don't know what they're using to generate content in Doom3, but I'll throw out a few 3ds bits out there as requested. the biggest confusion seems to be around normal mapping. as I understand it, this isn't really a texture-storage thing, it's a rendering trick to approximate extra geometry without so much processing overhead. in the tools i use, a "normal" is a vertex with an orientation. it "looks" in a certain direction. with modern GPUs you can use this to make something that is not a curved look more curved, for example. if two normals have orientations 30 degrees apart, and you wanted to render a curve filling in between, normal mapping can be used to interpolate the extra data. combine a bunch of normals with useful orientations, and you have a "map" that can be rendered as a shape, without defining polygons and doing all that ugly triangulation math, storing vertices, etc. kinda like vector math, with textures. What new games are doing is taking it a step further, using normal mapping to simulate points and extrusions for specular highlights, without the extra geometry or the use of a specular "texture". how this is different from NURBS and other CV-point structures (the tech used to make Quake III so efficent my 8-meg Voodoo card could run it, allows Rhino to make spheres, etc), that's what i don't really get. as for regular texture components, having 3 textures per surface is not new, and certainly not impressive. a Parhelia card was designed to render 4, years ago. a modern Quadro card / DCC app does far more. in fact, Unreal Engine 2.x tech uses at least 3 (diffusion or "color" map, a second "detail texture" to define the material, and a bump map, which they seem to cheat with to also define specularity). So, you separate bump and specular properly and you've got 4, and that's all you really need. if you want to get 1337, you throw in a reflection map and projectors, both of which UT2k3 approximated ages ago. the reflections could be greatly improved, because right now they are static in Unreal. But i haven't seen any dynamic reflection maps in Doom 3 screenshots either. so, my point here i guess is that Doom 3 can't really use "multiple textures" as an excuse to demand more memory, because there's nothing new there. and in my experience, UT2k4 doesn't need 128mb, if runs fine on 64 if you lose anisotropic filtering. so we're back to the original assumption that the textures are simply "bigger". that's logical, but completely unnecessary. for example, why do you need a 512x512 texture on your rocket launcher? you will never see them, due to the limitations of monitor technology for the forseeable future. that rocket launcher will probably occupy less than 256x256 of actual rendered real estate. you'd only need textures that big on large objects that fill your entire screen, such as big walls and terrain. how many different types of terrain do you really see in a single level? I suspect Tribes 2 had terrain textures of 1k, if not bigger, plus a detail channel. UT2K4 textures, in general, are detailed enough to max out reasonable screen resolutions. The only time they break down is when you are zooming in through a sniper rifle or something. the only time i've experienced swapping lag on my two-year-old rig is when changing objectives or vehicles on a really big Assault map. I'm sure if I had modern equipment, that would not happen. also, I wonder why Carmack isn't allowing for non-square texture optimizations? that limitation is already lifted on a variety of cards, such as the Quadro 3000, and it will be prevalent long before 512 megs of vram is, and probably cheaper, too. but whatever his reasons, and I'm sure he has good ones (seeing as he is considered the leading mind in this field), i'm with the Gameplay argument anyway, and i'm highly doubtful that id can deliver that (or worthwhile textures, for that matter). their record has not been stellar for many years. UT gives me *fun*, it gives me more than just deathmatch, it gives me free mods and expansion packs in massive quantities, and i don't need a new computer to enjoy it. case closed. here's a dry read on rendering materials, etc. www.cs.bris.ac.uk/Teaching/Resources/COMSM2100/sampleinterims/low1.pdf |

ARRGHH! I should really get into the habit of spell checking these things before I send them. involoved = involved, not to mention what ever else I might of typoed or just misspelled. Justin, I think I have an idea for V2.0 ;) |

Oh! That's probably it! Alright: Normal, I'm guessing, would be the texture that you apply to the wall in the map editor. Diffuse would be the luminence value specific to that surface which was generated when the editor "lit" the level. So your Normal would be the largest file size; as it would be 24-bit or 32-bit color. Your Diffuse would be grayscale, but there would be one texture per surface. Together, these things are nothing new. Specular would probably also be grayscale (although you never know, they might throw in some neat colored specularity), but Specular would probably be less prevelent than Normal, and again, there are current games with far lower system requirements that handle all this brilliantly. So that must mean the texture files themselves are just huge. In the article, you have them talking about how by simply compressing textures bigger than 512X512 that the video memory requirement halves. This makes sense as words like "cinematic" have been used to describe the in-game graphics, for which you would need damn good textures more so than high polycounts. |

Ahh. A case that I knew, I just didn't know that I knew. I've done all that stuff before just with a single color is all, no textures involoved. Although, now that I can apply that knowlege to this, it is emmissive that will create a glowing console. I know this from some phun I was having from my solar system game. :) Ambient is just general, basic light. Bones to Spock about the time jump back to their own time: He means he trusts your guesses more than other peoples sure things. And Spock got em' back just momemnts after they left their time and the day was saved by Kirk and his piece! Thanks to Spock's great guess. |

