I now have a demon running around, reuniting women with their cows, farmers with their sheep, and old men with their daughters... yeah...

I'm still not sure how this will work as a LAN game, but since we've got at least three people with it, what the hell. Also, the full version runs a lot better than the demo version, which makes me and my ancient computer very happy.

Dag, yo.

I don't know who this secretive 'Mr. O.' is, but if he's dishing out the big B, i'm totally down with his 'jive'.

Just so everyone knows where to go. Its 10900 W Bluemound Rd #313 (Arvada apartments). Basically Highway 100 and Bluemound but actually 109th and Bluemound. Parking is available on Bluemound and also lots on 109th. But if people dont like having their vehicles on the street, even though Wauwatosa is pretty safe, we can shuttle from Dave's as mentioned before. Setup can be Thursday night, a small fee of a beer will be imposed but nothing that Mr.O can't handle. I will need people to bring some tables/chairs and a probably another router too. I have wireless available (to parady Fox Sports "802.11g the finest in wireless communications") and a normal wired router that can be setup. Also I have my laptop which is awesome so now my hoover doesnt need to be heard during the event unless someone needs a pc.

*CORRECTION*

Mr. Kump[hhhph] said that I was welcome to drink whisky at his place at 6am. Not 3am. Just to make that clear, I don't want any lies or half truths proliferating.

B_W

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Thursday September 29 2005 1:05pm
This is good news. According to Mr. Kump[pphh], I might even be able to get some set up action going on THURSDAY. Which means that I can begin the gaming action as soon as I get off of work Friday. That's what I call, a good time! Also, parking shouldn't be much of a problem unlike at Juneau, but if there is a large contingent I would be happy to run the whisky shuttle over to the estates for advanced parking procedures. (it's like 1 mile away) Also we will be mere steps from the 'breeze through' which will make heavy drinking ever so more convienient.

So, friday night/saturday/sunday i'm down and ready for. If anyone wants to start the setup thrusday/predrinking/danceoff Thursday i'm 'down'.

Also Mr. Kump offered that any time I wanted to I could drink whisky at his place at 3am. (in jest) However, this will be a real opporunity for that to happen. This is good news.

HL2, CS, DOD, Xtreme, Sacred, Possibly Worms4, good times, phat rhymes, it's all good.

I have inspected the JVT premises, and there were many pleasant surprises. Unlike JBlock, there are dozens of LAN-friendly chairs available, a deep and round bar for either food or PCs, power is logically available on pillars to minimize cable runs, and no stairs to get to the kitchen/bathrooms. There is also a buzzer to let peeps in, and rooftop access. And for the security concerns, when I reserve the room, I am the only one with a key besides management, entrance requires unlocking both the main lobby and the roof breezeway, and there are security cameras on both. So it is more secure than any of our homes for leaving all that "1337 gear" in.

Oh, and there's a fireplace, which PWNZ.

But unfortunately, my solutions are too much work to be worth the trip, so I have spoken with the Prime/Japs Consortium, and they will be generously donating the location for the Oct 8th LAN, in Elm Grove. For those coming from out of town, this is quite close to the Whisky Estates. I will get more precise directions out once I have them, or if you'd rather rendezvous downtown, that can be arranged too. The new locations for Intrigue and myself are roughly 9 blocks north of where we used to be, on either side of the Metro Market (so you take the same exit, just go north instead of south). If there is going to be a Green Bay contingent, please let me know the whens and how manys, so I can work on sleeping arrangements.

Got the HL2 silver package ready to go. Haven't downloaded all the Source stuff yet, but the Steam version of TFC has been cleaned up a bit. Gonna find out if I can use my same account to run a server on another computer at the same time...

Intrigue, thanks for the equipment donations as always, let's talk tonight about which of those machines I can install my dedicated stuffs on (probably the 2ghz with the worst video card?). I figured out how to write custom installers using Director, so I'll work on adding easier UT and Tribes map distribution to the SpooLAN companion disc.

i dont kare where the korporate lan gamming is, I have plenty of 1337 stuff too.
i have 7 machines that are 2ghz or higher, some are laptops, but the point is,
as long as we have games for everyone, we should all be able to game on something
nice.

eric, has said that he is free that weekend, and nick is excited about some lan gaming
so as long as the two (almost) married guys tell thier gf in advance i think this could
be a good showing.

my place is a possibility still, my neighbors are moving in this weekend, and if we need it, i have PLENTY OF SPACE in the basement, or upstairs in the dinning room.

