PAX? Don't you know they're the "i" network now? Oh wait.. What? You're not talking about the TV network?

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Monday August 28 2006 6:10pm
I'd really like to go to PAX, especially now that it will be "the new E3". But I also like to go to GenCon. Earth Con, not so much. I'll probably depend on my raise.

Anyone want to try and have a LAN party later in September or maybe October? Or are we waiting for the UT2007 demo or something?

Posted by: Peter Posted on: Monday August 28 2006 1:48pm
Screw PAX. Next year, I'm skipping Gen Con to go to Earth Con V!

I believe the proper term was 'the virus that causes AIDS'. Kinda like 'Bears football presented by Bank One', or, 'The Artist Formerly Know as Prince'. Technically there isn't an AIDS virus, but whose counting.

So...the bigger question is...who is getting the vaccine? Crow? Intrigue?

Posted by: intrigue Posted on: Tuesday August 22 2006 10:24am
i feel like going all black like Dave and JB, and you all know how much i like color, SciFi canceled an 11th season of Stargate SG-1, they are going to keep Atlantis for now, though

http://slashdot.org/articles/06/08/22/130227.shtml

my bet is that they are going to combine the chars down to a single show, Atlantis

SG-1 has really gotten down to the monster of the week, but i think it would be really interesting to explore what would happen if they opened up the gate to the world, kinda like Caprica of BSG will intro how AI was developed or how B5 wrangled in a coexistance amongst many. The idea of 4 explorers walking through a gate might have gotten its fair share at 10 years, but the idea of a Stargate, i think still has alot of stories to share.

Its the Chinese government, what do you expect? They have never treated their citizens properly or with what we term human rights. Viva la Communism.

Posted by: intrigue Posted on: Monday August 21 2006 2:53pm
i find it odd that we are more concerned about grammar choices, than the fact that the Chinese government payed 250$ towards each of the 49 volenteers of a human AIDS vaccine trial, that injected a real version of the virus into a living human body.

this is just facinating

Posted by: eygx0r Posted on: Monday August 21 2006 2:35pm
I thought saying "the AIDS virus" was the same as saying HIV. More wordy, but equally acceptable.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Monday August 21 2006 1:16pm
There's an AIDS virus? That's news to me. I thought it was HIV.

Posted by: intrigue Posted on: Monday August 21 2006 9:02am
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2006-08/18/content_4980121.htm

china got 49 people to volenteer for a phase 1 test of an AIDS vaccine, and the test appears to be successfull at the 49 people appear to have an imunity to the AIDS virus.

OK, this is wak, as you would at some point need to test a live AIDS virus to determine if an immunity exists, because increased white blood cell count with dead viri, doesn't mean jack shit as AIDS uses t-cells to multiply, peter, do i have this right, or am i way off base?

the weird thing about this is that if i am right, then it sounds more like China volenteered these people for the study, and now they are seeking 800 people for a phase 2 study.

Gencon was like a lanparty with 40 thousand people that you did not even know and enedup playing card, table top, board and book based RPGs with for nearly days straight.

Highlights:
Wed night (arival) we warchested it up and partied till 1am

Thursday Dave and I had several schedule events and even prepaid for that we slept through(pwnd).

Visited the convention hall and saw a ton of cool games from, the new bruning crusade, to a magnetic shufle board game, to dice and book games galore.

Friday was a busy day
Jon and I hit the floor early for a little Gladiator action, where we got to use LARPing Weapons in a full out brawl with Gladiators. Jon and I suffered minor injuries from the agility contest as we had to quickly crawl on the floor without any disturbing bells and managed to avoid further injury from the gladiators themselves.

Later several of us played the National Security Desicion Making Game this is a fun and mostly free formed RPG game that usually deals with some world military crisis. Jon(T), Matt(S), Mike, and myself all found odd roles to participate in, I was the Saudi Exiled Democrats, who were so liberal that they were kicked out of the Saudi court as a request from the previous King.

Jon and I then found out way to a Seminar about how to create your own gaming company, the world series of poker tournement, only to be followed by some mayham at the ICE ULTRA LOUNGE with Azoica

Saturday followed with some early morning activities at Indianapolis'es Art museum with Jon Thoms, and his family. Jon and I later found our way to a discussion with AI greatest show, BSG, and one of its largest fans, the actor that plays Tom Zarrek.

In the near late Saturday eve, I got to play Gen Con's true dungeon "escape", as a Wizzard(Mage). It was such a blast, and I did get to cast Magic Missle into the Darkness as part of a pre-emptive attack on "some evil." TrueDungeon was a really awsome experiance, definately worth the money.

