I must disagree with the 1337ness award of giving me "everything else". JK deserves 1942 (Johny Courageous can't drive for shit) and most certainly props go out to Big_Whisky in TA for his near-impenitrable defense and excellent showing despite his newbie status. Armagetron might go to Eric, but everyone had several moments in the sun there, so it's definately a great game for all skill levels to compete against each other. Kump won both the WarIII matches, if I recall. You may consider me a serious threat in most games, but I am far from being the master of all (more of a team player, I'd like to think). I don't mind taking one for Tribes though ^_^

Wow. That was a great party all! You know, I should have read/checked/posted to this site BEFORE the gathering... Oh well. We can't have it all. So...when shall we hold the next event? I suggested any time in October. Any dates bad for anyone? How about the 17th-18th-19th? (two months from today) Let me know!!!

Forgive spelling:

Ceasar Salad:

Ingredients:
Small dash of Tobasco Sauce
Whole Anchovies (OPTIONAL)
Two medium sized gloves of fresh garlic
1 tsp Anchovie Paste
Several big splashes of white or red wine vinegar (white wine was used at the LAN)
1 egg, codled (boil for one minute)
Juice of half a lemon (couple caps full of Real Lemon works just as well)
Several dashes of pepper (fresh ground on medium setting best)
Couple dashes of worchestshire sauce
One head Romain Letuce (perhaps two depending on size and quality)
Permissian Cheese (Permigano Regganio for best, but expensive results)
Croutans (Peperage Farm Ceaser works, or make your own, see bottom)

In salad bowl crush garlic and add tobasco, anchovie paste, vinegar, worchestshire lemon, pepper and egg and mix thoughourly. Add lettuce and toss. Add croutans, parmissian cheese and whole anchovies and toss thoughourly. Feeds four as a side salad.

The results will be heavily dependant on the quality of the ingredients. Choose wisely (or you'll age rapidly and Indiana Jones will get away). Perfect through trial and error.

Home made croutans

Bread (Sourdough was used for the LAN)
Olive Oil

Fry bread in olive oil until golden.

I'm bringing down UFO Princess Valkyire, which qualifies more as "Wrong, wrong anime" and not necessarily "Bad".

Posted by: Dream BBQ Child Posted on: Friday August 15 2003 9:56am
I think this means I must know you pretty well dare justin. ;) Somehow I just KNEW you were going to say that.

I am planning on bringing FLCL and Otaku no Video though, not they'll fit in bad, bad anime.

Posted by: justin Posted on: Friday August 15 2003 9:12am
actually, I was just assuming you'd bring some Neon Genesis down. Ouch! ;)

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Thursday August 14 2003 10:15pm
I've got two whole bulbs of garlic that I'm bringing down for my Ceasar. If you don't need too much, you can mooch off my supply. I'm also bringing down a garlic press.

Posted by: Dream BBQ Child Posted on: Thursday August 14 2003 9:52pm
Dude, if you have something that will rival Frankenstein or Call of the Wild for bad, bad anime, we're in trouble. Also if I don't make it down in time for the Pick n' Save run I need bacon and fresh garlic. Not that crap in the jar. I'm talkin' fresh cloves. I should be able to supply the BBQ sauce, provided I can find it.

Buck had never loved another man before.

My mouse and my keyboard are so 1337 that they're capable of kicking my ass if I don't bring them.

$6 of lettuce and $6 of cheese has been procured... thinking of buying another $3 of lettuce. Make sure you have those eggs!

just wanted to remind Crow, DBBQC and AC to BYOM (bring your own mouse), as i make no claim as to the quality or even the quantity of viable mice here for those 3 spare computers. For everyone else, make sure you bring gaming CDs where necessary (WarCraft III, Brood War, and TA for those that have it). Once patched, the UT and Tribes games don't requires CDs, so you can leave those home. If anyone needs my cell phone number, send me an e-mail. I will be at work until around 4:30 tomorrow.

So when does the aforementioned action actually begin happening?

Although I've secured 10:00am Saturday to 2:00am Sunday from the wife & kids, I don't see anything to indicate if my hard-won free time actually matches up with the gaming schedule.

I've found directions, but time estimates seem lacking...

in my experience, to beat rush hour in Chicagoland (on friday) you need to be on the north side no later than 2pm. Why "rush hour" is 4 hours long, i'm not sure, i guess nobody works 9 to 5 anymore (which combines with the typical Illinois resident's complete inability to drive, for nasty results). so, you're not going to beat it without getting here many hours before justin and i leave work, so you might as well wait it out and leave at it starts to thin (when would that be? 6 or so? gets you here around 7:30? sounds reasonable).

