Work isn't far for me either. But then our generation seems to be smart when it comes to that. Truely though when it comes to the fallout form Katrina we are fortunate. At least we didn't lose anything that means something in this life. I saw some poor man on the news saying that he lost his wife. She told him that he couldn't hold on to her and to take care of the kids. Then... she was gone. I'm man enough to admit I teared up at that one. The very thought of not being able to hold on to whom I love in a similar situation... I dunno... I'd probaly let myself go too. I don't think I could live with that failure. To get to less important matters, yeah more altertative sources will come on line. My only question is when? Still, the biggest bitch of your post Crow is you're right on with the statement that SUV's will return. And so we'll be right where we are now in a few years again. Only then, the gas prices won't have a decent chance of coming back down someday. It would be nice too if we got the ball really rolling on Hydrogen Cars or SOMETHING. I'm even in favor of a good mass transit system. Sheeit, most people with drivers licenses shouldn't have them anyway. |

with gas at 4$ + a gallon, it might seem pointless to get any less than 40 mpg on a 20 mile daily commute, either cities are going to boom from this, or we finally might have the political capitol necessary to create some of those hydrogen cars. @4$ a gallon, a day at the track will cost close to 50$, when i started, it was more like 35$. :( intrigue |

| Well, there won't be an apocalypse when it comes to fuel, at least not for a long, long time. The higher the price of oil goes, the more alternative sources come online, such as coal and sand tar. Supply and demand, supply and demand. Even better for the long term, this means the middle east won't be nearly as central to the world's energy supply. It's actually in OPEC's interest to keep oil prices low, so expect them to scramble to up supply on the cheap stuff. So, worst case scienerio, we don't need the middle east anymore. Otherwise this is just one of those normal speed bumps you find in every commodity market, and SUVs will return. | |

Whatever. ;) Good think I live 3 miles from work. :) It wouldn't stop me from, say, going to a LAN or to Indy or anything if I had somewhere to go. Those poor souls in New Orleans though...that's about as bad as it gets. I've never seen a city evacuated like this before...but really, why have a city that's under sea level surrounded by water? I remember talking to Fridley and Matt K. about this awhile back, and how those pumps constantly pump millions of gallons of water out from under the city on a GOOD day. It's actually amazing that it hasn't happened until now. So...are the French going to come over and help us pump out the city? ;) I'm kidding. But seriously, I think the death toll from New Orleans getting completly swamped won't come close to the heatwave that hit France last summer. B_W |

--From CNN.com Consumers can expect retail gas prices to rise to $4 a gallon in the near future, Ben Brockwell, director of pricing at the Oil Price Information Service, said Wednesday. "There's no question gas will hit $4 a gallon," he said. "The question is how high will it go and how long will it last?" The old adjusted for inflation record was $3.11 so we'll clear that today or tomarrow. |

re: games The Delta Force Extreme is pretty swell! Although all that added realism makes it a lot harder than the original. No more steady hand at 1 km. so, yeah, i really need to fix that. re: gas The intertron tells me that W is going to unleash some of that "reserve" soon. We can only hope it's the steel reserve. Also, supposedly gas is still cheaper than it was in 1981 (minus inflation, of course). So it's not the apocalypse it could have been. Still, used SUVs are piling up on lots (up 50% from last year), which makes me smile inside and out. rss.msnbc.msn.com/id/8963421/ re: mac Eek! When trying to hard-refresh, the Mac started talking to me. Creepy! Well, at least it pronounces "spoo" correctly. re: Hunter S. Sorry to hear he was a killing machine. Seemed so promising... |

Well, I believe this gas price spike will pass. My perdiction is that we will be around 2.00 a gallon in four months. You heard it here first. Anyway, well my fluffy friend will be going back to the pound tomorrow. Unfortunatly he not only thrashed me harshly tonight (again) but attacked Marky B and Steve a few times while they were trying to edit. (actually when they came out of the suite) I am very, very sad. May I also encourage you that it wouldn't be a bad idea to write your congress peoples about the Amtrak too. Another source of federally funded transporation beyond Airplanes and Buses may not be a bad idea eh? With luck this mess is just a precursor of what is to come but that still wouldn't be a very lucky thing to have happen now would it? I could rant a very long time on the Amtrak/Mass Transit/Gas issues but I think I will digress. |

