Gabe Newell himself admits that there are 85 people employed at Valve. 85 people, and they can't kick out Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, or even a little Counterstrike expansion called Condition Zero. They can't produce anything of worth in 5 years. Valve is ION Storm 2, and HL2 is really Daikatana 2. And i hope i'm wrong. |

So the other day...I was drinking this Russian Vodka...and it was pretty smooth. Yep. Pretty smooth indeed. I just thought I would share that. P.S. True Crime for Xbox is fun...(for the whole family.) |

With only two crew, you wouldn't think those Tau Turbos would be a wee bit unbalanced, but oh boy are they. I can beat a fleet of at least ten Korh-Ah Maruaders, five at a time, with just one of them, which is just not right. From what I've tested so far I can beat at least six Kzer-Za Dreadnaghts (three at a time), two Dreadnaughts and six Spathi eluders (1 and 3 at once), ten Mycon Podships (five at once, but that's nothing special, any sufficiently fast and maneuverable ship can do that), six Vux intruders (3 at once, although the battle is decided in the opening seconds to see if I can escape), and 21 Umgah Drones (7 at once, it's a slaughter). I think my favorite ship is, however, the Tau Bomber. Hard to use, but it makes such lovely explosions. |

Can't forget that lexan face plate that you can empty an entire clip into with harming the guy wearing it. For best hit detection I think I have to give props to Deus Ex, simply because of the way explosions work that make them increadibly dangerous. Sure, there's lots of fire and a big noise, but that's not what kills you. It's that two foot long piece of shrapnel spinning through the air at several hundred miles an hour that'll give you a closed casket funeral. It's the only game I've played where you want to be absolutely sure you have lots of cover when you blow something up, no matter how far away it is. |

| i still hate the armored vests they put in these "realistic" games. Just once, i would like to see one where you get shot on your kevlar-covered chest, and yeah, you survive, but you get knocked on your ass. instead, thanks the the ignorance of the Tom Clancy empire, people seem to think that bulletproof armor makes one practically invincible. I'd like to know how wearing a protective vest somehow magically prevents people from shoot out your knee caps. Delta Force, for all it's silly "foot damage", is still the closest to realism of the whole lot. By the time they got to Land Warrior they tightened up the hit detection quite a lot, i don't know if you knew that. For example, shooting over someone's shoulder no longer gives you a mysterious head shot... i think we should fire up DF2 at a future LAN. That's the real test for Intrigue's Herculean Machines. UT? ah, that's for pussies. SETI? eh, they got cell phones that do that. Now, to actually render Voxel Space grass at 60fps? therein lies a challenge! | |

I'm now putting Prescott into the status of "myth," as it isn't supposed to come out until February now. I've played Tactical Ops, but also never really got into it that much. These games try to be realistic but I'm sorry, if you're a trained swat agent or marine, holding your weapon correctly, you don't have much of a problem keeping your aim while you move forward. Meanwhile these games seem to think if you're moving you won't be able to hit the broadside of a barn unless you come to a complete stop for five seconds. |

by far, the best UT2k3 mod i've hit has been Fraghouse Invasion. http://fraghouse.beyondunreal.com/files_ut2003.php coked-up weapons, hopeless Starship Troopers scenarios, and lots of Hudson immitations. they've got a bonus pack in the works so it should be even better soon. other people swear by Air Buccaneers and Deathball. The former is creative or something, almost so creative i'm scared of it. Deathball just don't interest me, it's a TR2 ripoff at best. And if you want a Counterstrike clone, I believe it's called Frag.Ops nowadays. Personally, i never got the counterstrike bug, so i'm even less interested in the countless clones and sequels. When it came out i was enjoying Team Fortress Classic and Delta Force, both of which were about to be replaced by Tribes 1, and covered the gameplay ideas of CS plus a whole lot more. Of course some of that was because i could 0wnz0r or something in TFC. I guess all that Quake 1 experience came in handy, since by comparison the Half-Life engine was slow-motion. That's all good about Unreal Fortress though, since you can change the speed in the menu, to either play like Half-Life or Quake or anywhere in between. If only Valve would get off their asses and release Team Fortress 2 for that mythical HL2 engine (which may or may not exist), we might have some real goods to play with. Because i don't think Counterstrike is based on HL2, because Planet Half-Life says a significant chunk of the code goes back to Quake / HL1, which makes it around 7 years old. The also note this: "Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is not. Valve has somehow found a way to delay a game that was supposedly finished over a month ago. Incredible. Valve has yet to release an official statement regarding the CS: CZ delay, they haven't responded to any emails, and in general they just don't seem to have much interest in talking about it." By now, it looks like expecting any content from Valve is futile. It's been almost 6 years since HL1, and they haven't done *anything* of their own since! CS was developed by the community. TFC was even more derivitive. HL2, and all related projects and technology are a myth, i tell you. Like Duke Nukem Forever, i'll believe it when i see it, and it better be good. |

