crazy illegal selling of ms software

There is "no legitimate reason why someone would need to buy a certificate authenticating an item without the item attached to it," MacNaughton said. "All of these labels were destined to be sold to someone who would use them to deceive a customer, a business."

The four-month sting indicated hundreds of companies were involved in the practice, but many agreed to stop after receiving cease-and-desist letters, MacNaughton said.

Those who refused to stop were sued in federal courts, each in the state where the company is based.

They were identified as Monarch Technology Inc. of San Clemente and Kenneth Xu of Union City, Calif.; Era Limited of Lake Zurich, Ill.; Micro Info Tech (USA) Corp. of Edison, N.J.; Affordable Computer Warehouse of Clinton, N.Y.; Warp Systems/Computers LLC of Raleigh, N.C.; Master Computer Inc. of State College, Pa.; and Software Provisions of Vancouver, Wash.

For 1000+ mile trip I can now say... Amtrak good. Amtrak food VERY VERY good. I never had a turkey dinner that amazing before. Wish I could have used the lounge car more but the always full dining car was in the way. Still, one could even get little munchies in the lounge car and burgers n' stuff. Prices in the lounge car were about 75 cents more than at a fast food joint but that's to be expected. Although the jostling of the train as it goes over switches and the sudden bright light followed by the WHOOM and KACHUGGA CHUGGA KACHUGGA CHUGGA of a passing freight train takes some getting used to. Unfortunately, on my one night aboard, I didn't. I think I got about an hour of sleep.

Bus, bad. Bus okay for a 1 day trip. Bus very bad for overnight. I can't recall the last time I was so exhausted. Athough in both instances I got to talk to some cool people. At the same time, I really wished I had the ability to get up at any time I wanted and just walk around. As a dude of average height, I can't stress that luxury enough.

And now back to reality. Fwee!

Big Whisky still whalloped me even with the quotes.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Tuesday November 23 2004 11:42am
Oh, guys, when you do a google fight with a name that is two words, make sure you put it in quotations, e.g. "Big Whisky" instead of just Big Whisky.

As for my name, last I checked, only two of the references to CrowScape were not in reference to me. I think it was some crappy poem or something.

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Tuesday November 23 2004 11:28am
Now, if only we could googlefight with just referances to ourselves, that would be great.

"I personally am mentioned three times, whilest that Lucky Jim is mentioned twice. Twah Ha!"

DBBC: Fire hazard - depends on the material used. However most clothing will ignite in the microwave at some point. The greatest danger actually comes from what can result from using the microwave at all for clothing. If done once or twice, it probably won't have much affect. However, a life time of doing this can easily lead to multiple types of cancer. When the clothes are in the microwave, the outermost electrons become excited and generate free radicals. These outermost electrons are stripped off with use. Mind you the same thing happens anytime you put a shirt on (thus the static). However, with microwave does it 10,000 times more per second. In time this could have serious health implications. By the way...this is also why it is bad to eat only microwaved food - on a simple scale, the rotational energy imparted to water molecules in your food by the microwave heats the food up, but free radicals may still be generated. So now you know....and knowing is half the battle.

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Thursday November 11 2004 10:21am
I wonder what the Empire would have used to dry out their clothes. I mean, the Emperor has those giant robes, and all those guys in red. Do you think they have some kind of 'laundry monster' that somehow dryes out all the robes? Do you think there was an Emperial robe shrinkage problem? What do you think would happen if you shrunk the Emperior's robes? (or is it so important that he washes his own?)

DBBQC, why were you trying the micro anyway? There isn't much ventalation in there, and that's what dryes your clothing anyway. Just put a fan on your soaking wet undies and you will be golden in notime, next time.

B_W

Posted by: Dream BBQ Child Posted on: Thursday November 11 2004 7:52am
I do not recommend using the microwave to dry out your clothes. I don't know what the fire hazard is but it just doesn't do a very good job.