We finished up the con and the night with a kick ass perfromance from the Gothsicles and Cruciform.

Sunday was mostly sleeping, driving, sleeping while driving, and Initech Guilded WoW.

There's a film going around called "Who Killed the Electric Car" that folks who are interested in why we are now using expensive, inefficient hybrids instead of actual electric cars should probably see. It is about the GM EV1, launched in California in the mid 90's.

Hunters: Do Not Play With The Protein.

The multiplayer options for Prey are diappointing. There are only two game types: Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch. Additionally, there are only eight maps. Still, I was able to get into a highly unstable orbit around the small planetoid in Spindal Sphere, which was cool.

Gears of War "Emergence Day", which should be the first full Unreal Engine 3 launch, is November 12th.
Also, the Mark Rein of Epic, who is basically in charge of the dominant next gen development platform, has confirmed my claims that demos delay finished games.

Currently I can be found as Darmok Jilad, license 2/3/2/1/2, usually mining for Ishik ore deep in Itani space ice belts. I prefer my Wraith cargo runner(http://www.vo-wiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Wraith), as it can carry a scanner, a large mining cutter, and weapon at the same time. But I recently purchased a basic Alas (http://www.vo-wiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Atlas), or "the Boat" as I call it for really long cargo runs.

Regarding peer review, isn't that what GDC is for?

Anyone see those clips of Kerry getting WTFPWND by Bolton? Now that's what I call prime time entertainment.

Posted by: Prime Posted on: Wednesday August 2 2006 12:22pm
If John Kerry were president E3 wouldn't be changing formats!!

Also with our current mayor I highly doubt he will do anything to pick up some of the E3 slack because from what I understand he didn't like GenCon.

Posted by: intrigue Posted on: Wednesday August 2 2006 11:45am
the problem is in the game dev process, not in the event. if you can merge the agile process with the waterfall process, then you always have a working demo, it just does not have many features. the point of demos is to get user feed back on game play, not to make sales, and from what i understand that was more the problem.

as jeff calls it, Posturing, became the focus, and not peer review.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Wednesday August 2 2006 7:57am
I dunno, it seems to me that games are going to have to stand more on gameplay than marketing dollars now. I think that will actually make it easier for the little guy, as long as he has a good product. At E3, the complaint was always that the press always went to the most expensive spectacle, with the independent innovation stuck out in Kentia Hall.

Also, when I'm developing am interactive product at work, and I've only got 50% the content approved and 75% of the code engine done, and the "publisher" (or in this case, the account executive) is pushing for a working demo for some tradeshow or sales meeting, I end up wasting a bunch of time taking bad shortcuts just to kick the premature demo out, and then having to go back and undo and fix all that before the actual product ships. It does delay stuff, and waste a ton of money. Better to do it right the first time and let the press ride on the final product, rather than a premature duct-tape-chicken-wire demo that may not represent the final product (as is usually the case with bullshit E3 demos, as Tycho often laments).

Posted by: intrigue Posted on: Tuesday August 1 2006 5:51pm
i hate to see it, but AMD needs to complete this merger and get rolling they have an intel to beat

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1996932,00.asp

Posted by: Intrigue Posted on: Tuesday August 1 2006 4:27pm
Canceling E3 is like not allowing extentions, having E3 to demo games means that if they dont get it right for E3 they still have a second shot to get it for Christmass. Canceling E3 means that developers are going to let press demos slide until weeks before Christmass, and then some bonehead is going to push it to the next year, this is going to delay games more. A good showing at E3 ment that your marketing would be done for you come the fall, now only a few titles will break through the press line come Christmass, the media will focus on one or two titles and it will be hard for the little guy. Having E3 ment you had 4 days to show off your game to the press and blogsphere, and then they could druel over it all summer.

I only HOPE mke could steal this opp to create a consumer friendly version of E3

Posted by: B_W Posted on: Tuesday August 1 2006 2:21pm
I'm not so much a big fan of hype, but really, isn't that what it's all about? This is kinda like having football without the super bowl. I understand that it will streamline things, but without one big hoopla event, how will they sell the sizzle?

Perhaps you're right, perhaps it's a good thing.

However, the tabletop gaming industry doesn't need GenCon, and everything is hyped there toward that...but that doesn't mean they need to get rid of it. :) I knew things were going south when they eliminated the booth babes. ;)

B_W

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Tuesday August 1 2006 12:56pm
I appreciate the point that if developers didn't waste so much time on E3 hype, we might see finished games 4 months earlier. ;)
