| It's not necessarily true that there is something wrong with the other games. Take my experiance with Savage, for instance. I was completely hooked on the game at the begining of the LAN party. Finally, after playing it non-stop until morning light, I realized it actually sucked. It wasn't that there was something wrong with the other games that I stuck with Savage for that long, it's just that it was different and a distraction. | |

Well, I really hate to break this to you all, but if a game about bridging a gap is more exciting than other LAN activities, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE OTHER GAMES. I'm sorry I am in such a bad mood lately, it's just that there has been alot of stuff going on with me. (lan event wise, and otherwise) There was definatly something missing at the last event, and I don't know what that was, but it just was not very fun. (for me anyway) So, I think I will be getting out of the LAN business and leave the regulation, hosting, rules creation, formatting, annotations writng, paperwork lugging, table tabulating, scripting, games critiquing, content providing, and games selecting up to 'The Lord of the Lan' Mr. Bosar. If anyone needs to get in contact with me my E-mail is posted here. If anyone would like to hand themselves over to madess and drink themselves into oblivion, (where I will be happily residing for the next few days) that will be occuring tonight, (10-31-03), tomorrow, possibly Sunday, etc. So drop me an e-mail if you would like to hand yourself over. Anyway Later Gs, David R. |

I gotta agree with Justin on the Bridge It issue. While that game was being played by three people at once LAN activity basically died. It's a fun game, no question, and LAN parties should partly be about introducing fun games to people, but I really hope Bridge It does not see popularity at the next LAN. As for TA and the Krogoth, I'm thinking of putting together a comprehensive run down of the units and what they're good for for the next LAN. Both the Arm and the Core can handle a few Krogoths with the correct units and defensive stuctures (and I'm not talking about Vulcans or Buzzsaws). And next time I want to make absolutely sure that the Necro is properly installed on everyone's machines, because I've yet to have a LAN game where I can use it (so check your computers out as well Justin). That's part of the reason I self destructed at the end. "Ah shoot... perfect chance for my Necros to shine and I can't have any... nutz." That and I don't think you guys woulda liked having that game last another hour, hour-and-a-half... plus all the explosions were purdy. |

wouldn't you know, the UT community released an excellent map pack, right after the LAN party. so, the map situation is improving there, just not in time for that event. but remember, the map set that originally shipped with UT_98 was actually worse, especially in the CTF category. most of them were completely unbalanced (like Command) and the rest were impossible to score on with good human snipers (Face). the *only* CTF map that has stood the test of time and still gets played is Lava Giant. It took about 2 years for the community to generate quality level set that gets played today and makes UT the best modern multiplayer FPS out there. the great games improve over time, so of course UT_2003 is inferior to UT_98, the problem is that it is too new. i believe this is the current incarnation of that Half Life mod you love so much: http://www.aut2k3.com/ and finally, bridge it is a great game, i never questioned it. so are Lemmings and Daggerfall and Sonic the Hedgehog. but to play them at a gathering is antisocial in my opinion, because they are designed to be played alone. just like if everyone started playing Bridge It at the same time, interaction practically ceases. that certainly doesn't reflect the spirit of any gathering. its like if we all played deathmatch, but on different maps! i just think it's perfectly reasonable to ask for *multiplayer* games at a LAN party. cooperation and competition. trying to pile our entire army onto the wings of a bomber and crossing the channel in 1942. 2 players sandwiching a third in Armagetron. now *that* is when the LAN party truly meets its potential, and the effort of hauling our equipment around becomes worthwhile. and that's what i'll remember years from now, not how that one bridge that Intrigue built fell down that one time. will Bridge It be just as fun 4 or 5 or 6 years from now, as StarCraft and UT and TA are? not likely, because the possibility for new multiplayer experiences is zero. so, that is the one "rule" that i would like to see upheld, and that's my argument for it. i'm not here to dictate, i just didn't expect such enthusiasm for the concept of single-player LAN parties. if everyone else disagrees, then my points are moot, that's what's so great about mob-rule/democracy, and that's why the forum is here. people can say what they want. and remember, the awards weren't my idea, i certainly won't keep them around if no one else wants them. |

