a ton of time and space, so I'll be pushing for more of that at the next LAN. Also, word on the street is that Battlefield: Vietnam is mighty, mighty fine. http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20040318/index.html if anyone is thinking up upgrading before then, the new FX-53 seems to be a winner. A pricey winner, but still far cheaper than P4EE. It also appears to be the most overclockable high-end processor available, if you're into that kind of thing. Me, I just like to know that it won't be overheating at it's recommended 2.4 ghz, since they pushed it to 2.6 with no additional cooling. Yippee! At work we got word of 4-6 paying composites headed our way for a feature film [dance of joy]. To assist we're building an Opteron 146 box, so I'll make sure to see how that holds up under UT2004 at some point. Or, we could use it as a server since we're connected via DSL. |

8 May 2004 - - SpooLAN \/ Let's try that instead of the 22nd for the following reasons: - There is an extremely good chance I'll have to attend 1-3 graduation parties the 22nd. - If the above does not occur, I will be paintball shooting with my employers. - Tequila is excellent. - The 22nd is definitely too far in the future. Thoughts? |

Hey all (especialy lucky Jim), I have a request for you all. Could you check out the AV8 forums (that's the event Kruger and I are trying to start up) and post questions and statements about media you are/trying to/want to create? That would be super. I want to start up a dialog, even though there really isn't one going on now.
