Oh! Can I be in charge of building a completely scientificly accurate version of Discovery? Just to make sure everything is legit, we'll have to actually fly it to Jupiter and get it into orbit, naturally. The good thing about it is we can actually film IN SPACE, thus cutting down on the need to have scientists validate every frame for accuracy.

And another thing, I have begun work on my "2001 a Space Odyessy" Fan Film. It will take me 17 years, and I will have three scientists sign off on each frame to ensure it's accuracy. If anyone would like to help I will need at least 47 hours of your time a week. (minimum) It should be a pretty fun side project...

Oh yeah, and play "Desert Combat".

Guess what? I found the most fun game ever! Guess what that is? Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat! It's hot. It's fun. The units are great. The combat is clean and fun. And...we can all play it! Oh, did I mention the helicopters? Can you say Drunken fun? Can you? CAN YOU???? Oh my goodness this makes my whole f***ing week! I got a super beat down, but it was all worth it for this game! The mod (it's a bf1942 mod by the way) is like 800megs alone. If you got battlefield, get Desert Combat. If you don't have Battlefield...get it! Then get Desert Combat. This is incredible people. I don't use obsenity for bad games, trust me this is super hot. Get it, live it, love it. Oh yeah! OH YEAH!

Big_Whisky out.

P.S. there is a way for Big_Whisky to appear. For superman, he changes his clothes. For Big_Whisky, he drinks a shot of blended whiksy, with a shot of bourbon whisky at the same time. Expect an appearance on the 10th. And prepair to get kicked, just as hard as I do at IV. Oh yeah!

I think I posted a link to this game on the Trap moons ago. Has anyone tried this yet?

Is there any lower-er end systems down there you can try XIII on? I've been eyeing that game myself a while and see that their min requirements are my PC, though they reccommend a 1Ghz box. I don't have $50 or whatever it costs to pitter away so I'z just curious to know how well it goes on a failed box line mine. :)

Pitter?

Well, if your looking for a processor mobo combo go for an Nforce 2, I prefer MSI but that's just me, check out Newegg to see what's out there. As far as a processor goes, I have a barton 2500, they are pretty cheap and pretty good. For ram, you can't go wrong with Corsair value select 3200. For video I like the Nvidia [ultra] FX5600 [flip-chip], but if your looking for something more robust the 5900 is an excellent model. I enjoy the gainward 'golden sample' nvidia cards, but there are other brands that are just as good.

Hope that helps.

If you're doing a bare-bones system then you really don't have much of a choice in terms of mobos, as I don't think flex-ATX boards are sold independant of a bare-bones system.

Ok guys.. Here's the deal.. I'm probably going to get a bare-bones kit and salvage a computer my brother is giving up to make a pretty good game system, what processor/mb/ram/video should I be looking for?

Greetings all,
Well, I have just checked out XIII, and it looks pretty hot. It's got all the Lan game modes we love so much, and it runs pretty smooth. I suggest that some or all of us give it a look before the event. It could be a very good thing.

As per ususal.

If Delta Force 1 Trigger Happy, or Yoda's Bitch, or It burns when I pee, can't play.

Posted by: justin Posted on: Sunday December 14 2003 2:17pm
ok, the schedule is up for the tenth.
moving right along...its time for a retro gathering, methinks (especially after playing Blood last night and rediscovering how much games like that kick ass). I'm thinking this will probably be my birthday present to myself in a way...so the closest Saturday is the 14th of February, but that may get moved to the 7th depending on feedback. I would like to see:
ROTT
Duke 3D
Delta Force 1
Blood
Quake 1: Team Fortress
The last 3 seem to work fine on modern-ish computers (although Glide acceleration and Win98 First Edition seem to be ideal). I will try and set up a few machines before then.
Getting networking to run on ROTT and Duke will likely be harrowing. With Duke, we will probably go the route of a recent port of the source code for modern OSes. For ROTT, well, we'll need to do some research, so if there are any fans out there (i know of at least 1.5 besides myself). I don't think the source ports are ready yet, so we may want to just go completely old-skewl and set up some DOS partitions or something. Anybody remember how to write config.sys and autoexec.bat files?