I'll take the Spock thing as a complement as I'm fuzzy on my Voyage Home recolection. With the texture types: Your diffuse is what you've been using since Quake. Just a simple image tossed on to a surface whose luminence is dictated by light sources. Easy. Your specular seems to be a new thing in the past year or two, where your objects seem to shine in the light, making them look like they are covered in plastic wrap or something. My addiction at the last LAN party, Knights of the Old Republic, seemed to use these textures all over the place. As for normal, beats the hell out of me. Usually your third type would be a bump map. There's also ambient, which you'd use if you wanted to create a glowing console in a dark room (although normally in games you'd just tell the engine not to light objects that you wanted "lit", if that makes any sense). |

I sincerely doubt that any ram swapping is going on anywhere, unless a level change is going on. All textures that one wants to use on a level must be on board the video card in order for it to do it's job properly. Even in the case of the special texture. Else you would start ram swapping and the performence would take a big ole hit (I have some ideas involving threading and prediction algorithems that may be worth exploring but I'm skeptical about their effectiveness.) I'm thinking about my LIMITED UT2k4 experience and when I do I seem to think that a lot of texture recycleing is going on. I.E. the ground. Plus, the size of the texture matters. Save a plain white 512 x 512 32-bit bitmap and compare that save to a 64 x 64 32-bit bitmap (or any 2 power sized bitmap inbetween). So through texture recycleing and smaller bitmaps, it is possiable to make 128 Megs of on board ram be okay. Crow, you're guess is right up there with Spock's guess in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. I'm not 100% sure about the specular, normal and diffuse textures. I know what these terms are when it realtes to lighting, but I have yet to use them with textureing. Perhaps Justin and his 3DS experience can be of assitence here. |

| If I had to guess I'd say that it's A) due to the fact that you have three texture maps per surface B) in levels with many many surfaces while C) all the textures are uncompressed. Unfortunately I've been out of the gaming loop for so long that the latest games I own were made when lens flares were considered a big deal, so I have no clue who these requirements match up with other contemporary games. | |

Greetings, OK DBBQC, I get your point. But, if that is the case, why does DOOM3 get the distinction of having this, when every other game out there doesn't even require a 128mb card to run at full quality? There must be some 'ram swapping' going on somewhere. Also, for you're gun example that makes sence, you could pull that gun out at any time. But let's say there is a special texture in a room that you are nowhere near, or an enemy that you have awhile yet to face, do those textures all need to be loaded up front as well? I think Carmac or Carmex whatever his name is, is getting L-A-Z-Y. But that's just me. Good discussion, and great arguements. DBBQ, perhaps you could read the aricle on toms, and see if you can tell me a little more about what they are doing? www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20040727_052008.html Later Gs, Big_Whisky |

I'd have to learn more about the textures before I started to complain about the card. After all, it is fully possible that the images for the game could hit 512megs uncompressed, even if we're just talking about a single level here. One of the last things one would want to do is load textures in the middle of the game from someplace off the video card cause then you have two scenarios: A) The texture is on the hard disk and has to be loaded yet then sent off to the video card. Needless to say, ouch. Still, this situation is likely, let's say you have a weapon. That weapon has a texture and you have ammo for this gun in the beginning of a level but you blow it right away. However, you do not get more ammo for this gun, and thus don't pull up the gun again until the end of a level. In this time, the texture that was in memory has been replaced by something else. In this instance perhaps another texture. In which case the problem I'm about to finish describing would have already taken place. Well, with the texture now gone from memory, it has to be re-loaded from the hard disk. Imagine getting on hot gaming action and suddenly having to wait for the texture to load. Would give you time to pickup, sip, and place back one's orange mocha frappachino though in game. B) The texture is in main memory and needs to be sent to the video card. The latter isn't as bad but still, even if you have a 1Ghz bus that transfer is still going to impact performence. After all, with out the texture on board, the video card can't render the screen for you. So here you may only be able to pickup your orange mocha frappachino before the game goes again but still, off loading the textures from your video card remains a bad idea. As such, I agree that compressing them for display on less than 512Meg video cards is all right. As for the comments on 2k4 the dude, or dudette, is an idiot. Simply: funfactor counts. |