Greetings all, Sorry, justin, I disagree. I judge a game at an even by how fun it is, and how much buzz it generated. I don't know who made up these gathering judging rules, but they should reflect the overall spirit of the event, and what made it truly memorable. In short, the game highpoints for me were multiplayer 1942 against each other (not as much against just the computer), and as far as a new game goes I really liked the bridge game. That's just me. I liked getting my ass totaly kicked in TA, although I think that ruined TA for me. Don't know how to defend against those beehemoth guys at all. I kinda liked capture the beer, but I am not so much a fan of the maps in 2k3. Other than that not too much out there. Hopefully by 2004 we will have a little half life, XIII, possibly a little Doom 3, some UT2k4, stuff like that. Anyway, that's my 2¢ Big_Whisky, 28 P.S. What ever happened to Eric Barbiauex? No call. No e-mail. No nothing. Hmmm... |

| Posted by: justin | Posted on: Wednesday October 29 2003 4:49pm |
| the problem is that bridge it has no multiplayer potential, which is kinda important at a LAN. | |

Me thinks that those working on the ROTT port aren't playing the game themselves. As soon as you get 100 aunk coins the game crashes. AND the guy doing the 1337 OS X port isn't posting his source code SO if I wanted to fix it I'd have to start over myself. Grumble fuss piss n' moan. |

Greetings, Well, to those that attended the event, I hope you had an adequate time. When I set out to host this event, my goal was to provide an environment that was both visually appealing and very conductive to gaming. And I believe I was successful at that. To those who were unable to attend, I hope to see you at future Lan Events. Unfortunaly, I, your gracious host, am being excluded from the next Lan Event ( ;) ) which will be the weekend of December 6th, the same weekend as JK03. So I hope to see you all at the gathering, although the 'Lan Action' I will not be able to particiapte in. Alright, if there is anything else, let me know @ doublerig@yahoo.com . Once again to those that came, thank you, and to those who could not, I hope to see you all soon. D.R. aka Big_Whisky |

these are difficult times indeed. Aphex, as it was, is also dead. i installed XP, but it failed to prevent system crashes, although it did provide some useful feedback, unlike '98, which just rebooted without so much as an illegal operation. unfortunately, the feedback suggested failure in the most critical hardware, most likely the address register in the CPU, and probably the AGP bus as well. however, there might be an Aphex 2.0 in time for the LAN, as i can replace the CPU and motherboard for around $100 (which will double the performance). lesson learned: A-bit and VIA = pain. and Thunderbird probably not so good either. fortunately, Thoroughbreds are a dime a dozen these days. and considering Aphex 1.0 cost around $450 two years ago, i got precisely what i paid for. |

/me wishes Macs had a proper clipboard, and Avid OMF files inherited names that were decipherable! cleaning out my work computer is a real bitch! in other news, Intrigue should have one, possibly two spare computers for the gathering, and I'll probably haul Aphex along just in case. Intrigue has that extra LCD and Matt K has an extra CRT. so, CrowScape and DBBQC, you don't need to bring computers if you don't want to. I'll probably be installing XP on Aphex before the gathering to see if that has any effect on the reliable crashing of WC3 and UT2k3, but if we play mostly old-schoool UT, TA, and StarCraft, that machine may be of use in any case. also, a Gigabit switch will be present, so if any of you were thinking about grabbing a new NIC for the holidays, now is the time to do it. |
|
| Posted by: CrowScape | Posted on: Wednesday October 15 2003 1:47am |
| Of all the... I figured out what's causing parts of my unit to be invisible in TA. It turns out, TA does not like to render TRIANGLES! Quadrangles are perfectly alright, BUT NOT TRIANGLES! Sweet Jesus! So, now I need to go through the mesh of my model and eliminate every single triangle... at least that'll lessen the polycount and make texturing easier, but still! TRIANGLES! WTF? | |
| Posted by: CrowScape | Posted on: Wednesday October 15 2003 12:27am |
| Well, TA can now load my unit without crashing, although the fact that most of the parts are mostly invisible has me concerned (and it's not because they're backfaces). However, the good news is that fifty units with 660 polygons each don't seem to be a problem for my lowly PIII... yet. | |