i am going through all of my books agian, and i there are a few programming books that are circa 1997-2003 and i dont think i need them any more. I thought i would make an offer to anyone on spoolan to have the books for free if they like. they cover c++ 3d game engine design-visualbasic 6.0-vb/sql. They are still great books, if you are just learning or not on the cutting edge of programming, i have fully moved to .net and xml so i dont think that i am going to need them. IF you know anyone that is interested in these books please let me know, before i try to resell them. Justin |

ok, so i have talked it over with pip, and this weekend it looks like we will be at katja's old place i am sending in the application right now, and baring no credit problems we will sign the lease later today or tommarrow. Pip is willing to host the lan event this labor day, and there will not be any other tennants in the house till the 23 of september. So we should be able to have some sweet action. Pip and i only have one rule, no drinks over carpet!!!! Neither of us want to ruin this place. SO WHO IS IN FOR SOME SWEET LAN ACTION!!!!!! PS. IF we dont get the place, Pip and i can still host the sweet action at JBLOCK Intrigue |

To add even more things going on Labor Day weekend, I'm having a fireworks extravaganza on Sunday September 4th on Cedar Lake. There'll be shells, bottle rockets, aerials, and more. Cedar Lake is only 35-45 minutes north west of Milwaukee and it's five minutes off of Hwy 41 or Hwy 45 if any one going to Green Bay is taking that route back to Milwaukee. There is also a fireworks store that is closing up for the season 15 minutes away. They're having a 50% off sale if you would like to bring anything of your own to light up. Festivities are planned to start at 8:00, but you can also come up early for swimming and fishing too. If anyone's interested, I can get you directions. Chief Justice of Smack |

I can easily take a monday off around October 8-10th for a "full-bore" Milwaukee LAN at that time. I want to take care of the O'Connor thing ASAP because: 1) Grandpa's health is failing 2) Grandma's flowers are fading So I'd rather not continue to postpone this indefinately. I will probably be taking care of that over Labor Day regardless. If there's a LAN up there to attend, that's fantastic, but this is more important. Gaming can occur whenever. |

Well, at this point, I would have to say the opposite. I would suggest a full bore LAN when everyone can participate, and doing those other things up in GB on an average weekend. We will be doing most of that stuff in one night, right? (shoot the video, burn the fire, light the fireworks, all @ one location, because we won't be going back to Justin's farm more than once, right?) We could even go up to GB on a Saturday morning, and come back Sunday afternoon, and that should give us plenty of time... B_W |

| I have a mid-semester break begining the weekend of October 8. So I cast my vote for then (even better if you can swing a Monday off and make it a three-day event) | |
| Posted by: nearscape | Posted on: Thursday August 25 2005 10:21am |
| Yes, I still want to do a Milwaukee event "for the rest of us". I want to do The Green over Labor day, because it's not really feasible on a 2-day mundane weekend. However, playing games (video, card, and otherwise) in Milwaukee over 2 days is more realistic. So I think we should pick another weekend in late September or early October for that. Also, last time I talked to Kump about it, he was willing to hit GB for saturday gaming, but he might have to return to The Good Land early for a poker tourney. | |

Well, I am totally down to participate in the 'Nearscape Summer Send Off'. (or NSSO, as it will be refered to as...) I can't wait to battle test my new X2 4400+. ;) Let's see...we need to take stock in our resources. This is the perfect use for this web-forum. ;) Finally used for something other than what it's normally used for! 1. How many can you sleep up there DBBQC? 2. How many CPU's can you support? 3. Will table space, or chairs be an issue? OK, if we do this Labor day, that will kill our city wide LAN. Now, if Kump, Crow, Johnney, etc. won't come up north, I want to have an event for them too. Crow, any way to convice you to drive up North? You have a vehicle that would definatly help us get any tables and gear going. If I picked up the foreign oil would that suffice, or do you need to be bribed in some other way? I will contact Johnney to see if he would be down for this adventure. Nearscape, why don't you contact the gothsicles to see if they would be down. Kump is probably a no-go, but who knows. Ok. Let me think...that should get us started. So, in conclusion, we need to 1. support a LAN of this size up north, and 2. convice those who might not want to go...to go. Otherwise we could just blaze it up, blow it up, and shoot some vids at the ranch. That we could easily do in a weekend, and leave labor day to the city. Let's see how this plays. B_W |

| So should I start spreading the word around here for a GB LAN or at least GB festivities? | |