Greetings all, Alright, toms has released the Doom 3 technical specifications, and they are sky high! In fact, to play doom 3 at the highest settings, you need a video card that currently DOES NOT EXIST! ;) Moreover, they seem to base the quality of the game, not on the quality of the computer or the speed of the video card, or even the speed of the video card memory, but rather the SIZE of the video card memory. Here's the breakdown: Quality-- Ultra - 512mb (not yet in production [on a mass scale, I think one workstation card might have that much) High - 256mb Medium - 128mb Low - 64mb Now, some who wish to remain nameless, (I believe due to fear) think think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread, because it pushes hardware manufacturers to 'raise the bar'. Although I am all for 'raising the bar', I am not a big fan of this Doom 3 execution. From what I have learned from 'Toms' they are just dumping all of their textures into the video card memory and leaving them there whether you need them or not. If you don't have enough memory, tough, they will just compress the textures and lower the quality. No quarter has been given to concepts like trying to load and unload those textures as needed, possibly using the power of today's computers or the speed of memory on certain video cards. So, get ready to not only be dissapointed with Doom 3, but also to see a flood of subpar 512mb video cards. It just keeps getting better and better. Oh and this 'unknown source' who wants to remain nameless also says that he is dissapointed with Unreal 2k4 and the entire Unreal series, because all it does is 'push polys'. (and run on a wide variety of computers, making the game experience enjoyable to all, not just the elite) Gamers of the world rise up, you have nothing to lose but you're chains, (and possbly ID), and the world of efficent, well though out, and cleverly executed games to gain! But enough of this old man's ranting. What do ya'll think? Big_Whisky |

I applied for a crappy little Customer Service Job. I was told I was overqualified and they would not hire me for it. They did get me in touch with some people though who may be able to help me get a tech job and the dood I talked to said I should be employable in my career with what I've got. So that's good news. I also got the GUI for the Server designed for my game. It's a lot more annoying doing it in C than just dragging and dropping stuff on the form in Visual Studio .NET. BUT I don't have Visual Studio .NET so I code. I just NEED to get employed so I can build my next PC. Must beta test my networking code before the game debuts at a LAN Party. |

I'm assuming we're talking iTunes here right? I think you have to attack it from the menu. Highight the track you wish to rip, and in one of the dropdown menus it says something like "convert track to (insert your chosen format here.)" I also think it might be possible to just go into the CD in the finder and pull the cd track to the desktop to get an AIFF. I think I did that and it worked. Give er' a go. OH! And on my prior thought, does anyone else have no idea just what the hell they're supposed to be working toward acheiveing? OH! And on my other prior thought, I'd put $100 on Crow to beat Ken. |

Insert one end of the paper clip exactly 21/79ths of an inch into the hole (any less and it won't work, any more and you'll activate your Mac's self destruct). There are three touch sensitive pads inside (hard to find, they are expertly blended into the walls of the hole); one to the south, one to the north east, and one to the north west. Tap the end of paper clip once north east, three times south, two north east, and five north west. Congratulations! You have just unchecked all of the boxes. Wasn't that easy? Nothing left to accomplish? How sad. Good news for LAN attendees: Garage parking has been secured for everyone. Bad news, the Moonbase Commander demo is timed, so unless everyone buys it there won't be much of that. Shame really, it's the perfect mix of Worms/Scorch gameplay with RTS elements. I'll show it off a bit on the projector and maybe we can track it down for the next one (it runs about $5-$10 per copy these days). |

alrighty folks, your chances of having your links fucked up just went down. Also, I posted a schedule on the event page for the current gathering. speak up if I forgot anything. What I would like to discuss a bit before the event: food plans. A good deal of time was wasted on indecision for this subject during the last gathering. So my question is...do we want to plan a few meals out in the neighborhood or beyond? Or does someone besides CrowScape want to volunteer some in-house culinary delights? Should we just order pizza, "all day every day"? Should we choose to make a few meal runs, I have obtained the "Merchant Directory" for the Third Ward, and I see some very viable candidates here. So we just need to decide what we want. Should we dress down and hit a fish fry pub? Dress up and hit the local sushi bar? Go get drunk on margaritas? Steak and microbrews at the Ale House or Wicked Hop? My suggestions are hinted at on the schedule, and they're quite predictable. There's a bakery with a breakfast menu down the road, which might be reminiscent of Blue Dog, which worked well in the past. At night, my brain patterns mimick those of the mighty Dopefish, to draw a gaming parallel from antiquity. Instead of "Swim, Swim, Hungry...repeat", I travel along the lines of "Margarita, Margarita, Goth Club...repeat". This is not exactly revelatory, so I'm open to suggestions. The concept of Sobelman's Burgers of Death seemed popular last time, we just need to think of it on Saturday and not Sunday (when they are closed). We are also much closer to that establishment now, which reduces the potential gaming time wasted. So if you would, gentlemen, gather 'round and discuss. |

can't say I've noticed any. they probably rely on the steady stream of MIAD students. On the topic of GOLD, there's a persistent rumor floating around that a little project called Doom 3 has gone GOLD. Doesn't really affect the current gathering; more in the interest of accuracy. Man, making digital video move around a Windows desktop and still stay in sync with separate audio files...bummer. It also likes to leave little black boxes everywhere that don't refresh. ;P |

indeed. The friday and saturday of the LAN are also "Gallery Nights and Days", and my new 'hood happens to have the largest concentration of art galleries in the state. if one is looking for an opportunity to rescue someone who likes art from the perils of Green Bay / Family, it might be something to keep in mind, and give one hope. Might be a good breather from the gaming, too. Me, I enjoy the gaming as a good breather from everything, so that's not really necessary. I got a few e-mail responses recently, so attendance should be healthy despite the move. Might need an update from CrowScape, though. That is, if he survives the battle. I hope to put a tentative schedule up tonight. |

