| Power is the ability to exert control over another person's mind. If disk space will help you to get others to buy your product, then it is power. | |

That's awesome! So, gaming...next LAN is May 27-28....right? Also, Civ 4 is pretty great. I think I've figured the game out. Won on the first few difficulties. Went to the "balanced" difficulty, got WTFPWNED by the Spanish horse archers. Unlike MOO, when the computer declares war, it actually means it. Rather than declare war and then do nothing for 100 turns, here the computer will stack a giant army just outside your range and then declare war. And sack ur mans in like 4 moves. Excellent! |

So I'm quite happy with this iPod Shuffle Kruger hooked me up with for my birthday/christmas, especially the following features that are above what I expected... 1) Seamless mixing high-quality .wav tunes and low-quality podcasts, and it automatically balances the levels on playback 2) Switch on back to disable "shuffle" for sequential playlist makes me wonder why you'd pay more for a nano with the same space 3) Dynamic data partitioning allow you to hide as much (or as little) space from iTunes and use it as a data drive I'm looking forward to dumping many hours of Japanese lessons on there and playing back in my car, on the plane, on the train, etc... |

I found Tycho's praise of the combat mechanics in the post to be peculiar, because that's exactly how I've found the Raid end-game in WoW to play out, with strategies of sequencing, timing spell interrupts, and managing melee stuns (both player-initiated and boss-initiated) to be way more important than numbers/button mashing. Yet he expressed no such enthusiasm for that...must have been the prerequisite of joining a giant guild filled with strangers who often speak Texan. As for JRPGs, it's easy to see why the stories come out like that. Based on sales, America has declared that Neon Genesis Evangelion is the pinnacle of Japanese storytelling...so when that's your measuring stick for narrative, it's no wonder that the games that are chosen for localization here are so effective at destroying brain cells. |

I was under the impression that the reason mac virii are rare is not so much that it's iron-clad secure by design, it's just irrelevant in the business world and so no one tries...same for Linux I would assume... Any wayz...it seems I'm most likely on the Nebuchadnezzer or DS9, and least likely on the Enterprise D or the Galactica. Which given my suspicion of big goverment and religious/cultural assimilation, I suppose makes sense, though the DS9 thing is a bit of a stretch. Maybe a Maquis ship... Well...it had to come to an end sooner or later. Pre-orders for the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire DVD (four different versions all released on the same day???? Not even StarWars and LOTR have that many!!) have pushed Firefly and Serenity out of the top ten list on Amazon.com. Together Firefly and Serenity spent 53 days on the top ten list. Firefly had two long streaks, the one that just ended (basically started with the release of Serenity on September 30th) after 143 days on the top ten, and the second that started when the set was first released in December of 2003 that lasted a whopping 389 days! Somebody has to be buying Firefly, somebody has to be watching this thing! Where are they? In other Firefly news, Kristin from Eonline reported that Nathan Fillion (Mal), Gina Torres (Zoe), and Summer Glau (River) were seen leaving the new CW television network's corporate headquarters --(For those who don't know, CW is a new network starting up this fall that combines the WB and UPN. I could make a combined racist and ageist joke here...but I won't. As for what CW stands for, my only hope is that it's not "Country Western"!). Joss Whedon has posted on www.whedonesque.com saying that he has not spoken to CW about doing a Firefly TV series again....but then again he had also dismissed rumors of a Universal Pictures Firefly-based movie....within a year we had Serenity). Now the question is...will CW pull a Paramount/B5 deal where they make a show called Dragonfly about cowboys in space (wasn't that the premise of Cowboy Bebop? Maybe that's why I love Firefly so) and a theatrical movie called Tranquility? Hmmmm...only the shadow knows..... |

in regards to the iPod, people are not complaining about the hardware, heck, it pretty much didnt even have competition until the creative zen. the iPods market dominace even has created another feature, standard interfaces!! the problem with iPod is iTunes, and most iPod owners would like the option to play rhapsody, yahoo, or napster music subscriptions on thier iPod. I think this is a good suit not because of the business ethics, but because of the technology ethics behind it, iPods use non standard DRM because they can, not because they should. If Apple was a hardware company they would have thought about it, but rather they make great software and sell music. |