Whisky asked "what would we play, anyway?" and I found something...o www.novalogic.com/games.asp?GameKey=DFX old-school Delta Force action in a pretty, modified Joint Ops engine. Soooo good! I guess I concur with The Green Bay plan. Before the summer's over I would really like to: 1) Build a blazing bonfire 2) Light up those Indian fireworks 3) Shoot some video at the O'Connor farm 4) LAN with Ben A. Labor Day is still the best time for this, I think. Then back to regular gaming in Milwaukee in a month or so. |

Well, I didn't say LAN...I just ment going up to GB for a weekend and having fun...not a full blown Lan. I don't think that's feasable...with Jim and Matt K., and Johnney and such. But I am down for coming up for a weekend, and if JB and I want to bring boxes, and three or so can join us from GB, well, we might just have one anyway. But I would be up for a weekend of fun, playing cards, watching movies, and drinking. ;) D.R. |

If FCP uses anything Altivec (so if it requries a G4) it will not work even with Rosetta and a full recomplie will be required. Sse3 will not get the job done until that recompile happens, from my understanding. I want to argue the "it just works" point but I can't. After all I did buy an iBook that the logic board could crap out at anytime and I get the most bizzare problems tring to communicate with Joci from time to time over iChat. But, I do think those problems are more network related. I'm not going to give the "it just works" crown to MS either. I vote instead for HACKER PSCHOOR! And for Nearscape I'll make that HACKER PSCHOOR IN A KEG! For Big_Whisky and Big_Whisky alone I'll make it WHISKY SOURS IN A PITCHER! Oh yeah, you don't have to stranglehold the hardware compatabilty thing either. Me, after Linux, I just like having some assurance that someone somewhere got the bloody thing to reboot AFTER installing the driver. Oh yeah, are we getting any closer on a final place for H-O-T L-A-N action? I'd still be happy to have ya'll up here hey ya there guys. |

This is a very interesting time... ;) The articles I read stated that both Intel and AMD64 people were getting it to work at speed. Right now i would like to try it just to be a 1337 H@x0r...but the possibility for getting $h17 done is still there. I don't know why, but the thought of an Apple OS on non-apple hardware is intoxicating. ;) Would apple ever offer their OS to the masses? If so, why would they do that? I would buy it...just to be silly. I wouldn't buy a 'pro-series' mouse to go with it though. ;) B_W |
|
| Posted by: nearscape | Posted on: Tuesday August 16 2005 1:11pm |
| You can tri-boot, yes, just maybe not with your hardware. I didn't read every one of those articles, but what I did read were Intel-only solutions (such as the Uneasy Silence version), and Rosetta functionality was still limited, so to me it seens like "not quite yet" to your FCP question B_W. But Kruger seems to think otherwise so go check those 5 links. And if I recall Jobs's keynote properly, you'll need new universal binaries to really take advantage of x86 speed, so until Apple releases those for their pro apps (and I'm sure they're in no rush until their new Intel PowerMacs are ready), or you get ahold of the FCP source code, you may just be emulating PPC. But hopefully DBBQC can clarify that...? | |

So, can I tri-boot xp32, xp64, and OSX yet, and can I run FCP? Yes or no? ;) B_W Because if I can, I will. |

oh yeah, I'm all for the whole hardware compatibility testing thing. But you don't need to stranglehold it. I would hope that Apple would put OSX in a box with a list of supported components on the side. "Buy this stuff and have fun; if you buy other stuff you're on your own." Just like pretty much every other manufacturer out there (like say Avid or Matrox). I just want to get around paying the extra $1,500 to have them stamp their logo on a cheese grater. The actual components have been similar for years I thought (same basic HDD, memory, video, etc.), both in tech and in fair-market price. I don't need Culpertino to put it in an expensive box for me. And as my Backlot Mac Escapades have shown, just because that $855 "logic board" is Apple assembled and tested doesn't mean it won't blow up after a year of use. For me, the "it just works" crown still belongs to Microsoft. I can reinstall Windows easily enough (though I haven't had to in 7 years on my own machines). I can't do dick about that "logic board", nor can I replace the data on that Apple-store-bought LaCie FireWire drive that gets wiped when the "kernel panicks". OS X is fantastic. But it's also tragic that as long as it is slaved to crap-ass Apple hardware, it will never realize it's full potential. Nor will Apple apps get the market share they deserve. |

