For anyone interested, Japanese 1, I will be taking it agian as I need more practice with the alphabet. Many of the students currently in Japanese 1 have taken it before.

It is $175 and I have all of the course materials, we can make copies where needed to keep costs down.

CJSOS,
Sorry to say, I would love to come out and celebrate your 28-3, but Steven Q will be celebrating his 28-1 on the same evening. Down at a place downtown at 9:30. You would be welcome there for a bit, to double the fun as they say.

The Chinese "EAST" reactor seems to be a scaled down version of ITER. With whatever advances they've made, it's clear it's still just a Tokamak. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EAST
An important thing to note is that the Chinese aren’t somehow making more progress in fusion than the rest of the world; they're also going nowhere but at 1/20 the cost.

If you guys are interested, I'm having a little get together on Saturday in West Bend to celebrate my 28-3. My folks have a cottage on a lake so there will be swimming, boating, and other aquatic activities in addition to any lawn games like bocce, croquet, or playing "Jackass" with my grandparent's golf cart. Let me know if anyone wants to come out. It's about a 45 minute drive from Milwaukee.

Nearscape,
Here's a bit of info from the San Diego ComicCon JMS panel that I thought you would like: (paraphrased)
"Every 6 months, I get together with WB to discuss what to do something with B5. The DVD sales have raised over 500 million in revenue. Now, I produced B5s 110 episodes at about 90 million dollars. Somehow, B5 is still 50 million in the red. Every time I mention that to WB they say We made a good deal, huh? Anyway, they asked if I wanted to do a feature film but I declined mainly because I can't yet picture structuring a B5 movie as long as [Andreas Katsulas] and [Richard Biggs] insist on staying dead. Maybe in a year or two I'll be able to but right now I can't do something big and those two roles will NOT be recast.

So I thought about it, and I suggested a bunch of short films. Little mini-movies or an anthology show set in the Babylon 5 universe. I pick a character and develop an hour-long story around that character. Stories that I wanted to tell during the B5 series but never had the chance to develop. They said, Okay. I said I wanted complete creative control. Do not change my words that I write, and I want that in writing. They said, Okay. And I want to direct. They said, Okay.

This project was green lit less than two weeks ago. Its going to happen. Production starts in September in Vancouver, Canada. Post-production will occur from October to February with a release of the first three anthologies in the second quarter of 2007."

As far as the AMD and ATI thing, Kruger did you read the article? AMD is assuming a lot of debt and their stock has fallen. Most of the analysts say this is a do or die move for AMD. And if I was nVidia, I dont think I would be as friendly with AMD now that they own the direct competition. Right now you can't say this was a good or bad move. This one will have to play out.

http://www.vendetta-online.com/

I'm really enjoying this Vendetta Online game. The dynamic economy is very refreshing. Neglected stations eventually run out of stuff and start paying high prices, which keeps the "hot spots" moving around the galaxy in an unpredictable manner. The desirability of items isn't "hard coded" like a game like WoW, where a "rare loot" will always be valuable no matter how heavily it is farmed. Sometimes if you are in the right place and you pay attention, common ores that are easy for a low-level player to obtain can become valuable. Once players start flocking to a profitable market, then the pirates show up too, encouraging you to always stay ahead of the routine. Heavily -mined asteroids start to heat up and give diminishing returns, ensuring that scan-and-survey explorers are always in demand.

Character progression is very flexible. Instead of simply a "class and level" system, there are 5 liscense areas which you can improve in any order you like, allowing you to specialize and re-specialize as you go. Purchasing new ships is surprisingly affordable, making it easy to build up a fleet of different designs for different missions. I just started and I've already got 3 very different ships, which I routinely swap out depending on the mission.

The combat is the most fun I've ever seen in an MMO, playing pretty much like X-Wing/TIE fighter but with custom ships. If you want, you can even slide around B5-style, with more realistic physics, although for gameplay you are still subject to an artificial maximum speed, but I can live with that. And finally, there is very little in the way of "transit penalties". All you need to do is get safely away from large objects (in any direction you want), save up 25% of your energy, and then sector-warping is instant.