So, arrive at around 7:00 PM on Friday? Eww... Rush hour through O'Hare...

Posted by: justin Posted on: Wednesday August 13 2003 1:47pm
i would like to see the source of that one. if true, why only 640k for resident programs in MS-DOS? at some point, somebody at microsoft must have decided that more was either not possible, or not useful, thus the arbitrary limit.

something that always confused me about that...it is an insignificant number in binary. it doesn't even line up with the maximum of any length binary string. The nearest are 512k and 1024k. memory limits are typically imposed by addressing limitations, inherent to the structure of binary numbers. but there shouldn't have ever been an addressing limit at 640k, because to address that, you'd need the same amount of bits as to address 1024k. i wonder if there's a book "naze nani 640k"...

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Wednesday August 13 2003 1:28pm
First, it should be "640K ought to be enough for everybody." Secondly, it should be punctuated as "...640K ought to be enough for everybody." Secondly, it should be quoted completely "I don't think 640K ought to be enough for everybody." Blame the Linux zealots, none of them ever passed a journalistic ethics course.

What does a user of Amazon.com think of Rise of Nations?

1 out of 5 stars
Reviewer: Dave from Alexandria, Virginia United States
This game might be a good one.... If I could play it on my laptop. If your like me and 1 million others that only have an 8MB of memory on a laptop, DON'T get this- it won't work on your computer. I was looking forward to playing this too, don't fall into the same trap I did.

Yes, there is absolutely no reason that a recent game with 3D-accelerated graphics using DirectX 9 and massive maps should need any more than 8MB of memory. What does Microsoft think, that computers built in the past five years can handle at least 256MB of RAM? Or perhaps that people can read system requirements clearly printed on the box (and in the description)? Madness! 1 star!

While not a game suitable for a LAN, it is something you should all check out: http://www.moonpod.com/

Oh, and seriously look into the Jailbreak mod for UT.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Tuesday August 12 2003 8:54pm
NaliCity is missing out on some of the better maps... either that or its organization sucks ass... or a combination of the two. Anyway, I have some suggestions from there:

Aquamarina
Baranco
Denovo
Glacier
Lucius v2

Baranco just has a balance problem with item placement (it's rediculously easy to get the keg 'o health, shield belt, and armor on the blue side, while those items are hidden and require translocation on the red side) but it's still fun.

www.nalicity.com
problem solved, they have most old UT maps archived over there. in fact, i'll probably just start linking over there when i run out of space.

It has been my experiance, save for TA and it informs you of this right on the box, that if the game exists on both the PC and MAC they will play together over TCP/IP.

And now I return home. The bad news is I have to convert my scheduling code to Java thanks to the lack of standards in the C++ enviroment and the move by UWGB from Borland to .NET. The good news I will be so heated thanks to working with Java over these next few days I will be ready to kill (virtually speaking of course)! Also, I will be coming down on Friday due to parking and my Media Play run today. My FLCL collection is now complete and on a whim I picked up Otaku no Video. Anyway, the more food I can mooch of my parents now the better :).

UT Booty isn't a porn site (although www.utbooty.com is), but I don't think UT Booty still has the files available for download.

Posted by: justin Posted on: Tuesday August 12 2003 2:56pm
sigh...how come i can't ever make a double post? i guess i'll have to put more traps in, maybe get those semaphores working. and the UT section is still forthcoming. I will at least put the patch up before then LAN. I would like to get some maps up, but the problem i'm having is figuring out which custom texture files, music, and scripts go with which map, since i've lost the original zips years ago..."UT Booty" became a porn site last i checked...the file names are rarely useful...and there are very few readme files. in the end, i'll probably just make a few big zips of "all custom music", "all custom textures", etc, but first i need to get more webspace instead of sharing with Pulgari Trap. And, since UT will transfer missing files when you join a server, it's not a high priority.

Posted by: rockmanac Posted on: Tuesday August 12 2003 12:51pm
JB,

What's with the 404 errors? I was looking around in the 'games' section trying to see if you had any custom UT maps, etc and all I get is 404 not found :(

Btw.. Is UT2k3/OS-X compatable w/ UT2k3/Win for gaming?

That's impressive performance from a chip that doesn't exist. :D

Should be Opteron 240.