I do ask, that i can bring the xtra equipment on thursday, so that i can game too on friday, as much
as i like computer networks and setting up lans, i get tired of doing that while others are gaming.

so here is the 1337 list
---Laptops---
1 tablet PC 1gb ram 2ghz (dan) <--- will be reloaded
2 amd64 machines with ~1.5gb ram and 2Ghz (laptop, boler)
---servers---
1 1.4ghz domain controller (zeus)
1 1.8ghz 1 terabyte fileserver (athena)
---avalible gamming machines---
1 2.~ghz amd64 6800 ultra (nalouke)
1 2.~ghz amd64 6200 pci express turbocache (mercury)
1 2.~ghz amd64 1100 quadro (intrigue)
1 2.~ghz amd64 ti4400 (unnamed)
---Networking---
2 routers
3-4 8 port gigabit lan switches
1 24 port gigabit lan switch
1 24 port 100 baset lan switch
2 wireless access points
---LCDs---
4 samsung 17" displays (nalouke gets at least one of these)
2 eizonano 16" displays

i am willing to replace the ti4400 with one of two senerios/ one i buy a 7800 and the 6800 goes there, or two, i get another 6200 or 7200 for it.

if jb and i know what games we are playing, we can set up athena to serve them, and if it seems like the server needs alittle more juice, its dualcore ready and i am dying to try that.

I am also working on a patch that will allow us to use clone cd, etc..

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Thursday September 29 2005 1:15am
I hear the venue has changed again. What's the score?

I also would not trust my gear in a strange party room @ night. I have some 1337 stuff, and if it were to leave me I would be sad.

Also, if we don't get rolling on friday, as is our tradition, that means saturday afternoon, like at Jblock, which was OK I guess, but I would rather get that out of the way friday. Oh, and the best part for me is sleeping in the LAN room. Gives me hope...for the future. ;) That's just me though. ;)

But, this ain't my show, as they say, so whatever goes is fine by me, fine like a fine wine.

I suggest again that any and all get a taste of that HL2 action, because DODSource is pretty good.

Naturally, I care little about Friday, what with me not being able to get to my car until 5:30, which means it's rush hour so I'll probably hold off driving up until around 7:00. My ETA will therefore be 8:30-9:00. So, the question is where do I go? I mean, you guys are no longer at the Jefferson Block appartments, right? I will most certainly be in need of directions... and booze... and pizza... and hos... and a towel.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Wednesday September 28 2005 1:54pm
"Probably not worth a trip w/full gear. I might just bring a laptop and sit in the corner or something."
Your choice. Depends on what you mean by "full gear". I would recommend you bring a computer, and the means to control it. Monitor optional. Besides, we all know how much gaming really occurs on friday nights anyway...

"Also, how will sleeping work? We will all have to go to our homes at night, because JV can't sleep all too many."
Nah. With my table out of the way, my room can easily hold 3 air-matresses, plus the futon pad. In addition, the darkNES and Intrigue residences are a block or two away, so maybe they have some options. If anything, it should be easier since we're not competing LAN space and sleep space in the same room.

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Wednesday September 28 2005 1:03pm
That's too bad about no friday. I won't take that Monday off, (gotta preserve the VACATION TIME daze) so that only leaves Saturday after we set up, and part of Sunday. Probably not worth a trip w/full gear. I might just bring a laptop and sit in the corner or something. Or just skip the LAN and DRINK HEAVILY. Wait...that's what I do anyway. ;)

Also, how will sleeping work? We will all have to go to our homes at night, because JV can't sleep all too many. (w/pizza reach even less! ;)

Alright, back to work.

Sounds like phun! Too bad I ended up working on Beth's titles. Oh well, I'm still up for seeing it thursday night.

About this LAN action...I put my name down for the JVT club r00m for the 8th and 9th. I would really like to try that at least once to see how it works out. I'll be getting the full tour after work to assess the powerz, tablez, chairz, and cooking scenarios further.
Mister Kump is still holding as a possible alternative should a problem arise. There are a few rulez with the room unfortunately...
We wouldn't have access friday night. Therefore, I suggest equipment drop-off at my apartment, then a massive meal at Fresche pizza (I received another $10 off coupon, and Jim simply must try their garlic pizza), then console gamez at Mr. Kruger's if he is up for it. I will bring projection, of course. Then we set up Saturday morning and game for 2 days, including late Sunday night for those who are up for it. I've taken off work monday morning to tear down and hang out with Jim as was discussed earlier.
JVT asks that we be quiet and considerate after midnight for the apartments below us.
There is also a small cleaning fee associated with the room, and with a donation of $4 per person would be asked to take care of that.