AMD & ATI sitting in a tree kiss intel goodbye

this is a great move by AMD assuming nVidia is still on thier side. AMD has been in the works to leverage hypertransport as an asymetrical bus technology to compete with intels limited pci express. Hypertransport is much faster(pciex16 maxes out at 16GB/s and Hypertransport maxes out at 22.4GB/s). HyperTransport is also a completely hardware solution, whereas PCIexpress requires the OS to implement some of its features. The idea is to create a stronger marrige between the CPU and the GPU, the rummors have it that AMD might release a CPU processor that has as many as 48 pipelines with in a year or two, as a result of this merger, and so buying more CPUs will also increase your processing power, this is great news for vista, as with each new processor, your graphics performance is garenteed to scale. HyperTransport 3 is even cooler, it basicly allows for external interconnects, like usb, but for processors. HT3 could allow for external video cards, and external processor upgrades.

AMD rules now more than ever, this is great news. I love it when creative c/b+ students kick magna cumelade ass.

According to their study, my Exploder is rated at $1.404 per mile, the H3 is $1.949. The H1, however, is still a resource hog, coming in near the top of the list at $3.505, out wasting the hybrids. Also according to their methodology, recycling contributes far more to a vehicle's energy costs than R&D.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Saturday July 22 2006 6:08pm
"why does the fact that it's a Ford matter in this discussion?"
The Hummer numbers are so good because they assume a 300,000 mile lifetime. My experience (and Ford's largest-in-the-nation pension deficit) leads me to believe that your Explorer will be on the scrap heap long before then, that's all. ;)

"Energy costs associated with light-weight alloys and their recycling are not likely to be solved by economies of scale."
True, however Spinella throws in R&D, which certainly is solved by scale and technology maturity, and probably accounts for more cost-delta than recycling.

The big tip-off that this is more of a political study than a scientific study is CNW's refusal to actually release their technical data. Not that I, personally, would understand it, but if it were available then those on the Internet that do understand would probably shred the study in about 5 minutes.

in a trick by intel to confuse customers and gain market share, intel will release a dual dual core, processor. AMD claims that this is not a very efficient design, but conceides that customers may not know the difference and will also release a dual dual core before the year is out, AMD is however challenging Intel to meet AMD time scale to launch a true quad core processor. Now here is where it gets confusing, one of AMD's platforms for this Christmas is the 4x4 platform, think bigfoot work station, and the full specs are kinda weird, but AMD has mentioned that it may have 4 socket on a motherboard, 2 of which may be used for "other processors" and 2 of which would be quad core AMD chips. AMD is working to make hypertransport an easy and powerfull processing buss for asymetrical processing. This is HUGE, and if it works, it will force Intel to use hypertransport. On the downside, AMD has been vauge at best about virtualization and 4x4 tech, so I don't even know if AMD knows what they are going to launch in a few short months.

True, the ability to look to different energy sources is good. We aren't really exporting our polution to Japan as they run off of 80% nuclear power. Unfortunately, the greenies don't like us using things like nuclear or hydroelectric power or coal, which are your best sources of plentiful energy. Mainly I like the article because it will make the greenies' heads explode, not because it has 100% infalible logic (greenies are lucky if they get 10% on a good day).

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Friday July 21 2006 8:01pm
Energy costs associated with light-weight alloys and their recycling are not likely to be solved by economies of scale. For instance: there is a huge demand for titanium, but that demand has not decreased the ammount of energy needed to liberate titanium from its "ore" (sorry, don't know the technical term). Unfortunately the laws of physics are not subject to the laws of economics.