Greetings all,
Well, I am glad I fianlly got a somewhat productive, vastly geeky discussion going on here. And it was worth the cursing by the way. (thank you for that Peter)

By the way, Peter, your little rant made my whole day! ;)

Nearscape, I think the dianoga's waste is somehow much less of a problem than what it takes care of. Kinda like those skum suckers in your fishtank, they eat all the crap, and their crap is somehow easier to deal with. Really thinking about this whole thing, they must have put alot of initial thought into it, what with the creature and all. All I remember was being freaked out as a kid! ;) (I hated that scene...)
Also, I think 'garbage planes' aren't nearly as effective as Superlazers or Turbolazers. (or whatever they call them) Garbage planes are just...less...than.

My final thoughts on the 'garbage monster' are, that any time you are able to introduce a 'monster' into a system and have it work...do it! After all, I have been wanting to fill different places full of mosters for years, and here the Empire has been doing it all along! ;)

Later all,
Cursed_Whisky

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Wednesday November 10 2004 10:04am
What about the dianoga's waste? Also, why not sling these "garbage planes" at your enemies using, let's say, space magnets? Ionization seems like a waste of good ammo.

Dr. Frasier: "How can she do that?"
O'Neill: "With magnets!"

Posted by: Dream BBQ Child Posted on: Tuesday November 9 2004 11:11pm
Is anyone else aware that they're building a new Amtrak terminal down by Mitchell International? They're like building it and everything. I haven't found out if they're closing the crappy terminal down (is it in the third ward?) but why would they keep it open eh?

It's amazing how quickly public transportation becomes important to one when they no longer have an available car. :)

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Tuesday November 9 2004 10:08pm
I'm not convinced on the praticality of having a garbage monster handle organic waste. It would make more sense to me to route such waste into an agricultural area to provide food for a large crew.

As for the trash and lightspeed; you assume that the Star Destroyers actually generate the near-infinite power to get them to light speed. As the near-instantaneous acceleration should clue you in on, this is unlikely (namely because the structure of the ship couldn't take it, not to mention the crew). Instead, consider this: Star Destroyer gets a TINY bit of momentum going in the direction it wants. Next, some fantastic system (i.e. inertial dampeners) brings the total mass of the Star Destroyer to zero. What happens? Instantaneous acceleration to light speed for everyone on board. It doesn't matter if the Star Destroyer hits anything traveling at this fantastic speed as, due to its lack of mass and low starting momentum, any collision would have very little energy involved. You could play lightspeed pinball with the Star Destoryer and it would not so much as scratch the paint.

Posted by: Peter Posted on: Tuesday November 9 2004 8:35pm
Okay...I guess my arm has been proverbially twisted...I will respond. I just want you to know...you brought this on yourself.

While the author does make some interesting points, he makes one problematic assumption. The Death Star does not jettison the trash the same way that Star Destroyers do (for exactly the reason that Crow just gave). The Death Star compacts trash before sending it to an "ionization chamber". As best as I can tell, the trash is used as fuel of a sorts, though the science is not completely mapped out. That said, I will now approach his argument by the same point system he himself employs:
1) You wouldn't think that having an open vent to the garbage disposal is a smart thing for the reasons mentioned by the author. That said, look where they are: the detention bay. It's not supposed to be the most pleasant of locations anyway. Perhaps having the vent there acts as an extra kick in the pants to the prisoners of the Empire. After all, during the French soldiers would urinate in dingy corners of dungeons to make the prisoners gag and vomit in their cells thereby having to deal with the smell of that as well. This would be a type of torture I imagine. As for how did Princess Leia know that the vent was there? Well..to quote Tucan Sam, "follow your nose!". She may have smelt it, being that her cell was right next to the vent that she found it an easy alternative escape.

2. Can't argue this one. It is always much smarter to push with a single wall against an anchored surface.

3. If you actually notice, the thin rod does nothing to slow down the trash compactor. If fact, the thing starts bending as soon as Han introduces it. Thus it really isn't slowing it down any. Now if the question is, why is the trash compactor so slow? Bad motors? Heavy walls? Your guess is as good as mine.