Oh yeah. www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thefountain/ At least he's not doing Flicker. Here's crossing my fingers that he DOESN'T do Flicker. I read that book and man, while I could see Darren's style working for it, the movie would be gross (There's this one filmmaker in the book whose bag is just to make sick and gross film, or was it video? Anyway one of the works was called "Sad Sewer Babies" and I could see Darren doing too good a job on that) and the ending would need to be reworked. It builds to this shuddering climatic ending and then... "Oh, I think I'll write my memoirs." |

"Just imagine how well a cartoon defacing Coretta Scott King in the NY Times would go over right about now. Or, look at the list of abortion doctors who have been murdered in this country in the name of a religious taboo..." You're right, we did have race riots, and there are those that consider abortion murder, but those are 'internal issues'. Americans confronting other Americans and trying to change the system from within. What is happening today is a religon (and governments under the guise of religon) trying to dictate their mores and values to other soverine nations by FORCE, and that is so far beyond what has happened here. At least the riots in France were localized to imigrants to France and the French governement. This is far more insidious. Also, in our race riots I don't think every black person rioted either, just like here not every Muslim in the world is rioting right now. There is a representative population. In places like Iraq, there are always Anti-American riots, and the media drifts towards them, even though that is not the sentiment of the majority. However in this case the riots are getting to a point where things like the media are being driven out due to the ferocity of the tumult. They're not trying to make a point, they are hell bent on doing something... The other thing that kinda troubles me, is that anyone at any time can do what that guy who drew these things did. I could draw a picture right now, and put it on the Internet, or have it published, and in a week have the hate of millions focused on me. That's totally insane. B_W |

"I hate to sound stilted, but any religon that calls for killing or gaining retribution from foreigners because someone drew something in a foreign country is a little 'out there'." The thing to remember is that there are a lot of forces at work in the middle east besides religion. There's well over a billion Muslims in the world, and 99 % of them are not killing and rioting. Most Muslims in the targeted European countries have accepted the apologies given (or never asked for them because they respect freedom) and moved on without violence. So obviously there's something else going on here. "Iran and Syria have gone out of their way to inflame sentiments and to use this to their own purposes and the world ought to call them on it," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said at a joint news conference with Israel’s foreign minister. The remaining 1 % , the wackjobs that you see on your TeeVee, live under crushing theocracies that hate western Europeans for reasons that go way beyond Islam. The religion (and the cartoon) are just a convenient excuse to do what they want to do anyway. These people have no sense of humor because their government prohibits it. It's hard for us to get because we live under a government that (despite Bush's best efforts) is forced to uphold free speech and tolerance over any one religion. But that doesn't mean we're beyond violence. We just use different excuses. For example, we've had deadly race riots before and we could have them again. Just imagine how well a cartoon defacing Coretta Scott King in the NY Times would go over right about now. Or, look at the list of abortion doctors who have been murdered in this country in the name of a religious taboo... |

"Examples are more powerfull than actions of force, or words of will." Which is what I was saying in my last post, but that doesn't work, as per my example. I'm sorry to harp on this issue, but it's just so very strange to me. I mean, I see worse stuff about things I care about every day. I don't know if any of you have seen these images, but they aren't anything to riot over, whether you beleive drawings of Muhamid should be drawn or not. I hate to sound stilted, but any religon that calls for killing or gaining retribution from foreigners because someone drew something in a foreign country is a little 'out there'. What happened to Islam being a loving religion full of temperance and acceptance? I remember hearing that over and over for the past five years... I mean, I don't want to sound like a panzy here, but there are steps to be made before taking hostile action. After 9-11 were there mobs of people burning down embassy's and threatining to destroy Muslims? (perhaps there might have been some ralleys, but nothing hostile or violent) Couldn't we have a little discussion before taking it to the streets? I am sure this guy who drew this stuff didn't realize that even a nice drawing of Muhamid is offensive. Ask for an apology, and if he posts more pictures or is insensitive, boycot the paper. Protest peacefully. Perhaps don't call for countries to fall or people to be killed. (on day 1) Am I out of wack here? B_W |