So that's the plan as of now. What say ye merry gentlemen?

I think it was more because she couldn't hold the flashlight, and her weapon at the same time, and she is so bright that she knew there was some kind of technique to help facilitate that action. It drove her over the edge.

DAMN YOU DOOM 3!!!

B_W

Posted by: intrigue Posted on: Tuesday September 27 2005 11:13pm
the doom 3 comment is true,

river really did play too much doom 3 with out the lights on, in fact there is a sequence where she cant find the flashlight, and so she goes on a mad demonesque rampage

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Tuesday September 27 2005 11:04pm
Well, I have seen it...I have seen it with my own eyes. Serenity that is. ;)

I swore that this was a trap to kill, or at least seriously mutilate 1337 geeks, so I brought some 'protection' if you know what I mean. It took Kruger at least three calls to get me to come at all. After we arrived a gentleman greeted us warmly, and physically escorted us to our seats. As we were walking, I asked him if this was a trap, and he laughed, saying, "It would be pretty funny if it was." Yeah, pretty funny indeed. After checking the seats for hidden pungi mines or explosives, I sat down and joined my fellow geeks Mr. Placas and Dr. DNA. We had a hearty laugh when I learned that my name was right next to Mr. Placas and near Mr. Kruger. It was a veritable fun fest of spooLAN style geeks. A hearty good time. And no, I did not have to defend myself, but I didn't let the thought get far from my mind.

Now for some mad-spoilage:

1. Mel loses his pants in the first five minutes of the film. (and never gets them back)
2. Abe Vagoda makes a guest appearance as a friend of the "Shepard", and calls himself the "Fisherman".
3. River's dark secret is...that she played Doom 3 without the lights on, and it scared her. (and she was caught smoking in the non-smoking section)

OK so I'm LYING!

But I will say this: The film is well written, it looks good, and I daresay it's the best film I have seen all year.

So, GO SEE IT! (with me, for maximum effect)

Laterz,
B_W

victoria, has a female friend, that as she puts it is a mad gammer addict, and is like an uber level in wow, and loves all sorts of games. Victoria, is going to ask her friend about the lan party. And oh, get this, Victoria plays things off like she wants to be a technosexual of sorts. This afternoon she was going to cut off her hand for a laptop like mine. I told her that i didnt think she was serious, and she looked me straight in the eye, and said, "I AM SO SERIOUS." I havent figured this gal out, but she is a blast to hang out with. She also digs freezepop!

Oh, and I suggest that everyone get some of that Steam HL 2 Silver action before the LAN. You can't beat the value for the gaming $$$. Not only can we play DM and Counterstrike, but you also get HL2 and the entire steam collection, along with Day of Defeat Source. JB can even get a round of team fortress going. Just like the olden daze.

Oh, and also I think this Serenity showing is a TRAP! (say it together...IT'S A TRAP!) Those who go pack some heat, or a maglight or something. At least bring your bad attitude.

BTW where's Placas's BLOG? Because I want to see that. Right now. Is it made from 'Blinkon Blogs' TM?

Disaster averted, for now. After giving me quite a scare this weekend (by not turning on), I'm happy to say I'm posting from Vantus, hard-drives intact. I'll say this for PC Power and Cooling PSUs: at least when they die, they die gracefully and don't cook your components. Still, for the steep price I paid, I was kinda expecting this PSU to outlive all the other components. Oh well, guess I'm an Antec customer now.

Sadly, I fear Vantus's LAN game serving days may be over, as I'm running on the questionable "Deer" PSU that came with the case now. As a precautionary measure I've pulled 2 gigs of memory, the gigabit NIC, USB 2.0, and a fan out to lower the load. And I'm thinking it may stay that way, as I'm hesitant to put more money into a box that's already 3.5 years old. Vantus will probably be relegated to file-serving and rendering only now.

So for this upcoming event I'll need to transfer the game serving duties over to one of Intrigue's 283 computers, most of which are probably more powerful at this point anyways.

Oh, I didn't register for the Serenity screening, 'cause I am not a blogger and, unlike B_W, I am a decent, respectable human being. :P

Besides, I know that this is all a plot by Dan Rather to exact revenge on those who destroyed his carreer. So have fun and bring a gas mask!

Did you guys the email from the PR Department for Serenity concerning the advanced screening? If so, what are you all doing about posting the links and pictures?

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Sunday September 25 2005 5:29pm
Against my better judgement I went and ordered Sacred Gold. The demo actually runs reasonably well on my computer, even with all the options turned on. Not quite sure how it will work as a LAN game though.