Posted by: justin Posted on: Monday August 11 2003 2:26pm
uh oh what?
for those curious: the Opteron 420 box (a chip available for less than $300 running at 1.4ghz) gets over twice the average FPS in UT2003 of the 1.67ghz Athlon or 2ghz Pentium 4 systems we have running here. And this is &i without &p the proper 64-bit Windows or the 64-bit executable for UT (both should be out in September). And the system is practically silent when closed, even with the GeForceFX 5900. The future is looking good.

About TA units...with 8-11 anticipated human players, we're already filling up most of the maps without using AI players, and since anti-nuke stuff is very useful to humans, the units stay. Also, with the patch available here, I have now played TA on 4 different machines (Kump and I played just yesterday against the AI) and I've never once seen the computer build excessive quantities of those units. So, accept the possibility that the bug you speak of is either fixed or something uniquely screwy with your installation. I've seen many strange things, from agoraphobia to inexplicable radar jamming to suicidal commanders to construction bots that can nanolathe halfway across the map, but never an army of Scarabs coming over the hill.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Sunday August 10 2003 6:13pm
OK, just make sure you guys have eggs available and I'll bring up the shiznit.

Posted by: justin Posted on: Sunday August 10 2003 2:49pm
ah yes...I haven't checked Armagetron for updates in a while. Along those lines, perhaps the Tron 2.0 demo would also be appropriate, as it's the same concept with pretty glowing Lithtech engine. And caesar is good with me and The Other Justin(tm).

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Sunday August 10 2003 1:06am
Justin, I take it you're thinking of running a competitive game of TA? If not, remove the Scarab and the Hedgehog from the unit list, as they only serve to tie up computer units. There is a patch available that doubles the standard 250 unit limit which you may want to try and track down though.

Also, what's a good time to arrive by on Friday, and any reply on my offer to make a big Ceasar?

Many complements on the 3/4th's-assed Perl. The code is hidden from me, but I will assume it is efficient and well-documented (*snigger*).

As for gaming you shall all marvel at Avarice, the mighty P4 with GeForce4 frosting, wrapped in a colorful candy shell. An obscure gaming treat named Armagetron both recalls memories of early 80's sci-fi and lives happily under the free-love GPL license. I submit http://armagetron.sourceforge.net as a possible LAN amusement. I can personally confirm that there is zero learning curve and infinite fun to be had from the concept at this games core.

To gaming!

Justin's new Opteron system breathes...and Dave's new Barton is in the building as well, i'm told. Although the Serial ATA experiment is not going well...that technology seems to be much further from mainstream compatibility than 64-bit. anyway, that means that the Intrigue box will be available for Adam and/or DBBQC, assuming Crow uses Cupcake (sorry, but you got more P4 love than anyone else here).

Posted by: Dream BBQ Child Posted on: Thursday August 7 2003 8:58am
So that was your CAT 5 cable. I will bring er' down.

As the Dream BBQ Child I must insist that if any BBQ Burgers are to be made I am the one who shall be making them. They are after, all along with Bell Peppers and Beef, my speciality.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Thursday August 7 2003 2:49am
BBQ Burgers sound good... what's involved besides BBQ and hamburger meat? Plus the lemon peper shiskamawhoie is appealing as well. If you would like, I can bring up stuff to make my Ceasar salad, I'd just need you guys to have an egg (well, two or three if it's for fourteen people) and a means with which to boil it for a minute. I'd offer my other specialties, but I'm not sure how crab cakes, shrimp scampii or poached salmon would go over (plus it would be expensive and messy). I could make a cheesecake in advance though ^_^

I was also entertaining the idea of LAN party awards. We would of course need an "And Not Just the Men..." award. Best new game I think is out, as a game first introduced to a LAN doesn't get much play, plus there are so few.

Posted by: intrigue Posted on: Thursday August 7 2003 12:51am
one last post before bed, one of my old college friends might stop in, she has not been to a lan party before, I repeat "she", yes it is possible for girls to like games too. Marrie has spend alot of hours playing games like the sims and sim city, she is open to new games and i am looking for you guys to make this a "fun process" and not overwhelming. Marrie graduated with a degree in i think mechanical engineering, and is currently studing to be a vetrenarian, she can be a geek like the rest of us but i make no garuntees that she is still one. It would be nice if other girls would show too, but we will see. Just thought that i would give a heads up.