I am buying Unreal 2 as well, and i'm sure i can talk Justin into it.
Here's the link for the $10 version i was telling you about...
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=308428
slightly fishy now that i examine it, as it actually requires a rebate and appears to be "jewel case only" (whatever that means). FYI, Amazon has it listed at $18, and Best Buy for $20, so there are plenty of ways to get this game without breaking the bank. Even if Unreal 2 itself sucks (the reviews vary, bit it has to be better than Half-Life 2, duh!), XMP is worth *at least* $20 of my time.

Remember my one complaint about the snipers being too powerful? Well, there is already a mutator out that fixes that. Also, as i catch up on my http://www.beyondunreal.com news, I see that the Double Enforcer mutator (replaces UT2003 default weapon with UT_98 style) is out, so that's one less legitimate complaint against UT2003. Also, stop by http://fraghouse.beyondunreal.com/ and make sure to get Fraghouse Invasion and the newly released Extras Pack for it.

So I was drinking all this Bourbon, and...wait, that's not what I ment to talk about! I tried XMP last night and I must say that it was pretty hot. The capture system was pretty good, I don't quite know exactly what was supposed to be going on, but it was good none the less. I will buy Unreal II for it.

I just put together a $20,000 computer package at www.apple.com. Without a digital camera, i might add.

now THAT's comedy!

Ok, the event pages are ready, back to my regularily scheduled rant about XMP, also known as "Crack for your Computer". All ya'll Tribes vets remember the clever little gametype "Find and Retrieve" buried deep within the original game? The multiple flags? How I always said it was the best new concept in the game, except that a balanced game of it never seemed to occur (mainly due to a lack of good maps and interested players)?

Well, someone on the XMP team may have been paying attention. At first, i thought the "capture the Artifact" objective would be just like normal CTF and not very creative at all. But as i actually play more big games online, it turns out to be something completely differnet: Find and Retrieve that works. You need 4 artifact caps to win, but here's the thing...even after you cap, the artifacts can be re-stolen by the other team to undo your work. Also, you don't have to cap one at a time like in CTF. All 4 artifacts can be in the field at the same time, just like F&R, which makes for come crazy chases. And since the "artifact node" (your capture point) requires a high level of power and technology to operate, you need to keep a presence in the midfield fighting over extra generators at all times. These dynamics combine to pretty much eliminate the dreaded "flag standoff", which i believe is the first time this has been accomplished in the genre. Phenomenal.

Also, you know how frustrating it is to be assaulting an enemy fortification/generator, only to be driven out by constant respawning in that room? Well, they even came up with a solution for that problem, without simply moving the spawn points away from everything of strategic importance (basically what Tribes 2 did). In XMP, you spawn at "Deploy Nodes" which are physical structures, most of which you can hack, and also require power. There is a limit to how rapidly a given deploy point can spit out players, which varies slightly based on your power generation, team size, and the number of points in your control. Typically, the "cooldown" period for a given node is around 20 seconds, and spawn is preceeded by an animation of the equipment (so players don't just pop in without warning). So, if you are leet enough to break through the enemies defenses, you can actually have a chance to take out some equipment and get out without having to worry about being spammed or telefragged every 2 seconds. When you are killed and need to respawn, you can choose your node. As you cycle through, you can see the waiting time, who else recently spawned there, and the current waiting line. And if you are killed among teammates, the Ranger class can revive your corpse before you go through the respawn line. This, and the sprawling size of the maps, encourages people to travel in groups, and gives you the opportunity to attone for the accidental teamkill. It also has the bonus side effect of weeding out stupid players that are too impatient to wait 20 seconds to respawn.

Finally, there is an individual energy (stamina) limit, which was probably the best thing about Savage, and it prevents the ridiculous "running, leaping, and dodging ALL THE TIME" theatrics that make UT2003 deathmatch so lame for us poor bastards that can't script and practice all day long. And the heavy armor can jet to those high to reach places (he's about as mobile as the Heavies in Tribes), provided he has energy. The only thing missing, really, is the adrenaline combos, the best thing about UT2003.