Sigh, I can see this thing really interferring with my papers...

Another reason why i'd rather apply an outdated term like "bulletin board", since the technology behind this site is stuck in 1992. And blogs are sooo 2004. :P

No, I think this is a forum. A forum is simply a large space where people meet and discuss issues. There is no partitioning of forums. A bulletin board does have topics and threads. However, this is NOT a blog. A blog's posts are only made by a select few authorized users (i.e. not open to the public), with an option for comments from readers.

Posted by: SysOp Posted on: Friday September 23 2005 4:06pm

WTF is a blog? ;)

...
Milwaukee is swell, especially this new riverwalk expansion and the ASQ catwalks. I can now go from the Ale House all the way to the food court of the Grand Ave with only crossing one street, which makes it very accessible for a lunch break. So I checked out the game store (which seems to be clearing out most of their PC stock). After learning that in the full version you can play as a Vampiress in Sacred (and listening to The Dark Clan), the deal was sealed. I picked up Sacred Gold for a tasty $25, which includes the 2 expansions "Plus" and "Underworld". Here's the same product on Amazon:
www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000A3XRS4/qid=1127502078/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_unbuck_1/002-9478642-5886467?v=glance&s=videogames&n=229534

Again, this is a hack-and-slash action RPG, very easy to learn (this much I know), very difficult to master (this much I'm told). There are save-and-continue co-op multiplayer, as well as PvP. I think this would be something interesting to try out for the LAN, so if you think so too please bring a copy.

Also, the RTS "Lords of Everquest" was 10 bucks so I grabbed that too, because I thought I remember Prime saying at one point that he purchased it. Don't know if it's any good, but the risk was low.

Thanks to Jim's tip, I too have procured tickets for the Serenity screening. However, something doesn't seem right about this. Why isn't there a confirmation email? Why not ask for some type of verification. (As far as I know, I could have put in any URL and it would have assumed that it was my blog. I don't like this....It seems like a trick. The dark side surrounds this website....I sense a plot to trick the bloggers (Why wasn't that in the 1337 trailer?)

I've done some digging on that LAN-friendly dungeon crawler front...the Dungeon Siege games look alright, but I was hoping for some more robust multiplayer and a leaner price. Here's what I found:
www.actiontrip.com/gameinfo/sacred.phtml

It's called "Sacred", and sounds very LAN friendly and a good change of pace from all-FPS-all-the-time. Has more in common with Diablo than WoW really, and it is VERY easy to learn. You can get a single-player demo at Filecloud to orient yourself to the interface. You'll notice from the review that the RPG elements are nothing special and the game was released buggy, but there's been a slew of patches since then so we should be OK. It's the 3 different multiplayer modes that interest me (including co-op campaign). It can also be found for a gentle $20, and runs well on just about anything.

Just tryin' to keep it "fresh".

I signed up for that Crow. But I can hear you now...B_W you're not a blogger! Well, that's mostly true. I do have a livejournal all ready to go, and have been waiting for the right moment to get it fully rolling. Once I do that will take alot of the pressure off me posting here every 15 min...so that should make things a little better around here. ;)

Later G's,

October 8th works! It's the start of my vacation week :)

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Thursday September 22 2005 10:02am
Indeed. Though I could see myself seeing it both weekends, and we need to coincide with Jim's vacation.

I've been snooping around, and I see there's a Serious Sam 2 demo now, and Day of Defeat: Source is due next week. Also, I think it would be cool to do some WoW-style cooperative dungeon crawling. One title that supposedly supports this is Dungeon Siege 2. If anyone knows of something similar (but cheaper and perhaps with a multiplayer demo?), please share here!

I had extreme in my hands but didn't pick it up. Maybe this weekend.

Right now Oct 8 looks okay for me. What about parking?

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Wednesday September 21 2005 5:48pm
I saw a woman reading Lucky Jim on the El today.

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Wednesday September 21 2005 1:29pm
I picked up the extreme, and say that it must be. You still are like some sort of superhuman demi-god, rushing into the combat only to come out killing hundreds. That's a good time.

Hey, check out this news story: (the one about the motorcyclist and the farmer)
www.jsonline.com/news/daywatch.asp

Here's an exerpt:
"Justin Krueger, 22, of Wayne, was driving the tractor eastbound on Highway 28 and had signaled to turn left onto Mullen Lane when he saw the motorcycle attempting to pass the tractor. Though Krueger already had started to turn the tractor, he steered it back into the eastbound lane to avoid the motorcycle, Schmidt said."