2 things 1. I don't think we need a picture of the entrance to my place. Most of you have been there multipal times, and if you can't find it you probably will not have the strength to participate in the games. 2. Mr. Barton is in critical condition. Please light a candle and let's all hope for the best. Hey, anything else you need, let me know! D.R. |

| I'm trying my hand at making a TA unit. Naturally I'm not taking the logical approach of doing something small so I can get the hang of it, oh no! No, I'm starting out trying to build a unit that is probably more complicated in its movements than anything Cavedog or, from what I can tell, any third-party has done. Hopefully I'll have it and it's Arm equivalent done in time for the LAN. | |

no prob, i'll get the picture all by myself if i find out anyone needs it. http://www.redvsblue.com/appleswitch.shtml the blood gulch videos are also a hoot, even if they are based on that lame-ass Halo thingie, don't hold that against them as they contain great humor that applies to the whole FPS genre. |

I would if I had one. I haven't documented the entrance to my home yet on film or video. I have been meaning to get to that, but you know, with the way the economy is going, I just haven't had the time. (don't as me I'm out of it today and every day lately) Trust me it's the Douglas Plaza, my number is 12980, and it is right across the street from bluemound bowl. Most of you have been there before, and if you have not just let me know and I will get more specific. Thanks ya'll, D.R. |

according to http://www.planetannihilation.com/ the Star Wars mod for TA, probably the most ambitions mod for that wonderful little RTS, is close to a release. we may see it in time for the LAN! now, if only Unreal Annihilation were as far, man, would we have a great time cross-pollinating our favorite games. |

Greetings all, Yes, we can play some UT_98. I really don't like 2k3 very much at all, but I thought ya'll loved it so much we needed more of it! Good to hear. I don't know about that 2k4. We will see if it even gets realeased on time... (a concept foreign to many in the industry) The Justins will be most likely the one's in charge of the additional computer department. I will probably have one additional box reserved for floating guests, but if there are no floating guests at the time anyone will be welcome to it. Anything else? Let me know. D.R. |

Yeah, UT2K3 seems to put much more emphasis on the twitch aspect of the game, whereas the original Unreal seemed a bit more, well, relaxed, I guess. It seems to play more like a game of Quake III. Plus the starting assualt rifle sucks compared to my beloved Enforcer. I may well attend. Additionally, I may also have a job by then that does not involve rotating disc shaped pieces of machine masticated bovine muscle and fat tissue over an artificial heat source! If I bring large amounts of alcohol, you will know I have some kind of dependable income. Would there be any opportunity to dine at that wonderful Chinese Buffet over the LAN weekend? I swear, if I was still in Milwaukee I'd be addicted to that place. Oh, and will any machines/monitors be available for the technologically challenged? |

very good then, i will begin transferring that excellent data to the appropriate event pages, with some html-ification perhaps. although i personally hope that some of that UT2003 time morphs into some Classic UT, as I'm not the only one who feels that, when all the scores are culminated, and the shinyness of the graphics wears off, the 2003 edition falls short of what it's predecessor has become, thanks in no small part to modding and user maps, of course. but on the other hand, Bombing Run mode sure does rock. |