Upon further playing, there is one thing that might be worth bitching about, and that's sniping. It is VERY powerful in XMP, mostly because you can't ski or translocate, so you move slowly, and the zoom lens you get on the rifle is INSANE. It's fine when there are snipers on both teams taking each other out and fighting for positions. However, if you get stuck on a team where no one can or wants to do that, you're kinda screwed as soon as you leave your base. The only way you can cap is to have someone ferry you back in a tank. This is because they (fortunately) differentiate damage types, basically into physical and electrical. Physical weapons, like the sniper slugs, don't do shit against the tank. But the engineer's EMP grenades fuck 'er up big time.

Ahh...I think I'm in love. I can't wait to try the rest of the levels in the full version. It seems there's one in an asteroid field, that oughtta rock.

i've received positive feedback from enough people to move forward with a January 10th LAN party. watch the news page, i'll annouce when the event page goes up.

Posted by: justin Posted on: Wednesday December 10 2003 6:41pm
ok folks...next LAN. January 10th? late enough to not conflict with New Years, and early enough to predate schoolwork (where applicable). Talk to me. I'll start the machine moving again.

Posted by: justin Posted on: Wednesday December 10 2003 2:35pm
not as far as i can tell, but you can build walls.
walls with laser beams.
LASER BEAMS!

and jeep-like vehicle doubles as a meat-combine. Catch a pedestrian in the front blades, and he get's spit out these tubes in bite-sized chunks. Glorious!

Posted by: wish_for_whisky Posted on: Wednesday December 10 2003 11:04am
But...in this XMP can you build a strategicaly placed bridge in real-time, which if built properly can support the weight of your troops and equipment, to make a more calclulated attack on the enemy?

Now that would be a game feature, let me tell you!

Posted by: justin Posted on: Tuesday December 9 2003 11:48pm
ok, i'm thoroughly impressed. Unreal 2 XMP is quite possibly the most intelligent FPS game i've played yet. a bit surprising, given the Unreal franchise is known for Twitch First Think Later (tm).
You know, Crowscape, how we've always wanted limited team energy in Tribes? Well, that's how things work in XMP. If you only have one generator, you can't do the good shit (deploy turrets, force fields, etc). So, you need to go out and capture other power sources (through "hacking"). As your team energy rises (much like TA), new technology comes online, you can start using the advanced weaponry. Even the ability to capture artifacts (a good way to win matches) requires a certain level of technology (and therefore power). So, a lone hero player, no matter how 1337, can no longer own a match by capping alone. If a few mediocre players dedicate themselves to what is essentially resource gathering, they can nullify that hero player and prevent him from scoring (even if they can't actually kill him). I like the dynamic of this a lot, because to dominate you need every player on your team, even the n00bs. It means the game is fun for a wide spectrum of skill levels.

So you've got resources and technology, much like an RTS, so in a way this is Savage Done Right. You've got classes, deployables, vehicles, and capture-and-hold dynamics, all the best of games like Battlefield, Tribes, and Team Fortress. There are even a few unique twists: for example, the bases have many doors that can be locked to different teams via hacking. So, it's unlikely that you can run the same cap route twice, as the functioning of each base is dynamic.

I just can't rave enough about this game. ya'll gotta try it.

Posted by: justin Posted on: Tuesday December 9 2003 8:02pm
i guess i'm on it, unless someone else volunteers. I'll see what's up for the middle of January.

In the mean time, Download U2XMP, learn it, play it, and love it. It has most of the interesting gameplay possibilities in Tribes and Battlefield:1942, with a little Team Fortress, and it harnesses the smooth controls and graphics of Unreal tech. It r0><0rz or something like dat.

OK... So... When's the next Lan party. I'd kinda like something to look forward to. ;)

according to beyond unreal, UT2004's Mac version is going to come out MUCH sooner this time. And i think i'm going to check out that $30 Special Edition of Unreal 2, because XMP is very, promising. Especially since it's the only damn thing that's on time for the holidays.