That's teh spirit! So now then, back to the location game. I'll check the JVT club room (since that is not a holiday I may have a chance of holding it for 3 days). Kruger's new place is excellent space-wise, but there is a concern about whether he'll have neighbors (and whether they'll be happy about such an event, pants or no pants). So I'll let him check into that as the time gets closer.

If both of those fall through, we could cram into my tiny apartment (I'm getting my new table and chairs this weekend). If 2 people can play on laptops (say, Kruger and Jim), I'll have enough space for a cozy 8. I checked my circuits and the AC takes up a cool 15-amp by itself, so power-wise I'd guesstimate 8 computers alone or 5-6 computers plus AC. So hopefully it will be cooler by then. Crash-space may need to be distributed, but with both Intrigue and darkNES within 2 blocks, that shouldn't be a problem.

So that's what I got logistics-wise. Gaming-wise, I've been itching for some ASS-convoy UT2004 and Tribes Vengeance, but I also recommend Delta Force Xtreme since it is easy on the wallet ($20) and offers different gameplay. I'll make new disks with the DFX demo on them (since Pariah sucked so much ass). Maybe we can check into some of the Source Engine stuff too? Or find a free RTS demo to download?

Greetings,
Alright, I posted that no_pants_dan thing. The reason I am saying something about it, is because I just realized that I do know someone named 'dan' from nebraska. (now that I think about it, pants were optional more than some would have cared to see.) I should have stuck with Oklahoma like I originaly thought, but I have a secret love for nebraska. Anyway, Intrigue would have thought someone else was posting, and I didn't want to go there.

OK.

Now then: Intrigue what does this mean?
"i have DSL, godly like music in the background"

I like music too, but I don't think it's Godly. Not even in the slightest. ;)

Now, what in the world of games is... 'worth my time'.

I'm still all up for the Oct 8. I would love something on Oct. 8. Even better if you guys can make it a Sat-Sun-Mon affair, but otherwise I'd take a simple weekend LAN.

Oh, intrigue, get rid of google and get blogads. Google = Evil. Yes, it's true. Google is officially evil, but not in a corporate, money grubbing sense, but in the antisemitic, hatemongering sense. Just check out who they consider to be legitimate news sites (and yes, Google does discriminate on who they let in and who they reject).

ok, so this tops cyberpunk, metrosexuality, and technosexuality,

The official definition for technosexual is "a dandyish narcissist in love with not only himself, but also his urban lifestyle and gadgets; a straight man who is in touch with his feminine side but has fondness for electronics such as cell phones, PDAs, computers, software, and the web." Many of the geeks I know and adore are far from dandyish and hardly narcissistic.

check out the wikipedia article
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberprep

there is now a term Cyberprep, that encapsilates a Cyber or technology hungry individual, that incoporates technology on an "upload" basis rather than a punk "download" basis. The Cyberprep is described as living in a happy self-indulgent life style.

Now then, on another subject, why should I ever give to a charitable organization? After all, we live in a socialist state after all, where the government bails everyone out. My charitable donations are given as 40% of my earnings every year to the government, not to count the sales taxes and fees. I have already given so much. So very very much.

this is an interesting situation in new orleans, on one side, i believe help is needed, and on the other side, a 200 billion dollar rebuilding contract seems like a moronic idea

why not make an open site for people to donate to the rebuilding effort instead of requiring all of us very safe northreners to pay for hurrecanes all of the time.

Dave: do you know how many freaking Google hits I get with "space water"? Surprisingly, I can't find anything on the Internet that breaks down the ratio of what falls to Earth every day, let alone the specific tonnage of water. You'll just have to watch the Discovery channel and hope they replay whatever the show it was I saw.

using cds as a cryptographic processor(uses the hyperspace of the cd spiral as a geometric processor)
encrypted voip from PGP
randomization of dlls starting addresses in loaded memory to minimize network risk to malicious exes

etc.. they keep getting better, there are some missing seminars from the group, i wonder why ;)

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Friday September 9 2005 11:06pm
BW, I honestly don't know how to explain it any better. There's stuff flying around space, much of it is water, and some of this stuff falls to Earth every day. I don't know how to simplify it beyond that.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Friday September 9 2005 10:17pm
I prefer the less obvious, but more effective counter spin: so what? You can't point to New Orleans, or anywhere in Louisiana for that matter, and say FEMA failed. Why? Because the state governor was sitting on her thumbs and wouldn't transfer authority to the Federal government in time. We have a federal system, which means that the national government can't just steam-roll over the states. Washington needs permission first, and they didn't get it. So, in fact, I'm not convinced FEMA failed, simply because all I've been hearing about is how bad New Orleans was. Tell me how the Feds did in other states and tell me how that compares to previous federal responses in those same states, then I'll make up my mind as to FEMA. Until then, I'm skeptical.