Space Expert Says Yes - By Thinking Nuclear" Story: www.physorg.com/news10605.html Digg Comment Link: digg.com/technology/Could_NASA_Get_To_Pluto_Faster_Space_Expert_Says_Yes_-_By_Thinking_Nuclear Paul A. Czysz, a 30-year veteran of the industry, continuing consultant to the U.S. military and professor emeritus of aerospace engineering at St. Louis University, thinks NASA can curb the travel time to the outer planets from nearly a decade to a matter of weeks - something he considers critical for the human exploration of the solar system. What's required, he said, is a renewed commitment to nuclear propulsion. So... Now we sit back and wait for Peter to disect this! -A |

the catholic church had its crusades, and its own unique murderous past national religions in germany were convinced to accept the genocide that was going on durring WWII heck the roman guards that put Jesus on the cross ended up being involved in the creations of the catholic church, maybe that moment changed who they were? it is not my place to judge Gods plan, but all of us act in ways were are not obviously a benifit to humanity, but i am sure things will work themselves out they always do in the long run. I just dont beleive that people of faith act out of fear, however people of fear obviously react to fear. Religion and a beleif in God should never be the result of one's fear of the afterlife. It should be a choice, a place in your heart that turns you from the moment and instead allows you the perspective of eternity. I think our afterlife is the one we create now, our eternity is the choices we make now, it is the future that we hope to create, with the choices of today. Example: If you thnk people should be friendlier, then befriend people, oddly enough they usually befriend you back. Example: If you think the Earth should be cleaner, the start with yourself, and pick up your own trash. Example: If you think people should be healthier, then take care of yourself. Examples are more powerfull than actions of force, or words of will. |

I think this is a great example of how things are so out of whack in this whole Muslim cartoon issue: from an AP news post: "Writer Salman Rushdie was forced into hiding for a decade because of a fatwa, or religious edict, imposed on him for publishing "The Satanic Verses." Though it was equally iconoclastic, there was no such response when Dan Brown published "The Da Vinci Code," seen by many as offensive to the Catholic church." I know so many people who read Da Vinci Code, and the concepts put forth in that text would be considered blasphemous to many Christian faiths, but I don't see anyone burning down anything or rioting over it. Heck, a great number of Christians see it for what it is, and even enjoy it. Interesting. B_W |

CS, Hmmm... NS, That's the best thing I have heard all day. I'm gonna have to think about all this over a nice tall glass of space water...or heavy water...but not to exceed 1/3 of my body weight...because then I would die. B_W |

It seems kind of counter-productive to protest the portrayal of Muslims as militant lunatics by acting like militant lunatics...in the name of Islam..... My head hurts. |

| From what I've heard about Munich, if you want to like it or hate it, you'll find something. There is a streak of moral equivalency that runs through it, while at the same time there is a message for the current war that if we must be determined and do what is necessary to win. Spielberg, I believe, was actually for the war in Iraq, and I haven't heard anything that said he has since changed his position, so I would guess his intent was the latter message over the former. But, again, this is just from what I've heard. | |

Wow. This blows my mind. Yeah, these drawings were pretty insensitive, but this kind of reaction is unacceptable. Yeah, I am offended when someone draws a duragatory picture of Jesus, but here in the good ole USA you can do that and not be kidnapped or killed. I kinda like it that way. news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060202/ap_on_re_mi_ea/prophet_drawings B_W |

