Goodbye CompUSA, I will miss the bloated prices, the incompetant staff (that wouldn't know a 'computer' if one kicked and at the same time bit them in the ass), and the pointlessly long lines at the holdiaze.

What say we defuse this "bomb" a little?

Did I say it was impossible?

Was the shoe bomb successful?

Would this device in Phoenix have made a difference in any case?

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Saturday February 24 2007 5:32pm
Yup, there have been absolutely no instances of people putting bombs in their clothing. None. Not at all. Nope, no stories of someone trying to detonate their shoes, for instance...

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Saturday February 24 2007 1:18pm
Absolutely! It's a lot easier to put bomb in your suitcase than in your pants. You can also check them as opposed to carrying them. Hence, a reasonable and less invasive security precaution. Luggage X-Rays are also mandatory, which means they actually have a shot at being effective, unlike this joke.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Friday February 23 2007 11:01pm
Just like those x-ray machines that have been all over the place in airports for decades. You know, because bags are such a grave threat to national security.

Intrigue, I would love to watch that episode of Las Vegas (since Whedonesque didn't post that Morena Baccarin would be on it until after the episode aired). Do you have your DVR hooked up to a burner? or can you hold onto it until next Monday?

I like it that it makes headlines that a mall shooter didn't own videogames:

With all the serious banter going on in the emails, I figured I would post something that has nothing to do with the issue but is political in nature (AND very humorous). This is not a comment on the current issue, just something I found that will hopefully lighten your day!

I don't know if anyone else is playing attention, but I'm starting to itch bad for some more UT. UT2007 has been pushed back and renamed UT3, but they seem to be putting some cool new stuff in it.

I'm happy to see them paying attention to people who, like me, would sometimes rather just play decent bots than racist unemployed teenagers on the internet.

B_W, read the rest of the transcript... It was meant to be a humorous gesture of indignation (a joke)! George is well aware that ESB is viewed as the favorite movie of the six (it's also the one that he spent the longest time getting the story right). Those who know the behind the scenes story of Empire know that Empire actually went through several scripts (kind of like the current Indiana Jones IV project). George worked very hard getting his story across to various writers before Lawrence Kasdan succeeded in telegraphing Lucas' thoughts and story into a worthwhile script (oh..and for those of you who claim that it was all Lawrence Kasdan that made ESB so great, I have one word for you: "Dreamcatcher"). Look closely at the credits and you will see that a second writer, Leigh Brackett, is given a writing credit even though less than 1% of her script made its way into the movie. Leigh Brackett was one of the earlier writers whose script George rejected. She died of cancer shortly after finishing that script and George honored her contribution (however small) by giving her a writing credit. In some small way, George was driving people to death in order to get Empire right...so give the guy a break and realize that he likes to poke fun just as much as anyone else!

Peter, this one's all for you. You can't possibly tell me that Lucas has any good sense. He's out of his mind and he's always been.

NS, this one's for you because of Mira Furlan (and also for any fans of LOST):
http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20010504,00.html

Entertainment Weekly talks to Damon Lindelof (Co-Creator) and Carlton Cuse (Executive Producer)about LOST while answering fan questions (actually very revealing answers to those of you who follow the show SPOILERS!). The last question asked was, "Is there a mystery you'll never solve?" and Cuse replies, "honestly, we're never going to tell you why the French lady (played by MIRA FURLAN) has a Yugoslavian accent."

"Sony Rep calls Wii and impulse buy"

First, how can that be true? It's not like you can walk into Walgreens and trip over a stack of Wii (Wiis?). "Oh, this looks neato, I'll take 2!" You kinda have to be on a mission from god to get one.

Second, if this were true (and it probably will be true in 6 months after the first price drop), how is that a bad thing?

--- ENGAGING RANT MODE---

It's time I chimed in on the recent science postings by B_W. First of all, an AIDS cure is so big that there is no way in heck that anyone smart enough to develop it would allow the goverment to make the announcement and still the credit for themselves. This reminds me in many ways of when Russia claimed they developed Cold Fusion. They would have been better off claiming that they invented the flying car and phasers rather than an AIDS cure.

As for the SuperBowl ads article, the conclusions are a load of horse hockey. fMRI can only tell you so much, the rest is speculation. fMRI can tell you what regions of the brain receive increased blood flow (highly correlated with the brain using those particular areas). I have no problems with the methods, it's the conclusions that I found suspect. First of all, the only thing you can say is that while viewing the ad, a particular brain area often associated with a particular emotion is lit up. Just because the ventromedial amygdala, a region that is associated with anxiety lights up, doesn't mean that the person is anxious. Worse yet, they compound the faulty conclusions by trying to extend their findings to the message of a commercial! Just because someone gets anxious (and remember, it's not 100% sure that the person is anxious) during a commercial about a frelling scutter that loses its job doesn't mean that they are nervous about the economic welfare of the country! What if these were all Bears or Colts fans who really wanted to get back to the game? That would be enough to provoke anxiety! What if they all secretly sympathized with the robot and were worried that the commercial would end on a sad note for the poor robot? That would be anxiety!

---- END RANT MODE --------

I knew the Superbowl (TM) ads balked this year, but science knows for sure:

It's a 'no brainer' ha! I liked the honda ad the best, that 'got less response than looking at the blank screen'. Yeah.

Adam,
Well, yeah. She's talking about Napster, right as it was going on. Makes sense. Actually, it makes more sense, becuase right now there isn't a commonly used illegal system like Napster.

So. I'm not going to be signing with a big lable any time soon. I know everyone is shocked.