Posted by: intrigue Posted on: Friday September 9 2005 4:28pm
that is an amazing article JB, it really puts things into perspective,

maybe we will build an american atlantis, just for the french quarter

if only we had forcefield technology, this would all be easier

Posted by: intrigue Posted on: Friday September 9 2005 3:56pm
dave, why are you so angry at new orleans, we arnt the marquette golden eagles because we lost the NCAA in new orleans

This is a terrible disaster, so much worse than before, I have heard on a number of accounts that they are going to clear everyone out of the city, before and serious rebuilding occurs. In 633, I just heard from chris that a company from new orleans is setting up shop in the fussion center and building a data center there until they can figure out plan b.

the reluctance of the french, and germans with regard to the UN and going to iraq, is a dead issue. france and germany are more concerned about the creation of the EU constitution, than iraq now, and we are dealing with it with a chip on our shoulder. Iraq will be taken care of in the next few years, and oil will never be what it was, but Iraq will be able to sell it to the chinese for more than 70$ a barrel at close to 1.5 million barrels per day(current production estimate), that comes to 30-40 billion a year flowing into Iraq each year. Sometime i think the reluctance of the US government to fund the creation of hydrogen, is because they want the high price of oil to exist, it serves many 1st world countries to have high oil prices, and continues to drive a larger divide between 1st and 3rd world countries.

Nick was telling me that Oshgosh Trucks, were already switching to electric truck technology for thier future line of garbage trucks. I guess Nick heard wind of an Allen Bradley order that had been placed. I think the spike in oil prices and the current bullish stock market that we are in, doesnt care that oil is going up, i get the sense that katrina, kicked us in the ass, and that we are now going to develop a better energy economy in the US. FedEx, and Ups have started to isssue gas taxes on shipping until there is a new solution avalible.

I predict that non oil engergy stock will be the largest gainers next year. I would also hope that at the car show we see one concept car that is solar powered. Terry was telling me this past weekend that it should be possible, just not cost effective right now, because of the war on terror. The US is buying up all of the carbon fiber and kevlar that could be used to make light weight vehicals.

I am thankfull that katrina, happend now, instead of 3 - 5 years ago, or some time in the future. The US economy is in great shape, and is rolling ahead full spead now. Things like Katrina, at a time like this are going to get alot of people doing things that they would not have done otherwise. It is unfortunate that they are expecting between 10,000-25,000 dead by the end of this, but it happend, and we are going to deal with it, and we are going to show the world how a great country is able to deal with disaster, instead of terror.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Friday September 9 2005 10:43am
As much fun as it is to blame the French, apparently they didn't build Nawlins under sea level (which if you actually think about it, would have been impossible because there were no levies or canals back then). The problem is that for the last 200 years, the silt underneath has been compressing and sinking the city slowly but surely. And it shows no sign of stopping. So even if they manage to detox the area and fill in the current bowl before they rebuild, in another 50 years they'll be right back under sea level. I imagine it will be difficult to get engineers behind that project. Too bad such decisions will be made by politicians who can't see past the 2-4 year term...

Also, I trust we've all heard about how FEMA's top 5 are all political appointments without the actual qualifications for the job (the 9/11 crew having pretty much all left). The obvious counter-spin being, of course, that no one is qualified to handle this because it hasn't happened. The plot thickens. But just because the news media and the Bush administration didn't see this coming, doesn't mean it's unanticipated...

ascii / ANSI art delivered via modem / BBS in the ol' dayz didn't really support spaces either, though with the latter you could call up a black square thingy. The comm programs also had a fixed number of columns and fixed column width which always lined up. In this modern age of fonts, word wraps, and custom browser width it's more complicated.... :(

What I suspect is happening is the HTML wiper is getting triggered by the use of less-than/greater-than in the art, and making it go away. The more elegant solution is to percent-escape those characters instead of delete them, and put in a notice of "html disabled" when that occurs. It is one of about 17,623 things fixed in the mythical 1.6 patch... ;)

Geraldo, speaking of the convention center in N.O., just said "It's like Willowbrook in there." Gas went up 20 cents here today. Still, even with a real prospect of some falling prices soon, I still find myself thinking I CAN'T GET BEHIND THAT because...