Plus, as hybrid motors are not really energy efficient (anyone with a passing knowledge of thermodynamics should have had a head scratching moment when it was asserted changing kinetic energy into electrical energy then back to kinetic would result in energy savings) even the development of the technology and the facilities to produce them is a waste of resources. Furthermore, there's the fact that hybrid technology is being applied to where it actually is more effective: performance. As electric motors give out a hell of a lot of torque, it didn't take long for people to kick pretentions of being Earth-freindly to the curb and tune up their vehicles for high performance (e.g. Lexus).

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Friday July 21 2006 7:59pm
Actually Nearscape, the less that you drive your car, the MORE the production costs should matter. So for me, I'd be much more environmentally friendly if I bought a new Chevy Suburban than if I bought a new Prius because I don't put more than a couple thousand on a year. Since my Exploder (why does the fact that it's a Ford matter in this discussion? It's still using standard, no-frills parts) was also a used vehicle, that makes me super-duper green in comparison.

Regardless of the manufacturer, personally I have no use for a vehicle that costs me more than its traditional counterpart and whose estimated lifepsan is only 100,000 miles. And Nearscape pull your blinders off.

Posted by: B_W Posted on: Friday July 21 2006 11:27am
Near,
I agree with your logic. However, the cost of these hybrids in their materials and batteries, and the cost to recycle these highly toxic batteries, just plumb costs more. People don't seem to get that it's not just the gas they put in the tank, there are more costs associated with certain 'green' technologies.
Kinda like with ethenol. If you put 10% of it into the gas, sure you're using 10% less gas, but what you are actually doing is: using a fuel that costs more than gas (Right now it's $4 a gallon and rising, subsized by the govenment, coming out of your tax dollars), it takes more gas to produce (because you have to process the corn) and ship (because you can't pipe it, so you have to truck it), it is less efficient than gas (so you need to use more of it), and it wears harder on engines (so you need more cars, which takes more resources to produce). Doesn't look like such a good idea to me, but that's because quite a few people don't think it through.

I say we skip the hybrids. They are messy and not saving that much energy. I'm still all for hydrogen fuel cells. Some of our clients are producing them, and it looks good to me. (space water is still a concern...JIM!!!!) But there are still some hurdles to overcome.

B_W

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Friday July 21 2006 10:18am
Another major shortcoming of the Spinella study is that it compares mature products to new products. Here's the big shocker: new products cost more! Amazing! Once hybrids are no longer "specialty products" with all the associated low-volume premium costs in R&D and manufacturing, then you'll have more accurate numbers. Maybe if he looked at the cost of producing a Tahoe during it's first year of production he'd have a valid study.

Anyone who bought a hybrid to save money in the short term is an idiot. The whole point is to take the first steps in spreading our energy dependence around so it's not so focused on oil, and therefore less suceptible to political upheaval, like say, Israel and Iran blowing up the middle east. If instead of spending $2/mile on gas you're spending $3/mile on R&D, advanced composites, and nuclear power, then the hybrid experiment is a success. Which ironically enough, Spinella's study shows that it is. So why should Toyota "back away"? What, because Ford is going bankrupt? Boo-fucking-hoo.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Friday July 21 2006 9:55am
"I just found out that I am not driving an OPEC Valued Customer Mobile. Instead, all those people who drive Prius's and Hybrid Civics are."

That's not really accurate, since that study includes all energy costs beyond just gas (electricity, recycling, etc), which is a bit beyond the scope of OPEC, so don't expect them to start championing Prius any time soon. Also, to get those numbers you'd have to drive your truck for 300,000 miles, and last I checked, you drive a Ford. Not gonna happen.

I asked my japanese teacher about the conflict last night, and her response was that it was not very nice of North Korea to do such a thing and that someone should stop them. However, when I asked her specifically about the constitution she said that she was not well enough read on the topic and that she would need to catch up before deciding if Japan should change their constitution. She then reiterated that North Korea is acting badly.

she seemed very non direct as i would have expected.

Testing...