Greetings all, DBBQC, Fear not young man! A gathering there will be, at the appropriate time. Media will be shown, and joy will be distributed through out the land. What form that will take, and what themes it will promote at this time has not been revealed to myself by the 'powers that be', so keep you're eyes open and your feet firmly planted on the ground. This time there will be a media submission date, (that has been revealed to me from above) and a format sumission process, but that is neither here nor their at this time) Now, back to the games. New? Hot? In my face? Off the hook? On the hook but off the chain? Or, should I just bring a very bright light and we can do finger puppets? Later Gs, D.R. |

Thanks guys for the DV-Cleaner tape info. It worked like a charm. Gee, there's been a lot of documentries this year. Super Size Me. Farenheight 9/11. Micheal Moore Hates America. Noticing, or at least thinking that was true for a quarter of a second, I've decided to throw my hat into the ring for, I trust I'm not being presumptious here, JK 2004! (I think there were rumors that last year would be the last and all I can say to that is SAY IT AIN'T SO! I still have to win my own People's Depth Charge not to mention earn redemption for last year!) I've begun documenting the software development of my game and already I have some footage that is [insert a Big_Whisky HOT here]! I'm also aiming to at least have a trailer for the game done in time. We shall see though. It may be possible for a beta to exist. Getting this networking thing figured out will be tons of phun. Right now I'm just aiming for a lan so I'll be using UDP for that but I will wish to add internet play too and that will require TCP. Version 1.0 will be UDP as currently this game is being designed with lan parties in mind. In for instance, Justin your dreaded Lan Party Fragmentation problem IS being addressed in my game cause I agree, it's a big deal, and it's being done in a way that I think is better than Gunbounds'. Can I get a w00t w00t for that? If there is to be no JK 2004 maybe just a software release party instead. I'll be aiming for the same day as it does not look like I'll be employed anytime soon so that date should work. Still, as with Duke Nukem' Forever and The Pulgari Trap this date should be considered tentative at best. Well, back to playing developer, developer, devloper, developer. |

betwixt now and then, I intend to try out that Moonbase Commander shit, as well as a few new games for UT2004, such as Alien Swarm. And of course, I would recommend far more AvP2. Specifically for CrowScape, and for anyone else interested in the elusive mayfly known as "web design that doesn't suck", check out http://www.bungie.net/Games/Halo2/ if you haven't already. I particularly enjoy the way the lower-right mechanism travels up a track when you resize your window vertically, and the persistent menu that doesn't seem to rely on frames or Flash, yet works on Mozilla for Mac. Exhilarating! |

First, Let's talk about some gaming, eh? Eh? There is this 'Lan Event' [as they call it] that is about to happen. (well, these things don't just happen, they really just happen) Anyway, what hot new games shall we play? How is action UT coming along? Anything new or hot out there, or about to be out there? Anything going GOLD? GOLD? Jim, Here are some new tactics: 1. Spiders: attack with HAIRSPRAY. Very effective...and fun. 2. Ninja Hummingbirds: Fill their sugar water recepticles with some BIG_WHISKY brand whiksy. Yeah, that should take the spring out of their wings. So, yeah, yeah, oh yeah! Big_Whisky |

| Greetings from NC, where the only thing to do is kill large insects and watch Neck Car! I swear all I've been doing since coming down here is pest control. I constantly must thwart the nefarious designs of the local spider population to completely incase this abode in a gigantic cocoon. How the hell the other insects manage to avoid capture by these industrious arachnids I have no clue. In addition I must be on gaurd against a family of attack ninja humming birds. Well, I hope I survive! | |

| Dream BBQ, the TechTV situation is quite unfortunate. Perhaps they felt the market is more suitable for that genre of entertainment. Personally, I think that stinks since I always loved watching TechTV at my parents' house. | |

ATTN MEDIA GUYS! My parents miniDV recorder tonight decited to show some horizontal bars on the screen during record and playback (either garbage or the previous shot appears interlaced with black). What do you think the chances are that the problem is due to something silly like dirty heads? |

I'm having issues getting posts to show up... I was able to just hit "reload", now I have to open "Query" in a new window... Can it be changed so that "post" opens in the same window and forces the board to refesh (maybe a suggestion for v 2.0) -A |