Randy O:
New Orleans to be emptied of what by sunday? People? Corpses? Water? We'll see...

"At 4:35 a.m. Friday, an explosion rocked a chemical storage facility near the Mississippi River east of the French Quarter, said Lt. Michael Francis of the Harbor Police. A series of smaller blasts followed and then acrid, black smoke that could be seen in the dark. The vibrations were felt all the way downtown."
www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,168269,00.html

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Friday September 2 2005 9:12am
Nearscape,

To put it bluntly, New Orleans is F*CKED. But that's nothing new. As I said, they couldn't possibly have built the city in a worse area. Frankly, I blame the French, because they built the gosh darn city where it is in the first place. ;) (ocean on one side, river on the next, and finally...the lake...oh and BTW, the city is under sea level...genius) But seriously, if they consider rebuilding it in the same place they are asking for this to happen again...and again...and again.

"The water table in and around New Orleans is now toxic with oil, battery acid, corpses, our good friend Crypty, etc."
--If you talk to Fridley (Greg Japps), his company builds the pumps that pump out the city on a good day, at the order of many millions of gallons a minute. Something tells me there is some serious turnover there, and the polluted water would be pumped out in short order...once they fix the levey that is. However, I think their water table is the least of their concerns at this point. Right now they need to start investing in city stilts...or something...better than that. ;)

Randy O does have this to say however:
++++
New orleans to be emptied by sunday...

Oil opened today down 2 / a barrel and wholesale gas
is down 20 cents a gallon...

oil flowing...

DAD
++++

So, I am guessing the 4-5-6 dollars a gallon crowd isn't quite going to see it. (Awww....) Last night just about every place round here was $3.25. We'll see what happens 'at the end of the day'. The real question is what kind of gas this plant in Orleans produces...do they produce our Milwaukee 'reformulated gas', or was this bump artificial? Hmmm...

So I've been reading the "doom and gloom" a bit tonight, most of it sensationalist nonsense about a few looters, but one issue strikes me as pertinent and long-term...I'm wondering what the solutions and timelines will ultimately be. Maybe Randy O. can shed some light! ;)

The water table in and around New Orleans is now toxic with oil, battery acid, corpses, our good friend Crypty, etc. It will be that way for a while, possibly years, until some expensive environmental cleanup and infrastructure rebuilding is done. As they pump the shit out of the city, where are they going to put it? When they put people back in the city, what are they going to drink and bathe in? Obviously we'll figure it out, since we saved San Fran in '06 and Chicago before that. It's time to put some of that serious science to work!

Wonder if any of those Louisiana Guardsmen that are currently sitting in Iraq are on the fast track home?

Space debris! Thousands of tons of it! Every year! Water! From space!

Speak English man! This doesn't make any sense to me:

"The Earth is constantly drawing it in, and most of it is water."

Drawing in what? Please clairfy! Site sources if you can! This is very important to me!

Thanks!

Everything has an exclamation point behind it! Thats because I am yelling...to myself!

BWWAHAHAHAA!

flow of oil into the refineries in lousiana...near new
orleans ...they returned to 50%...for now ...they find
no damage... oil market was way up but backed off
toward the close...

of the 1,500,000 without power about 500,000 are back
online...

Of the 1,000,000 out of power in florida are all back
on...

Supplies of food and water are now available to all at
the super dome and convention center with bus
transportation continuing...

Recovery in full swing...

Now listen on TV tonight ...doom and gloom...

Take care,

Considering thousands of tons of water fall to the Earth every year (no, not talking about rain) I wouldn't be too concerned with loss due to hydrogen.

"By proactive, I mean not reactive, of course."

I know. I was kidding. ;) However, I would like to see the bleeding heart news stories here in America, as farmers are trying to harvest what they can from their crops as the river floods their land, and as the military is trying to remove them. That would be pretty sweet. ;) Bring Brokaw out of retirement. :)

Oh, and their has been a movement wanting to build more refineries for YEARS, (NOT JUST MONTHS) but certain political parties have done all they can to block the creation of new capacity. In fact, I believe the Clinton administration put some legislation in effect blocking any new refinery capacity, but I think this will finally change that. It's sad that it takes something like this to open people's eyes reguarding infrastucture. (kinda like the new york blackout)

p.s. Now imagine moving Kruger, only it's a city. They didn't plan for their move either, just like Kruger. It's almost a carbon copy...only, like, times 80 billion. ;) Oh well...