As it is I wouldn't mind seeing OS X put up a nice fight vs. Windows Vista. I don't know if it will happen because I don't know if the application support is going to be there. Still, Apple selling hardware for those who need PowerPC backward compatabilty and selling the OS to all who want it seems like the smart business move to me. After all, it does not matter what Apple's engieneers do, some DVD Jon like guy will always make OS X go on non-apple hardware since they've left the PowerPC. So do they want to profit off OS X running on non-Apple hardware or not, or would they prefer another fun legal battle instead? I dunno. I guess if you have lawyers you gotta have them do something. Even though making em' sit on a stick and spin might be the best idea. :) Since we're on the subject let's not kid ourselves, Linux will also end up on the Xbox 360. All I know for sure is I do not want to see OS X go away nor do I want to see it open sourced. OS X is, in my opnion, the best OS out there right now. I do not like the idea of polluting OS X with some kext written by some developer, maybe even wannabe developer, somewhere. I don't even like installing a windows driver that hasn't been tested by MS. Not that I've had any problems on Windows but it still bugs me. Mainly because of my history with Linux. One of the greatest, and yes worst, things about OS X is it either works or it doesn't. None of that turn your hair gray, gray area that Windows has. So for that reason I would prefer to run Apple approved hardware configs. Not because of superiority. Just because someone sat down with it and banged on it a while to give me a measure of assurance that it works. And given that I am a software engineer, coming back to my place of residence and having a machine that just works means something to me to the point that I will pay for it. But, things will play out as they will and I'm sure before too long after it's released I'll be running Windows Vista and telling myself, "It's not that bad." I don't want to say that Apple is going to have a rough go of it but Apple has always been kinda touchy feely. Now that they pretty much are making this a OS X vs. Windows battle, instead of holding onto a nitche market with a rabbid and reliable cult following, they have got to start showing that OS X comes With-a Teeth-uh. If they don't start marketing OS X as a serious alternative to Windows that does good in Graphic Design firms but it also does a helluva job in a bank I don't know how long that campus in Culpertino will be able to keep its doors open. Anyway, that's just my opnion. I could be wrong. But Windows is a juggernaught that won't easily be felled. No matter how much it deserves to be. Crippling OpenGL. Come ON! May some developer somewhere crack that one too. I won't like running that fix either but it's better than the disease of interpreting OpenGL into DirectX. |

| Nearscape, don't you realize that Apple is a hardware company, not a software one? That's why they have other companies make their components while they do all the coding! What's so hard to understand about this? | |
| Posted by: nearscape | Posted on: Monday August 15 2005 10:27am |
| Well, I had kinda hoped they'd wait until those Leopard MacIntels were closer to release so that Jobs has less time to fuck it up...so now we'll see what the response is, if any. Maybe he'll do the right thing and actually sell software to people that want to buy it? Or he'll adopt typical corporate american arrogance and further entrench. If the forum noise is any indication, beige boxes running OSX isn't going to stop Mac zealots from buying Macs, because you know, they're better and all that. They've staked their reputation on hardware superiority, so this isn't likely to hurt cheese grater sales. | |

Spoke with Matt "Iluvatar" K and Intrigue, and they're pretty flexible. We're gonna brainstorm a bit and see what our options are in Milwaukee as well. Did you ever get that pickup truck DBBQC? Oh, and speaking of hammering, I uploaded a bunch of UT 2004 stuff to replace the defunct UT99 section. Hit the games section and do some refreshin' if you want to see it. Yeah, there's more than one "feature" in the tea timer right now. Actually, parking is easier in the village of Ash. They don't care if you park on the road overnight. Anyway, the par-tay would be from the 2ed through the 5th. I don't know about Derek but Jon sounded enthused about a lan here. Frank has been WOWing but I'm sure he'd be happy to play too. Also, my apartment should be able to handle the load of electricity and gamerz no problem. One thing I have is space. And 2 kittens for those who want to enjoy a little down time. Did I mention the happy german beer? Crow, there is always Das Greyhound. :) I gotta pass that torch onto someone. |