4. We don't know that the trash compactor doesn't smash from the top as well. The walls did not finish collapsing on the sides before R2 shut down the trash compactor. Most trash compactors (and Sheets has confirmed that the Marquette compactor works this way as well) compact the sides first, then compact the top and bottom. If R2 hadn't shut it down, it may have been that the trash compactor would smash from the top down as well.

5. This line doesn't make as much sense: "Presumably, the creature survives because the moving walls do not extend all the way to the floor of the room, where the liquid is." Just above, he was asking why the walls don't smash down from the top...yet here he gives a valid explanation why! If the trash is sitting on top of a liquid base, then smashing the garbage downward would smash it into the liquid, squishing the creature. Where as if the walls crush sideways, it is possible that the base of the distending wall is higher than the level of the liquid so that the creature remains safe. As for the arguement about the "heavy machinery" clogging up the walls...there already seems to be a very good deal of heavy machinery (just look at the corners of the trash compactor...if you look closely there is both a Maytag dryer and a washing machine!). Apparently that is not an issue. Finally.....yes...the Dianoga (creature in the trash compactor - side note: the original name of the Jedi in the earliest script of Star Wars Journal of the Whils was Dai Noga. The name became Dai...then finally Jedi...the creature in the trash was named a Dianoga...interesting, eh?) is a parasitic creature that lives off of organic waste. It metabolizes the waste thus sanitizing the sewage portion of the waste...Don't believe me? Here it is on the official site: www.starwars.com/databank/creature/dianoga/index.html

6. Isn't it less efficient to have two separate systems when the one system seems to be working fine enough on its own?

7. "Why care about reducing its organic output?" How would you like to be one of the workers outside the Death Star if organic waste gets ejected, or perhaps one of the TIE pilots? (Think of Warren Keffer colliding with the Babylon 5 teddy bear that Sherridan jettisons only not as cute and cuddly). Organic matter may not get "ionized" so its handy that the dianoga takes care of it. The dianoga is only doing its job, so give it a break already!

8. Once again, isn't it less efficient to build spaceships to handle the garbage when the Death Star already does it on its own and even recycles it?

9. Repeat, the trash is not ejected. Only Star Destroyers jettison the trash. This does bring up an interesting point though...Star Destroyers jettison their trash before jumping to lightspeed. Unfortunately, as mass reaches the speed of light, it becomes infinite. That said, wouldn't the garbage get sucked into lightspace with the ship? If so, this is more problematic than running into the trash as you are flying through space. Think about it. The starship can control when it stops traveling at lightspeed. The trash however cannot. Once it gets accelerated, the junk will just continue to travel at the speed to which it has been accelerated unless it collides with something. Thus, shouldn't all star destroyers that dump trash before jumping to lightspeed get destroyed by their trash trail folling them as soon as they slow down from lightspeed?

Finally....please note, the TRASH COMPACTOR was a story device, a way to put the heroes in further peril. Star Wars was made by Lucas to harken back to the old Saturday adventure serials he saw as a kid. As a result, he included a time tested sci-fi plot - the compacting room. What he did was add a reason for a compacting room. Previous incarnations had the enemy somehow purposefully building a room that compacts, waiting for the heroes to accidentally stop in that room before locking it and starting the motor up. Now it makes some sense why that device is there. The rest of the "ionization chamber" lore is made up to cover the fact that this was just a plot device and never meant to undergo the prolific scrutiny which the sci-fi fans have given it.

Frankly, I don't know which is worse...the fact that this poor individual wasted at least an hour of his life thinking these questions up, debating it with others, writing it, and posting it, or the fact that I have just spent ten minutes of my own life responding to it.