By proactive, I mean not reactive, of course. Creating or controlling a situation by causing something to happen, rather than responding to it after it has already happened. It's what we were 100 years ago, and China is now. Many years ago China looked at it's economy and said "Shit, we're growing steady, but we're going to run out of power!" So they drafted some drastic communist measures to make the problem go away. Sure, lots of people had to move, and lots of historical relics have been submerged. But that's they way things work over there. Here, lately, we're being especially reactive. We've known our refining capacity was stretched thin all summer, and we did squat until Katrina kicked us squarely in the nuts. Now it's "ZOMG $6 GALLON!!!11"

And you forget, China has faith in Capitalism too. That's why they bought most of our debt, and are building malls the size of UWM. ;)

"Maybe the Chinese government will be proactive (like they were with the 3 Gorges Dam) and beat us to the hydrogen economy?"

--Yeah, if 'proactive' means 'displace large numbers of your population against their will', I guess. Why is that so 'proactive' anyway? We built the Hoover Dam back in the day, and that proved to be incredibly difficult/productive. We've shared hydroelectric power with Canada at Niagra for years as well. Yeah, 3 Gorges is big, but it has to be. They've got some serious needs. ;)

Frankly, I have faith in captialism. If gas prices stay this high for awhile, there will be feasable alternatives on the market in short order. Whether it's scarry hydrogen, electric (aka coal), nuclear, or something else. It's one thing to say you don't want petrolium based combustion engines, and it's another to provide a realistic alternative. Because i'm not walking to work. ;)

I like the fact that China has a little spunk. Since the soviet union went bust, things just haven't been the same. ;) This country is based on innovation and the freedom to be able to devote yourself to your dreams, which has done quite a bit in the realm of government, and technology in the last two hundred years. This might finally kick us in the pants to get some new creative stuff done. Finally.

As far as the current supply goes, New Orleans's refinerys should be back up in a week or two. I also think this will be the cause to have more refinerys built in the US. Right now this is a blip on the radar, but hopefully it will cause us to get some stuff done, and improve our infrastructure.

"Well, there won't be an apocalypse when it comes to fuel, at least not for a long, long time. The higher the price of oil goes, the more alternative sources come online, such as coal and sand tar. Supply and demand, supply and demand."

And the current gas hikes have little to do with oil. Rather, our ability to refine it is down due to Katrina. Different news sources over the last few days have reported between 8% and 40% domestic gasoline production loss, so clearly they're still assessing the damage. Standard procedure is to price for the worse case scenario now, and if the damage isn't that bad then prices will come back down over the next few weeks, to a level that actually corresponds to crude prices.

Longer term, the interesting thing this time around is that the U.S. isn't going to be determining demand as much in a few years. It all depends on what countries like China and India decide to use to power their up-and-coming middle classes. If another billion people over there decide they want to start driving to work, well, there ain't a damn thing OPEC can do to meet that demand. And there are reports Russia can't afford the necessary refinery upgrades. Maybe the Chinese government will be proactive (like they were with the 3 Gorges Dam) and beat us to the hydrogen economy?

Well, DBBQC, that is the truth. Life would definitly be differnet if you had to make a choice between your children and your wife. I don't know how I would react to that.

As far as the SUVs, they're a product of the market. When gas comes back down to at least 2.50 in the next couple of weeks, (a month at the most) all these dandypantses who freaked and sold their SUV's right now for fifty cents on the dollar, will be sullied to find their sweet machines offered for sweet prices AND PEOPLE BUYING THEM.
The problem is that we don't have a dire need to switch our energy source right now, so no one is working on it. Heck, no one's really looked at nuclear power, seriously, for like 40 years. Johnney was trying to get some of his concepts looked at, at MIT, but there was no market for it, BECAUSE NO ONE IS LOOKING AT NUCLEAR POWER AS AN ALTERNATIVE FUEL SOURCE right now.
Hydrogen is interesting but I was talking to Johnney about it, and he said that even if small amounts of it escape unburned, (like what happens at the gas pump when the little bit trickles out) that lighter than air hydrogen could escape out of the atmosphere, slowly depleting the world's water supply. Now that's kind of frightening.

But all this aside, could they have built New Orleans any worse than they did? I mean, they were just asking for something like this to happen. I hate to make such a light comparison, but it's kinda like that Simpson's episode when Homer filled the underground with garbage. They picked up and moved the town 20 miles. That might just have to be what they do here, because what's to stop this from happening again...soon?

It's been bugging me that I didn't write that if there were kids involved and my love got swept out of my grasp I do imagine I would fight on for them. But I wouldn't be the same.