| Here's the thing: if you want me to come then this won't be a four day super LAN, as I won't be able to get into Milwaukee until LATE Friday, which means that the carpool wouldn't be arriving until VERY LATE Friday or VERY EARLY Saturday. I'm thinking it's better if I sit this one out, guys. | |

so this next LAN party...when is Labor day again? We're talking around Sept 3rd right? I'm gonna update some stuff around here today while I wait for this Pulgari action to digitize... It seems support for the Bay of Green LAN has been somewhat flaccid. One thing to consider is that while it reduces the odds of participation for some (EB, Franz), it dramatically increases ease of attendance for others (such as Ben A, Chad J, and DBBQC's UWGB friends). For this reason I suspect the numbers would be about equivalent wherever it is held (and since the past has shown that Milwaukee LANs in no way guarantee the attendance of EB and Franz anywayz...). I understand CrowScape's concern, but I think that if we get our shit together and carpool like sensible humans, it wouldn't be so bad to go the extra 90 minutes, as the company would be superb, and the gas costs shared. Other things to consider... 1) Parking is easier in the Bay of Green 2) Kruger may be moving 3) My new apartment is small and untested. I do want to break it in at some point, but maybe that shouldn't be done on a four-day-super-LAN. Perhaps later in the year when we don't need add the AC to the already strained power situation (and the sunlight in the afternoon hours is somewhat less harsh). But on the other hand, if we do party at Juneau, we can take pool breaks. But as the man says, I'm down no matter what happens. Gaming must occur; the details are trivial. |

Greetings all, I am also planning a trip to Tokyo, but possibly a little later than Matt. (my parents will probably come down for the holiday, or something, so I will need to be here) Anyway, right now I was thinking early january...like the 12th, to arrive on the 13th. The kicker is that my main man NG will be joining us, and since he works for Clarion hotels can get us rooms in Downtown Tokyo for $25 a night. (up to 4...rooms) So that should be 'trick-nasty'. (aka good) From what I am seeing, airfare is running about $1,110 to $1,200. Yeah. But that's what I paid for NYC with room, so I am not phased. Let me know what's sweet and what is unsweetened. David p.s. I am mainly going to concintrate on TOKYO, but will have 5 daze to play (minus travel daze total daze will be like eight or nine) so I am down for hitting whatever. |

that is a tough time to get good airfare, but from what i saw with hawaii if you login to travelocity and then browse for flight times, you will then get emails with great rates, about half of what i paid, the problem was that i had fixed dates to work with, the more flexible the dates, the beter the price. also, from what i saw in the airport, you should be there 2-4 hours early for international flights, security is a big deal for those flights and you have a tendancy to go through several checks that are different than national travel. also i need to get a passport still, anyone else in this delema see me, my problem is two parts, one i need to get a new birth certificate, and then the passport, my ma thinks i a might stay overseas, because i will fall in love i with some exotic foreign woman, and then never come home. out of all of her bitching and complaining, i think this is the most likely senerio of any of them, definitly more likely than getting eaten by bears in a forest perserve, or the world ending. (tokyo girls are cute);-) this will be a long flight for anyone that goes, and it will be verrrrrrrrryyyyyyyy dry at 30-50,000ft, i saw a number of people wearing masks to keep the humidity in, also the in flight videos tend to suck, so if we go, i sugest some verry time consuming activity like reading or a portable player or something that has batteries to last more than 10 hours. oh, first class might be worth it if you can afford the difference, as those seats can recline almost all the way, and coach is like any standard airline seat, crowded. Some airlines also have wifi and laptop charging ports for those that are interested, but agian those might only be first class features. |