CURSE YOU WHISKY!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Tuesday November 9 2004 5:32pm
I have to wonder why the Imperials are jettisoning their junk; it's so inefficient/impracticle. I mean I don't expect them to be environmentalists, but as is stated in the article, debris becomes a navigation hazard. Additionally, with the Death Star you're dealing with a LOT of waste being generated, and then theoretically dumped out into space. This means that you're going to have to have an army of resupply ships to keep the thing going. Logisticaly it makes a lot of sense to recycle as much as possible. Keep in mind that the Death Star is, well, big, and by that virtue it has a significant ammount of gravity. Any trash that it jettisons is just as likely to rain back down on the Death Star's surface, perhaps impairing a couple key laser batteries or clogging a certain exhaust port.

This is why you see major corporations pattenting seemingly stupid or obvious things, as if they don't some moron like this guy will patent it and try to extort money from them; not because, as many slashdotters would have you believe, they want to screw everyone else.

Well, that's quite insane.

I will now be filing lawsuits on their violation of my 'use of water and air for life' patent so please L.B.'s ceace and disist!

Yeah.

In other news, all 3D games found to be patent-infringing!

I find myself checking my clock to make sure it's not April 1st.

I voted for a libertarian! Jerry Kohn for Senate. With a whopping 1.3% of the vote he did almost as well as Keyes.

I like feingold. He thinks. I also like Bush. He does what he says he's gonna do. I wish I could like Kerry, really I do. It's just that I don't know a think he was gonna do. Not one thing. Oh well.

At least I speak for myself Mr. Liberal. ;) I am going to think that you are also the anti-whisky, and for that, and that alone you will recieve the giant ass kicking you deserve.

Oh yeah.

I voted for Kerry! and Feingold!

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Wednesday November 3 2004 2:52pm
Well, I placed two votes yesterday. One was for a candidate that always delivers on his promises... another 'Lucky Jim'... Jim Beam. Let me just say that my vote was not wasted.

Now, I wanna get on with my life.

Ok. Who wants to help me write a song about Whisky Sours? They are delicious...delicious.

Actually, I never expected either to go Bush (All right, I might have fanatsized about NJ. A guy can dream, can't he?). I'm used to living in States that are locked Dem. I kinda like being a light in the dark.

BTW: I think "Winners don't do Shrub" would be closer to what you're looking for. "Bush" just doesn't sound close enough to "Drugs" IMHO.

Oh well, enjoy the strength, wealth, security, and next year's Oscar winner from Michale Moore everyone!

You left this one wide open...

Winners don't do Bush. (Don't take that as a cut guy. Illinois AND even NJ went to Kerry which makes you a winner too. Although I'm sure you're a kicking and screaming one over that.)

Sigh... still it's not like you have anything to worry about. The chance of your truth prevailing in the end is very, very high this morning. And it even has more control over the house and the senate than it did yesterday. Sheit you even have the popular vote so over half this country has shown itself to think like you do! This is what they call a beautiful morning for you and the majority of the posters here eh?

All I can say is, may we the people have chosen wisely.

Common Wisconsin! You can go Bush! You can do it! I mean, all the cool states are doing it, like Iowa and New Mexico, and you want to be cool right?

Please, just go Bush, then we won't have to worry about any fiasco in Ohio and we can get on with our lives... pretty please?

At least the good beer I'm drinking should see me feel better tomarrow than the crappy ass wine I had 4 years ago.

And it looks like I'm getting Feingold. So there's some good news. :)

I am feeling a harsh mailiaise come over me.

I am unable to act. I am unable to feel. I am unable to dream.

Oh sweet relief! Come down from the heavens!

ALAS!

ALAS!

Ahh... only had to wait 1hr and 45 minutes in line to vote today. May it be better for all ya'll tomarrow. At least I'm DONE with this for 2k4. And since I was downtown and I didn't have to drop $60 for parking for next mo and the city missed my car when I went over time I will now be able to lose myself in the wonderful worked of San Andreas for a few months as the recount revote rewhat-ever-else-the-onion-said goes on.

Oh yeah.