As jb is quardnating the arival of people, i am looking in to the finner things in life, like food. I am curious how many people are in favor of using the kitchen for grub? With the help of 1 or 2 and the $$ contributions of many, i am willing to make brekfast and maybe some other meals. The more interest that it shown, the more effort that will go into the cookin. JB can back up the claims that I can make some good food, privided that i dont forget that i am waiting for something to bake. Things that could be made, lemon peper shiskabob, fahjitas, buritos, eggs, french toast, pancakes, brownies(no not the special kinda), noodle koogle, Jello, Jello shots, frozen pizza, bbq burgers, spagetti, lasangia from sams club, ect.. I figure we can eat cheaper and better if we get food from the store and cook it our selves. Oh and the best reason for self cooked food, more time for gaming. And i know that mi\y grammer is poor, hence engineering instead of engrish, ok.

Actually, I lost my long black CAT5. I think I might have left it at Mathew's birthday party...

Posted by: Dream BBQ Child Posted on: Wednesday August 6 2003 3:30pm
I'm bringing my iBook so we will have the most intergrated lan party ever! And so I can look for music at the iTunes music store. :)

UT for the Mac has been discontinued :( Furthermore UT 2k3 still costs near 50 while the PC version has dropped in price. :( :( War III is coming down to a resonable amount though. Still, I'm not that in to War III . I have an XP dual boot install to do this Friday. We will have to see how many credits that job will pay before I decide to spring for another game.

Oh and I would like the oppertunity to challenge Crow again Lightsaber Vs. Lightsaber in Jedi Knight II as well. My iBook should be able to run that pretty good. Also I miss force pushing people off catwalks.

Cupcake not optimized yet, the others are. those reflect the low end fps stat on the much more demanding maps of the expansions, far more complex than the demo. And, the graphics settings are at about 75% quality. So, if you bottom out at 13 fps, and Aphex and Cupcake can double that with slightly better graphics, what's strange about that? Remember, a GeForce4-MX is not a very good video card, nor is a Pentium4 good at running UT. You have a better video card than both those systems. Intrigue, on the other hand, with a GeForce4-TI and AthlonXP, rocks out even at "holy shit" graphics settings, always getting more than 30 fps (at least, when not serving massive quantities of bots). And yes, Aphex still crashes in UT2003 but is fine in vanilla UT and other games. DBBQC hopes to come down early, and perhaps will look at it and see if he can unravel the cause.
Good news is i finished installing and updating all applicable games on Cupcake last night, so Crow can use that one, and Justin's Opteron parts may be arriving as soon as tomorrow, so it is very likely that AC can use Intrigue. So far, Aphex is just a convenient spare. It will probably be used by Eric B since he plans on leaving early and it wouldn't make much sense to haul a computer for just a few hours.

However, if you could both bring your own mice that would be good, as mine are crappy and Justin K may be short due to the new PC. Oh, and i think you have a long black Cat5 Crow? if you can bring it without disrupting your home, i'm sure we'll find a use for it. It keeps us from having to crimp cables at the last minute. ours are blue so it will be easy to keep track of.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Wednesday August 6 2003 2:59am
I just noticed, what's with the low FPS count on UT2KS for those comps? Hell, my P550 gets between 13-24 fps in the demo. Did you configure them with the optimizations Justin found? Does Aphex still randomly crap out?

I will volunteer to not bring a computer. That just mean I'm going to have to get my CD Burner functioning again so I can bring over some files of interest, but I still reserve the rights to bring my glowing keyboard and wireless mouse!

Posted by: justin Posted on: Tuesday August 5 2003 7:52pm
ah, good morning! How are you! t3h forum seems to work. now to use it!

The first issue: We're looking or volunteers to *not* bring computers. Setup will go faster if we reduce the number of machines arriving the day of the event. at least 2 spare machines will be available for the 16th, possibly as many as 4. This is preferable because I can set them up (install games, patch, network) far ahead of time, and not detract from precious gaming. Likely configurations include:
1. Cupcake: 2ghz P4, GeForce4-MX, 17in. LCD (~25fps in UT2003 at 1280x1024)
2. Intrigue: 1.67ghz AthlonXP, GeForce4-TI, 17in. LCD (+30fps in UT2003 at 1280x1024)
3. Aphex: 850mhz Thunderbird, GeForce2-GTS, 17in. CRT (~25fps in UT2003 at 1024x768)
If you were planning on bringing a machine that would underperform these, then we strongly encourage you to let us provide one instead. those with the weakest machines, and who are traveling, take priority. speak now!