Yo peeps that are thinking of going to Japan at the end of the year! Right now I'm planning on leaving on December 26th in the morning from Chicago. Airfare to Nagoya is about the same as it is to Tokyo so I'm planning on going in there. Save some green on post-arrival transportation. As it is now I don't know 100% regarding my return. I don't want to leave on new years day so I'm currently thinking the 2ed but I'll have to see about that (Technically, I won't have any vacation time yet at work.) Cost just to get an ass to Japan and back is looking to be about $1100-$1300. This does not include getting from the airport to Echigawa. Anyway, Joci said the more the marrier so if you would like to go, now is a good time to start planning (And maybe one of us will stumble onto better airfare. I have to talk to a bunch of people about that yet myself.) |

i dont know where i am living yet, and sept 5th is going to be right in the middle of my living situation, but if there is someplace else that we can settle on at gen con, i can move my high speed computers, and (5)lcd displays to the lan location early, i have 8 machines capable of playing modern games, although we may only want to use 6 of them for gaming, the others would make great servers, since that is what they are doing now. 3 portable computers 2amd64 laptops, 1 1.8ghz craptel pentium m tabletpc 3 amd64 >=2.0ghz desktop computers with modern graphics 1 windows 2003 domain controler and dhcp admin (1.4 ghz athlon k7)(not gameable anymore, too slow, but great for setting a network up with no worries) 1 amd64 >1.4ghz raid file and game server with 750gb of avalible storage space 1 amd64 exchange server that doesnot work with 6200 pci express nvidia graphics card(maybe gameable for lan party) ----------------------------------------------------------- total 8 fast machines, 6 of them gameable, maybe 7 1 24 port gigabit layer 3 lan switch 3 8 port gigabit lan switches 2 wireless Accesspoints 2 routers/ gateways 2 gaming tables - WxLxH 30"x72"x29" (one foldable(black), the other is not(light grey)) gosh, you migh think i was trying to start a technology company or something |

The only question is wheather Kumph, EricB, JT, Krug, possibly Kat and Bry, and Lucky are down for said action. Because if most of them don't show, it's not a LAN, it's a LAME. CS, dont worry, longhorn doesnt do anything yet except look pretty and act like a mix of mandrake linux and mac os x. I tried the 64bit version of the software and i was hoping that i could use the 64bit drivers that nvidia had, but :( longhorn uses yet another new driver model, so i can only use the emulated drivers that ship with longhorn :(, i guess it is better than no drivers, and these are way faster than the emulated drivers that ship with xp so i guess it is an improvement, i have also not had to configure one thing for windows to get up and running, NOT ONE SETTING. I am going to be a little less daring and try a 32 bit version of longhorn soon, i think there are graphics drivers for it, so maybe i can play wow on longhorn, i guess only time will tell. until then longhorn is just pretty and infecting it is kinda useless, since longhorn is useless. oh, one more thing, windows vista is still pretty convinced that it is longhorn, maybe that is why there will be a beta 2, for the average consumer, we wouldnt want them to think this was longhorn too, its windows vista. |

I ordered the videos for defcon13, oh lucky number 13, there are 121 cds worth of content, ntsc video, and some cds are mp3 audio only. This disc set also includes the black hat confrences. Once I determine how many video hours there are, I will set up a viewing schedule for saturday mornings. I still dont know how I will play them, but i should beable to play them on a computer or maybe on the 1337 hackedBOX :). Because you know what they say, "you cant hack all day, unless you start in the morning!!!!!!!" These discs are expensive and the information on them really leads in nicecly to what you will expect from the biggest experts in computing and security over the next year. These are the people that do things and think about the consiquences later, so lets watch some media and the 2006 hacking year unfold. Last year I meet "Bunnie" hung at defcon the original hacker of the xbox, as well as "the Waz," the orginal creator of the Apple computer, he was there on his segways. I hope these saturday morning sessions attract a group of passionate people interested in the details of computing and security. |

| I am here to divulge an insidious plot. The chinese buffet restaurants are working to screw everyone over. First, CJOS and I find out that they closed China Lilly. Now the China Garden on MU campus has raised its prices by a dollar. Outrage! Also...POOT! | |

The great unpleasantness has subsided. The broken remains of a once great man have been returned to the land of his lineage. B_W also, that sky thing is a joke. |

"For example, any time you're talking about a hotel or B&B establishment these days, you'll need modern fire supression, and I don't see any sprinklers in those photos (or even smoke detectors). " Unless you're Marquette University who just pays off the City of Milwaukee.... :cough:Cudahy Hall:cough: (and you can't tell me McCormick is up to code!) -A |