| One of the mods for UT98 you have to play is Jailbreak. | |

Yo all, Seeing Justin firing up oldschool Team Fortress on UT98 got me inspired, so I went to PlanetUnreal and downloaded some of the UT98 & UT2k3 conversions. I must say that on a whole, the 98 conversions are of much higher quality and playability. My favorite so far is Tactical Ops. It's basicaly counterstrike for UT, but it is pretty fun. I also tried Strike Force (I think) and that is pretty strange, but yet fun. On the 2k3 side I tried a bunch, but they all sucked. (junglewarfare, troopers, Red something, and there was another one in there) The graphics on the 98 mods look better, the games play better, and all in all they just have a good feel. So, I think at your next lan event we should try some of these fun mods. I also think we should look into the newest version of counterstrike, using the Half-Life 2 engine. (it should be out in late december) I just really liked the origianl Counterstrike alot I guess. It's just more intimate of a game to play with a group of people, much like Armagetron. (and it can be played with less characters than BF1942, so you don't need a zillion bots stealing all my tanks. oh do I sound bitter about that? because I am. Damn bots. stay out of my tanks.) Anyway, in short, UT98 mods = pretty good, UT2k3 mods = ehh, Counterstrike = fun. Well, time for more work. (which = boo) D.R. |

indeed. and i've really been enjoying this lately... www.unrealfortress.com brings back memories of old-school 10th grade LAN parties with GLQuake, a 10-baseT hub (not a switch, mind you), and Natehouse. 2fort5 and storm7 forevah! oh, and gozer, did you ever hit the 3drealms forums for the ROTT source? try getting in touch with the OSX porter (Dr. Lex i think it is). He's taken bug reports there before that have resulted in either his own fix or an icculus fix. might even share his code with you (in fact, under GPL, i think he *has to* if you ask directly). there's that ROTT itch in me....and it's growing....remember my own Super Deathbox? i think it'll be time for a Retro event around here real soon...haul out the win98 first edition.... |

Alright, I am back, It seems as though there is quite a bit of discussion about media for JK03. That's good. All media that is desired to be shown should be announced to myself, so that I may get a plan together for the showing. I will be using DVD technology to show the videos this year, so ideally if you could get me a DV tape (or a quicktime or whatever) in advance, I could put it in my show reel. (making the show better, more unified, more diversified) But since this is not a LAN event, this is not the place to discuss these things. E-mail me personally (doublerig@yahoo.com) and we will discuss what ya'll are planning on producing. Later G's Whisky_Revenge P.S. The captain is in. |

Why hasn't the next event been updated yet? Anywho, we are almost done with photography on my project for JK 2003. I just gotta go runnin' round with one of my actors to get some final shots and then its time for my beloved post-production. Yeah! I just pray the scribble matte (or is it mat?) will look as good as my mind says it will. |

www.blizzard.com well, the WC3 art tools are out, so soon there should be mods for that game as there are for TA, maybe even TA for the WC3 engine, which wouldn't be that hard since by now just about every TA model exists in something compatible with 3ds max. in any case, this will be a community i'll be keeping an eye on, and with luck will provide something of value for future LAN parties. |

Things are looking up for me premiereing some Media at Kwannza. I made a leader last night (okay everyone ohh and ahh). Not as l33t EXTREME (to use the parlance of our times) as CrowScape's Let There be Light but it fits with my studio and it's philosophy. Photography on the feature should be this weekend with shooting for a trailer to the afformentioned (but perhaps now coming in May project) Freelance White Belt Ninja happening over Thanksgiving break. I shall be Directing the feature while my buddy ShadowRHAL will be taking the helm of Freelance (the lest post intensive of the two projects. And not just becasue of the shorter running time.) The bumper or leader or whatever it's called in video-speak, as afformentioned, is already done. :) I really don't wanna be jinxing myself by posting this here. But I'm given' er' tarpaper to get things made. Most everyone up here and around me knows that now that I've got some media to produce I'm actually somewhat alive again. I'd hate to loose that. Anyway, my actors are giving me some positive buzz on the outline for the feature. Now the question boils down to time and it's amounts related to all those involved. Oh, and for as how long the feature will be: Historically I have been a very bad guesser at that. Perhaps that should get a WiD label. ;) |

one thing i try to avoid is fracturing the LAN, and a sure-fire way to do that is to play an RTS in every-man-for-himself mode, like we did with TA (and with WC3 at the previous gathering). the problem is that the game ends at a different time for each player, sometimes by a difference of over and hour. what are those unfortunate players supposed do for that hour? they are effectively banned from the party until the game is over, which is not very hospitable. so they start playing a different game by themselves, and the cohesion of the event is lost. that's why i will always argue for fighting together against a computer team. skill imbalances are not a problem, every player has a good chance to have fun and play a long game. the stronger players can help out the weaker ones, and in the process the weaker ones can *learn something*. playing by yourself and getting stampeded by rapiers and krogoths doesn't really teach you anything, it's just frustrating. but it is not a flaw in the game, it happens in *every* multiplayer game when a skill imbalance is present. its the main reason why i don't like Soul Calibur and it's endless supply of bretheren, because there isn't a "cooperative" mode where you can actually learn with skilled players instead of being hopelessly dominated by them. i believe in creating an environment at a LAN where l33tness is not required to enjoy the event. but playing in the manner in which we played TA punishes (by truncating their playing time) people who weren't able to sit and practice and memorize maps and unit balances before the event. so, in the future maybe we should avoid those RTS free-for-alls, and try to keep the LAN unified! just like that GOP unity! oh yeah! |