"best tear jerking story telling the tale of antisemetic behaviour in the 1976 olympics" I haven't seen munich, but isn't it less about what happened at the olympics, (and the antisemitism that prompted the intial attack) and more about killing the $uck out of those olympic assasins? From what I have heard, it paints quite a complex picture, making you want to root for these retribution killings. Or not...perhaps it paints just as disgusting of a picture of those killings as it did the olympic killings. I mean, it really has little to do with antisemitism, and more about how killing leads to more killing. Intrigue have you seen it? B_W |

i am usually excited about the oscars, but this years nod has left me with little to root for, i might find myself just as interested in the oscars as i am in the super bowl this year. from what i can see this is a really political year for the oscars we have these best pictures to vote for: best gay cowboy couple, awe arnt they cute best racist couple, awe arnt they cute best captian obvious news team that points out that propoganda has no real truth to it best tear jerking story telling the tale of antisemetic behaviour in the 1976 olympics best morally ambivalent author telling a tale of how a prosecuted murder is misunderstood, and isnt to be blamed for his own actions there is nothing positive about this years oscars like there was in prior years that asked the question "where is all of the rum?" i would have much rather seen these as best picture: batman returns memoirs of a geisha (well maybe i still need to see it) sin city king kong the 40 year old virgin/ wedding crashers ok, so that was the best i could come up with after looking over the list of movies released this year, gosh cinema did suck this year. Its a good thing many of the films released just before years end so that they did not have much to compete with. |

Define "good television": Dr. Porter using the term "cornhole" on MUTV! Brilliant! |

I forget who it was, but Fox New's Hollywood reporter asked one of the actors in attendence if Brokeback Mountain was... trying to find the right term 'cause I forget... not in line with Middle America's values. Whoever it was made an remarkably inciteful response, but then failed to draw the proper conclusion from it. He said that Middle America probably doesn't care that there are gays in Brokeback Mountain, and so they will probably surprise many commentators and go see it. First, yeah, most Americans don't care that there are gays in Brokeback Mountain, but you see, that actually means that they won't go to see it, because the only reason to see Brokeback Mountain is if you care that there are gays in the movie. I mean, I'm sure the movie is well done with a wonderful story, dialog, acting, and cinematography... but I just don't care. In other news, I have Civ IV. |

In darko they were playing characters that were underage, that's all I know. No 'tertiary texts' here! (unless we get Porter in on this action...that would be sweet.) B_W |

I was trying to draw a humorous connection between the Jake Gyllenhaal nomination for Brokeback, and his earlier work on a film that was actually challenging and genre-bending, as opposed to politically-correct Hollywood challenging, yet would never get any recognition. "He's gay AND he's a cowboy! Shocking! They'll never see that one coming!" He's my age, BTW. |

Aren't they all underage in Donnie Darko? Anyway... I really enjoyed picking in Peter's Picking contest in recient years, but this year I am having some trouble with it. I don't know, perhaps this is revisionist on my part, but isn't the academy supposed to pick movies it thinks are good? The 'best' in each category? I know this has been going on for sometime, but this whole 'brokeback mountain' thing is kinda stretchin it. I mean, i'm sure it's a fine film, and good for those people who made it, but I highly doubt that's a representation of the 'best' that hollywood has put out in the last year. The academy just likes to shove the $hit that they think will kick america's a$$ and laugh it off. 'America is full of anti-gay bigots, so let's ram this down their throat and nominate it a bunch of times...that'll show um!' Yeah, and they wonder why people aren't coming out to the box office any more. I'm sorry, i'm not going to pay $10 for the privalege of seeing it. Meawhile after the golden globes, brokeback's ticket sales 'leap' up 40 % , which equals 6.6 million, while at the same time Underworld get's a 'meger' 26 million. Perhaps I am just out of touch. As I said, I'm glad they made it, and I am sure it is great, but definitly not the 'best' of any category. So, I will probably pick again in Peter's picking contest, but I won't like it. Peter, and anyone else, I am watching the oscars at my place on the HD. If you're down your welcome to join in. B_W |