I was kidding about the be being in part. I blame the corporate lifestyle. My sarcasm meter is off the chart. As to my erection meter...well, I will leave that up to your wildest imagination. My brain is cooked. Serve it up. Serve it up with grits. Greasy, greasy, grits. Or some Lithuanian dish. Either way... B_W |

Maybe Fon Du Lac is pretty cool with mixed use zoning, or that could just be a wish list. ;) Yeah, it "could" be used for any of those things, theoretically, but first you have to jump through these hoops... so choose one. Just being the devil's advocate here, but aren't there different building codes you must meet for different uses? For the bargain they're selling at, there's no way that building meets all codes for all those listed uses. For example, any time you're talking about a hotel or B&B establishment these days, you'll need modern fire supression, and I don't see any sprinklers in those photos (or even smoke detectors). Just stuff to look for when you get that tour. ;) There's big difference between an artist loft and a law firm, so it's unlikely that the building is ready to be both of those right now as the list suggests. Also, Kruger's accounting doesn't include maintenance on those 67,000 sq. feet. I have an uncle who attempted a similar project on about half this scale, and the maintenance is where all the money goes. You could spend $20,000 a year DIY, or have someone else do it for $40k, and that's just essentials like keeping the 130-year-old roof from leaking and pipes from freezing. If you are going to furnish the place...well, that's a whole new universe of expense. So I think the notion of being profitable, at least in the first several years, is unreasonable. Given the lack of moneyed goths in the midwest, most likely you'd lose a million getting started and be lucky if you can charge half of those prime rates. |

ns... that gothic building is being advertised as able to be used for Use for a Corporate Offices, Retreat Center, Bed & Breakfast with Restaurant, Assisted Living, Boarding School, Law offices, Medical Offices, Design / Art Studio, business headquarters. so I would guess it's already zoned for business use. Also, you can't see what's next to it. For all we know it could be other businesses, kind of like the old Pabst Mansion is in the middle of a few businesses on Wisconsin Ave. Ok, not the greatest example, but it's the best I can come up with. In fact, I think the only real problem would be the nightclub.. You might not be able to pull that off. But again, what do I know! -A |

Intrigue, I take it by your posts that you are back now. Would it be possible for me to pick up that computer, if you are still willing to part with it? I'm headed over to the Third Ward to see Nearscape today anyway. Let me know. |

Breaking APPLE NEWS Apple uses multi button mouse and scroll ball for "Mighty Mouse" that is currently avalible at the Apple store. www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1215 [Warning the following is tounge and check] I guess Mactel systems wont work without a multi button mouse so Apple is getting its users used to the multibutton mouse now, so that the transition to worse hardware wont hurt so much. They can then talk about how multiple mouse buttons is such an innovation that Apple came up with it first and how that proves Apples dominance. Because Apple always has better hardware. ;-) They are infact a hardware company and not a software company, that leases all of its hardware from other manufacturers and they write thier own software, someday someone at apple will have to explain this to me, its kinda like the mistery of what is "area 51". |

You'd have to check the zoning regs. Most likely you can't do any of those things without some serious fees and lobbying. I'm betting that's one of the reasons they're trying to offload it cheap. And you're going to be in constant war with the neighborhood. So, I got the iTunes 4.9 and now I'm checking out the podcasts. After a very quick gothic search I came up with "Dead Air Digital" out of the U of Calgary, and have been letting those beats drop as I work into the night.... night... late at night...... |

the morgage payment on "daves home for tortured souls" would be close to 60k a year a mear fee when compared to the salvation that one might recieve from having a home for the tormented korporate folks out there. Finacial notes morgage payment Yearly 60,000$ or 5,000$ per month -thats 22$ per sqft(average cost for a home in america is like 80$ a sqft) -this is 37,000 sqft, our frat house was 6,000 sqft Taxes 4-5,000 for the first year, i would guess that his goes to 12-20,000$ after we have a sustained profitable use, and then up from there Utilities 400-500$ per month( I would guess 1-2,000$ when in use) expected expenses are close to 7-8,000$ per month unique hotels can rent rooms at 100-300$ per night i think there are 7 bedrooms so 7br x 50% occ x 15 nights a month x 150$ a night = 7,875$ a month in rental fees, and there is still room for a night club, a restruant, and a gift shop. just think "the worlds only gothic retreat" sooooooo korporate |