I hope I just did not see some hating on my precious BF_1942, becasue playing that was the best part of the last LAN event for me. Especialy Sunday afternoon, for those who stuck around, it was quite a sweet time. Not to mention the drunken-plane-attempting-to-fly hi-larity of Friday night. It just does not get much better that that [I must say]. (BTW, the controls, hit detection, and pace bring a tear to this old LAN man's eye, but that's just my personal opinion, don't let it sway you one little bit) Now that that's out of the way, time for some time breakdowns. Network assembladge should begin with old Mr. Kruger possibly Mr. Bosar, and myself Thursday the 23rd in the evening. General arrival should commence after 6:00pm Friday, and can continue into the night. Games to be played: (these numbers are not hard by any means, just serving as a guide) Friday: 8:00pm-10:00pm Network testing and UT2k3 10:00pm-12:00am BF1942 12:00am-close FREE for whomever wants to stay up Saturday: pre-noon FREE 12:00pm-1:30pm UT2k3 1:30pm-3:30pm Starcraft or TA 3:30pm-6:00pm Armegedtron or a New Game 6:00pm-8:00pm BF1942 8:00pm-10:00pm RTS of your choice 10:00pm-12:00am Jedi Knight II or III (or both) 12:00am-close FREE Sunday: TBA/FREE for those who stick around FOOD: (dinners I will provide; lunch you are on your own; limited soda, beer, & snacks will be available; all the Whisky you can drink will be provided, bringing your favorite soda/snacks would be appreciated) Friday Dinner: Frozen Pizzas Saturday Dinner: Dave's Famous Chili My address: 12980 W. Bluemound Rd #301 Elm Grove, WI 53122 That should do it. Send any quesitons to doublerig@yahoo.com Thanks, Big_Whisky |

the Whisky gathering is now posted here as the current event. be there! as for a new game, i would suggest Homeworld 2, or more realistically, the demo. fun fun fun! download it, it includes a very nice tutorial. it bends the RTS genre rules a bit, and thus has a steeper learning curve, but i think it'd make for good times at a LAN. otherwise, the gaming scene looks quite bleak for a little while. all the "big" titles everyone is waiting for, such as Doom 3, Half-Life 2, and even Halo 2 seem to be perpetually delayed, as Whisky pointed out. it's going to be a harsh holiday season for these companies if all these titles fail to make the Christmas rush. at least it looks like UT2004 is on track, maybe we'll even get a demo before the LAN. i can't wait to try Onslaught mode, or as i like to call it, "Destruction Zone 2004". there's always some oldies that haven't been played much at recent LANs. I've noticed a repackaged Tribes 2 in bargain bins lately for like $10 bucks, so there's no excuse not to have this one installed when you show up. with the last patch, the engine is incredibly efficient and should run smoothly on even those outdated machines. I would like to try the cooperative vehicles, such as the bomber, since they don't seem to work well online but should be a hoot in a LAN situation. almost like BF1942, but without the horrendous controls, frustrating hit-detection, and the glacial pace which made that game fizzle at the last LAN. oh, and bring on Timewarp! |

Hey hey hey, JK03 will be the first Saturday in December, however, there still is quite a bit up in the air. I still need a location, and some media. Other than that things are on track. (aka, there isn't anything but a date yet.) That date being: December 6th. Mark your calenders. However, there will be no gaming there! There will be sweet sweet gaming at the event. I am leaning to the left, and toward the later of the October dates. (jim does that still pose a problem?) I am also thinking about introducing Jedi Knight III as a new game this event. Would anyone like to try that? Any other issues? Who is coming? (besides me) It doesn't matter though, because I will be hosting it even if it is just lonely lonely me. Well that's all for now. I hope to hear from everyone soon. --Mr. Whisky |

Hey hey hey ya'll, It will soon be time for another event. This one will be at the estates, so prepare for heavy action, a quality facility, and to be very very quiet! (just kidding, you only have to be moderatly quiet...:) Hey, i'm going to start stocking up the coffers and stoking the fires, so let me know anything special you have in mind. (meal wise, supplies wise, and games wise) Hey, while i'm ranting, let's all not buy Half Life II. (if it ever comes out) I'm sick of Valve and there socialist agenda. Sorry, I am not going to buy an ATI product in order to run their silly little game. I can't beleive the framerate that Nvidia cards are pushing. (it makes me sick) Oh, and I have one thing to say... BOO!!! Back to the lan event. How's about the 24th 25th and 26th? That sounds great to me. The week before would work, but that seems a little close. Let's see what ya'll have to say I am game either way. So give old Mr. Whisky a call or drop him a little note. 262.780.1527, doublerig@yahoo.com, or post it up here. Also let me know if your thinking about staying over, cuz I can put you up. Later ya'll, Mr. Whisky |