1) Hopefully we did. It would be nice to have a few more allies that are willing to actually defend themselves.
2) Rephrase: is it good Nixon improved our relations with China. Absolutely. All Clinton did was allowed our defense industry to leak like a seive and allow China to soak up our rocket technology, which probably wormed its way down into those missile that NK launched. Thanks to Nixon, however, we will have the open channels of communication available so China won't freak out the next time we go to the Yalu River. So, Clinton bad, Nixon good.
2a) How could this have been more like Vietnam? Was Vietnam launching missiles at Hawaii and Japan? I mean, Vietnam did have those attack whales that it sent to sing by our survellience ships, so maybe that parallels this. /sarc
3) Absolutely not. A) It would give China half of Korea. B) China is in no position militarily to do anything about the inevitable shellacking the Seol would take from NK artillery. C) It would legitimize a militarized China at a time when a militarized China is not something that any of China's neighbors wants.
4) It won't change it at all. Anime plots that don't deal with magical girls or tentacle monsters have already taken for granted a Japan that is more militarily involved in the world. See Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

Nearscape: Please fix the board so I don't have to keep breaking up my posts.

/sarc

Ptthhbbt, I wouldn't even call that pre-emptive. Let's see, the "test" rockets fell half-way between Korea and Japan. What do you *think* they are targeting? The Aleutians? And seeing how Japan is one of the least-equipped nations to attack N. Korea in the region, they can hardly claim their rockets are defensive. There's really no comparison to Iraq at all. N. Korea is actually a clear and present danger. If China tested some new rockets that "failed" half way to L.A., I don't think we'd be sitting around wagging our fingers either. They know that our resources are distracted, Europe is clueless, and that China wouldn't mind seeing Japan get hit. I can see how they might want to cover their own asses right about now.

http://digg.com/world_news/Japan_Seriously_considering_strike_against_N._Korea

Japan is considering an amendment or something to enable the non-militaristic country in its constitution to the right a "pre-emptive strike" on North Korea in the event that the situation continues to escalate.

a couple of questions to ponder:
1. did we(Bush) set the example for this?
2. is it a good thing that Clinton bettered relations with China?
2a. if we were still agreediously apposed to China, would this have been more like veitnam?
3. since China is in a better position for war, than Japan, would it be wiser to let China take the lead?
4. how will this change anime(cultural story-telling), if the Japanese go to war with North Korea?

Arnold for President in 2016! Demolition Man, the most prognosticating movie of all time! I guess I better learn to like Taco Bell, huh?

That's fascism for you. Always descending on the US and yet, for some reason, landing in Europe.

Crow,
It just so happens I was putting a system together today, and have just the thing for you. I will e-mail you the specs. It's an ASUS socket AM2 mobo, which can support up to 8gb of DDR2 ram, and that much ram will run you about $800, $400 for the processor, and the rest is really cheap. Should be just the ticket. (if you don't need 8gb of ram, you can just do 4 or 2, it's really easy to scale and upgrade as you need with this board) They also make a version of this mobo with an onboard geforce 6150, which is virtualy free, and should be perfect for your father's needs.

Okay, need some help again. I'm going to be putting together a new PC for my father, so I need some recomendations on dual processor motherboards. This computer's primary purpose is going to be crunching through databases, so I don't need much in the way of video performance (no SLI), but plenty of SATA/SATAII ports would be a plus. Also, need MEMORY. LOTS OF MEMORY.

And should I go Athlon-64 or Opteron?

Now, if they were creating 'snuff machinery' then it would be a crime againt morality...

I'm glad they copied it. Wish they would have kept the previous style, but, eh.

It was reported that a pack of wild geese flew over Big Cedar Lake in West Bend, WI last night around 10:00 pm. The last report of wild geese was last summer when they were followed by a howling griz, but there have been no reports of a howling griz in the area.

Black Metal BBQ at Club last night was pretty cool. There was dead pig, dead bird, dead cow, Dimmu Borgir, and Pentagram Cookies. Delicious Pentagram Cookies...
